Abdominal pain
Question:
I think I would have a doctor check it out. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -I’m an long distance runner for about 20 years. In this period I’ve met all kinds of injuries, but always the typical running injuries in legs, feet, knees, ankles. However patience always did the trick. But since the last 4 weeks I’ve problems in the abdominal region. It feels like I did 100 situps, or so. At first the pain disappeared after 5 minutes, but gradually it stayed during a longer time, 20, 30, 45, 60 minutes. It hurts at both sides of the abdomen, about 5 cm below the belly button. It’s only the abdomen, not the groin. So I think the adductors are not involved, but who knows? Afterwards the pain is still there, a bit lesser, but it still reminds me of situps, or cramps. Is there anybody who knows this kind of injury? Who can give me an advice? What is the cause and what the remedy? I would be very grateful to hear about it. Greetings, Dick

By the way, would this happen to be injury to the psoas? This is an injury that’s more associated with long distance running. You really should see a sports doctor or look through some running books on injury to the psoas. C – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I’m an long distance runner for about 20 years. Dick, recurring, worsening abdominal pain for a month? I hate to sound like a broken record, but you should NOT! be looking for advice on a newgroup about this. It could be any of a wide range of overuse/imbalance injuries. It could also be almost anything. Get it checked. BobMac

Please, please, please go see a doctor. I’m going to be really alarmist here and tell you a scary story. My brother, a basketball ref, runner, and golfer, visited me. Had a fever, said he had the flu. Complaining a lot about his hernia and lower back pain from lying down so much. Fever didn’t go away, and after a few days I compelled him to go to the hospital (I’m an older sister, and there are certain nagging skills inherent in that position!). They checked him in. After many days of different diagnoses and one point where his fever spiked up to 106 degrees (!), they found the problem — possibly an abscess on the psoas but most likely a ruptured appendix that has gone horribly septic in his body. I will spare you the graphic description of the disgusting stuff being drained … I will say, however, that I will never eat split pea soup again. I’ve asked him — didn’t you have any pain? Nah, just the ordinary workout and/or hernia stuff, nothing excruciating. OK, this is too gross and weird to ever happen to anyone again, but just to be sure, go see your doctor and be safe. See how good I can be at nagging? And thanks for letting me spout off, it’s been a scary week. Kate G.
