Question:

I trained for and successfully completed my first marathon this fall (Portland). I have had a nagging problem in the post marathon recovery period. Whenever I run, after about one mile, I develop a pain in my lower abdominal area. Unfortunately, it also is quite painfull when my wife and I are indulging in my other favorite activity. It feels about the same as the soreness that results from starting a abdominal training program. Trouble is, it has stayed with me for over three months. The pain is not too bad, but, it is certainly uncomfortable. I have ran several 11 mile runs since the marathon. I just wondered if any others have experience a similar phenomina.

Don I tried to post this earlier and it looked like it didn’t get out to you. YES! I had a similar occurence! I saw a doctor and it is no longer a problem. If you are interested, post to me directly and I’ll give you the details, including symptoms, location of the pain, what the doctor advised (which worked successfully) and other boring stuff with long words like ciprofloxacin and diverticulosis. Joe

Don SHORT VERSION: YES! I had the same thing! See a doctor! For long version read on! I am in training for Bermuda Marathon next Sunday. Last Saturday, I ran a half marathon as a training run. Following that 13 miler, I had a mild pain (better described as a discomfort) right in the middle of my body, about equal distant between navel and penis, just about where most of us where our belt buckle. I figured, it will go away after a good bowel movement. It didn’t. Sunday was the same. Monday was much worse. By Monday, every time I tried to walk, the first 10-12 steps were painful, not just uncomfortable, but painful. Monday night, I had a slightly elevated temperature (99.2 degrees) and went to bed early. Tuesday noon I went to a stomach doctor. He ran many tests. He says "it is either bladder infection or diverticulosis". He told me, no solid foods, no running, liquids only for three days and gave me an anti-biotic (Ciprofloxacin HC). By Friday, I was fine and doc says I can renew my training on Monday. He was uncertain what it was that I had, but will run more expensive (berium or barium) tests if it returns. I hope that a week off before taper week doesn’t affect my finishing at Bermuda. It is my sixth marathon (I did one in 91, 93, 95 and 96 and two in 94) and my only goal is to finish. My longest training run was December 28, 20 miles. Do you think I’ll make it? Feel better. Keep running. Joe
