Have sharp lower abdominal pain (shooting into the testicles) immediately when I begin running. The pain lessens after a few minutes but can still be felt 2 to3 days after a run. Due to an Achilles injury, I took 9 weeks off after completing a May marathon. This pain began last Spring and continues even after a 9 week layoff. I’ve been to an MD recently to be checked for a hernia – negative. Note, pain is not felt when riding a bike or walking – just when lifting my legs to run. Anyone with a similar experience? Regards. Running John, Be sure to let us know what you find out if you find anything. Adds to our cache of running folklore. Another thought is that the pain has something to do with the psoas. The psoas attaches to the front of the lumbar spine goes down and attaches to the lesser trochanter and along the way is joined by the iliacus that starts along the illiac crest of the pelvis. It’s the muscle that allows you to kick your leg up. You probably know it better from its French name: filet mignon. If you slouch while sitting you can shorten it. If you’re not exercising for 9 weeks, and slouching and/or have poor posture, that psoas muscle shortens and causes a whole syndrome of postural problems. The psoas is hard to get to since it lies behind all the abdominal viscera. So the lower abdominal pain might be at the musculo-tendon junction which attaches to the lesser trochanter. Go to MD (sports oriented); chk for all regular stuff (hernia was just first stop) – if continues, get MRI (lower lumber, pelvis) to rule out skeletal issues and start thinking Osteitis Pubis/Athletic Pubalgia or hip girdle prob (like labral tear).
All stupid and unecassary. Go to a chiropractor.

Some great suggestions – thank you. I found a good article on Osteitis Pubis (http://www.emedicine.com/sports/topic90.htm) that seems to describe very well what I have experienced for several months. The pain began in March/April but would go away after a few minutes of running. It has become progressively worse over time to where I experience pain through an entire run. I’ve been running for 27 years and have never been much for stretching. It may be catching up to me. I’m headed back to the doctor – will share my diagnosis so I can get my medicine "here" as well….. Regards.
