– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – says… A box of prunes should do the trick. Or some sauerkraut juice. Jan I love sauerkraut!!  The juice is difficult to find though. Wonder if the sodium content is sky high. Not sure if any studies have been done but I would give the edge to the prunes for laxative ability. Any diarrhea experts out there wanting to comment? frank

A little trick I learned years ago when I was a practicing herbalist: collect the peels from all the citrus fruits you eat, and allow them to dry. When they are dry, powder them. Save this powder in a jar with a tight-fitting lid. Used as a laxative in sufficient quantities with plenty of water, there are few cases of constipation that will not be alleviated by it. It is more effective than all the psyllium husk products on the market, plus it is a lot gentler on the body. Of course, this was from the days when I used to eat cooked foods. Now that I don’t, constipation never happens. But someone else may find it of value. I have seen bottled sauerkraut juice in one local health food store. It was imported from Germany I think but wasn’t very expensive. I make fresh, raw cultured sauerkraut from time to time that beats store bought sauerkraut hands down, for taste as well as for health-giving properties. I have taken some left-over juice from this sauerkraut, and "seeded" it into a batch of fresh, raw cabbage juice. It cultures nicely, and doesn’t require the addition of salt – making it far healthier than the store bought version. If you don’t want to make your own, some health food stores carry fermented raw sauerkraut from a company called Rejuvenative Foods. It’s pretty good stuff, plus they make a fermented raw kim chi that not only has the health benefits of sauerkraut, but has a good spicy kick to it, too. Of course, all of these things are just "cures" not real fixes, because they don’t change the lifestyle behaviors that lead to constipation to begin with. It is far better to simply live and eat healthfully to begin with, so it doesn’t become an issue at all. Habib

Seriously, routine colon cleansings are NOT recommended- can do more harm than good. If you are "regular" why even consider it? If you’re irregular there are some good laxatives to take (short term ONLY) to get ya going again. frank

NOT recommended by WHOM. I’ve heard this line countless times, as well as the warnings about colon cleansing doing more harm than good. But what I do know, is that over the past eleven years, I’ve known many, many people who have had colonics performed, and people who have used intestinal cleansing products. Some people use both colonics and intestinal cleansing products. And in all of this time, I have never, ever met a single person who has said that colon cleansing harmed them in any way. In fact, I would say that most of those people, nearly all of them in fact, have said that it helped them. Have you heard the stories about people getting out layers of "mucoid plaque" from the colon? Well, once in a while a friend who has done a colon cleanse tells me how they got those materials out, and how they look just like the illustrations in Bernard Jensen’s book. And in every case in which a person has told me they got those materials out, that person not only said that they felt much healthier, but the person looks much healthier. Their color is better, they have a more vital look to them, and often they say that their digestion, their ability to focus mentally, and the quality of their sleep are dramatically improved. And if you saw them before and after, you would realize they were telling the truth. I recently saw a friend that I haven’t seen in several months, and he said he had done a colon cleanse. He also looked amazingly better than the last time I had seen him. He glowed by comparison. I give no credence whatsoever to the medical "party line" on colon cleansing. It is designed only to protect medical incomes, nothing else. Habib

Actually prunes are not only a good source of fiber, but also an irritant like senna or cascara, but milder.  My vote would be for prunes.

which is precisly the procedure done when one prepares for a colonoscopy.  One might need a prescription.  They have a variety of flavors as well. rich – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I would appreciate any good recipies for a total colon cleans. Thanks in = advance, Get enough Colyte, Golytely, or Nulyte, to make up four litres with added water. Eat nothing, drink only water for 24 hours. Prepare the colon cleansing solution with warm water. Drink the 8 litres, while near a toilet. Soon fluid will start to come out of your anus. By the time you have finished the four litres the fluid should be coming out as clear as tap water, not a trace of brown. If it isn’t, repeat the procedure. If it still isn’t you have a serious problem and should see a gastroenterologist, otherwise your colon is now completely pink clean. — School of Artificial Intelligence,     Division of Informatics   Edinburgh University,   5 Forrest Hill, Edinburgh, EH1 2QL, UK [http://www.dai.ed.ac.uk/daidb/people/homes/cam/ ]    DoD #205

There are many acute and subacute conditions that contraindicate these types of cleansings.  Any known or subclinical perforation(s) of the colon and GI tract can be extremely dangerous. So is any undiagnosed abdominal pain, hernias, fissures/fistulas, colitis, Crohn’s disease, & diverticulitis to name a few. Thus it would be unwise, IMO, for any technician or self administration of colonics with undiagnosed GI problems. I also maintain that a regular and healthy colon/GI tract is not in need of any type of colon cleansing routine. Habib: I give no credence whatsoever to the medical "party line" on colon cleansing. How does this protect medical incomes by docs telling their pt’s how to maintain regular and normal bowels??  There are not any profitable "pills" out there that are pushed to my knowledge in this area. frank

Rick: Please be careful in your use of anything to "clean" your colon.   In general, the colon cleans itself quite well with no help at all.   Michele
