constipation
Question:
Novartis is developing a drug to treat constipation predominate IBS. www.centerwatch.com lists clinical trials in the US. That is one way to get ahold of new drugs prior to their release. Hopefully the drug will finish the approval process sometime in the next few months, and be on the market a month or two after that. The Novartis web site should have up to date info on the progress of this drug. One thing to monitor is the amount of water you drink. One function of the colon is to remove water from the stool to help prevent dehydration. Most people do not drink enough water to keep properly hydrated. You might want to make sure you drink 64 oz of water per day, with additional water if you do anything to work up a sweat. I was diagnosed with probable ibs a few months ago after being rushed to hospital with what they thought were gall stones- my complaints were also heavy abdominal pain and chest pains actually due to enormous constipation. They didn’t find any stones or anything else and so I was sent to a very costly and time consuming tropical sickness centre (just got back from India) and they didn’t find anything of course-my doctor thought it was ibs..what helps me is the following: Plenty of water (someone already said that). In the morning plenty of fibre- meusli ,grain,nuts,fruit- excersise. If you smoke-stop. I make it sound easy, but its worth it-it really loosens you up after a few days stopping smoking. I hope this helps, Pete

Everyone speaks of "The runs", I am completely the opposite. I know when severe pain is coming my way because I get so locked up I have to take massive laxatives to move my bowels sometimes for weeks until the morning comes when The STABBING PAIN is gone and then my bowels are back to normal leaving me with a dull constant pain for a couple more weeks and then nothing. The pain gets so severe I have had my husband call an ambulance for me once because I could not walk due to the severity of the pain. They now know me very well in the emergency room as the lady who just comes in for pain killers. It dosn’t do much for your reputation with the hospital staff but I don’t know how to cope with such pain. No relaxation, medition, or anything else even pain pills help. This is a nightmare, I wouldn’t wish IBS on anyone. I do wish there was a way to controll it. It’s not easy holding down a job when you have to work.

Imodium has been a godsend for cramps and diarrhea, but lately I have been having some bad bouts with constipation. Can anyone tell be the Imodium equivalent for constipation? — Posted via Talkway – http://www.talkway.com Exchange ideas on practically anything ™.

Try something like FiberCon or Metamucil (I use FiberCon because Metamucil bloats me). If you take FiberCon, read all the instructions on the box, the pills swell in liquid and could choke you if you don’t drink it with a full 8oz of water. prophet2000 <im…@usa.net> wrote in message

Best bet is increased fiber and water intake. There are a number of OTC laxatives you could try, but most have diarrhea as a side effect =:-o. K. ********************************************************* Access to power must be confined to those who are not in love with it. -Plato kmot…@aol.com

My IBS is always related with gas and constipation., I recently have found that AloeVera Juice helps the constipation. Aloe Vera is a healer. People put it on burns, wounds, etc. So it helps heal the colon as well. It helps me go to the bathroom. Istarted with 4 ounces mixed with a little juice. I’m up to 6-8 ounces now. Just like anything else-you think you find an answer to this disease, then it comes back. All I know is that I’m so tired of hurting, so tired of Blowing up like I’m 6 months pregnant. SCoxP…@aol.com

Slippery Elm (food) is also soothing and healing although I think it’s rather binding if you drink a lot. Meadowsweet is analgesic, I seem to think aspirin was derived from it. Medicinal Charcoal is good for gas. Regards Kate Remove ‘Hello’ for no-spam

I also jave very bad bouts of constipation and sever bloating, I have found a fantastic receipe for a soup that moves the bowels and takes the bloating down, the only side affect I have found is that you will have diarrhoea whilst taking the soup, but if you can put up with it for a few days then it may help with moving your bowels and pain. The receipe is as follows : 1 bunch spring onions chopped 1 bunch celery chopped 2 green capsicums (peppers) chopped 800g carrotts chopped 2 tins crushed tomatoes 1 tin of beef broth with barley 2 tins of sliced green beans drained 2 beef stock cubes 1pkt french onion soup chop all vegies small and boil for 10 mins in about 2 litres of water, reduce heat to simmer add beans, tomatoes, and beef broth, sprinkle in stock cubes and french onion soup. Mix well and simmer for a further 20 mins. Then ready to eat. If you only eat the soup and fruit for a full day you will start to feel a heap better. I know this works well as I was constipated for eleven days and tried everything to go , nothing would move my bowels except this soup. After 3 bowls I was feeling much better, and the other good thing it also reduces fluid build up. I hope this works for you, good luck. maxine
