Diverticulosis
Question:
I rushed myself to the ER or ED as they want to call it last night because of server abdominal pain. After 6 hours, an exam, a CT and waiting like you wouldn’t believe, I have Diverticulosis.
<snip Hey Desi, I’m in the middle of what you’ve just been through. First they thought it was a ruptured ovarian cyst. I’ve had the CT (allergic reaction to the dye that burned my face – it peeled twice!) and everything looks normal. Was your doc able to actually see the diverticuli from the CT scan? My symptoms seem to be the same as yours yet the scan looked negative. I’d love to compare notes about this. Thanks, Alicia
Response:
I don’t know if they "say" it. I’m going to my primary Dr. next week for a follow up. I’ll ask her (if she has the X-rays) what the CT shows. I thought it was either a cyst gone ballistic or an etopic pregnancy or a pile of crape that didn’t want to leave me. Desi

Bummer Desi. I hope you’re feeling better today. How do they treat it? Can you still low carb if you have it? I remember an aunt of mine having it. I never knew much about it except that she couldn’t eat stuff with seeds on it because they caused a bout of it. Other than that she seemed to eat what she wanted. The only ones that are low carb are the broccoli, spinach and fresh fruit (well the ones I’d eat). I guess 2 cups of mixed salad greens and psyllim (sp) every day just aren’t enough. I’m just going to add a more salad and other veggies to my diet. I’m wondering how long something like this takes to develop? Desi

I’ve suspected that my husband has had minor bouts of diverticulosis. Could you describe what you experienced and what test they ran? — Rudy – Remove the Z from my address to respond. Check out the a.s.d.l-c FAQ at: http://www.grossweb.com/asdlc/faq.htm
Response:
Thank you for the explanation. My pain was in my left lower abdominal region.
My husband keeps having problems in the upper right region, and has been checked multiple times and tested for gallbladder problems but nothing ever turns up. The reason I thought it was diverticulosis was that the pain is related to BM and flares up when he has popcorn. It doesn’t flare up after eating — so it seems like gallbladder problems aren’t their. — Rudy – Remove the Z from my address to respond. Response:
Rudy it could also be upper left. Mine was just lower left. I’d get it a cooperative doc to check it out again and suggest it may be diverticulosis that your concerned about. Have they ever tried to look at the colon? I know popcorn, nuts and seeds are no no’s and can cause flare ups. Frankly I wouldn’t have thought too much about it if it wasn’t for the sever pain. You know chalked to off to being constipated, eating too much or something not agreeing with leaving the body. Desi

They’ve done upper and lower GI tube work on him, plus CAT scans, MRIs and ultra sounds — but most of the time they were looking for a gallbladder problem. The only other thing that it might me is an ab muscle related problem — those are harder to detect. This week he’s going seedless and gradually upping fiber to see if it helps. Thanks for your input. — Rudy – Remove the Z from my address to respond. Check out the a.s.d.l-c FAQ at: http://www.grossweb.com/asdlc/faq.htm

10-20 years! I’m only 35. Surly I ate ok from birth till 15-25 years old. Yeah I just have to make sure I get my fiber in. It’s supposed to be the answer for about 90% of those afflicted. It’s painful till the infection and inflation goes away. Yeah can’t eat nuts and seeds and popcorn. Don’t eat much of those things anyway so not like I’m going to miss them. Yeah I can still low carb just need to make sure I get more fiber then I’ve been getting. You know, when this started the only different food I had was a BK double cheese burger without bun then around 1 am while I was sleeping WHAM! It made me think I had food poisoning or something. The doc said I was a bit young to have it but so far I’ve been young with all my ailments so I’m just waiting for the next thing to crop up. Seriously I’m going to get an in-depth physical and see what else could be going on with me and just try and take better care of myself as best I can. Desi

My pain was in my left lower abdominal region. Kind of felt like a fist trying to fit through a straw. The first time I had it was about 8 weeks ago and I couldn’t get out of bed, double over in pain. This time was better but still the pain. You can also have diarrhea or constipation, fever, chills nausea and vomiting. For the CT I had to drink orangeade which is a contrast media then I had to get an IV because of the x-ray dye they use. Then I was put through the CT for the x-ray. Hold your breath, stay still. The doc did a tactile exam of my belly and I thought I would die when he pressed my left side. The cause is low fiber diet, which for me isn’t far fetched because I don’t like a lot of veggies and I tend to eat low carb fruit only in the summer. So I have to increase my fiber. It’s just one more thing I’m going to have to deal with and watch out for.
