Question:

Hi all, I’m new here.  I have been ‘tentatively’ diagnosed with endo but recently have started having symptoms more along the lines of ibs.  I can’t even have a drink of water in the morning without having abdominal pain then diarrhea sometimes the pain is so intense I will vomit as well.  This used to only be around my period but in the last few months it has become everyday.  I don’t have severe menstrual pain every month but sometimes it is so bad I feel like passing out.  This bowel thing feels the same though (the pain).  Almost always I will get the ‘after the pain’ pain in my hip, groin, or leg on the right side.  I am really struggling with this endo or ibs? question.  My "new" gyn put me on BC until I figure out if I want lap or not.  But I’m feeling sort of like a hypochondriac, what if I have the lap and it’s IBS.  Is there any way to know for sure before I go through surgery or have a lower GI done?  Please help

Response:

Actually for many of us endo and IBS goes hand in hand.  I have met many women who have both.  Unfortunately, diagnosing IBS is a long process. It does not appear on any GI tests.  It’s basically a spastic intestine or even stomach (sometimes referred to as a "nervous stomach" by old people).  Usually you have to go through ruling everything else out (ex-Chron’s, ulcers, etc).  Diet is the best way to really deal with it. Other things could cause the sickness and pain as well. Like bowel adhesions or obstructions.  Have a lap done.  It’s better to be safe than sorry.   Tara http://community.webtv.net/tara_arat/TarasEndometriosis
