Fog head
Question:
Please let us know how it goes with the doctor. {{{Carol}}} — revek {insert witty saying here}
– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – My dizziness is persisting on day fourteen of Induction. I also have abdominal pain on the left just below my waist and am booked with the doctor this morning. It is quite obvious this is not related to the diet. I’ve been on Atkins Induction for two weeks strictly to cut my craving for sweets. My weight went down three pounds and up two (had something very salty yesterday) but that’s not important. I lost an inch on my waist that’s been there for three years since I reached goal. I am going to be watchful about my carbohydrates henceforth, under 100 a day and less if possible. It’s been an excellent experience in retraining appetite for less sweets. This morning I had cheese blintzes which i used to add honey to but find they were fine without. I did have unsweetened thawed frozen strawberries and they supplied enough of a sweet taste. i added the fruit because I hoped it would counter the dizziness but it did not. I just noted that i had 400 calories at breakfst, (blintzes and bacon) and try to start with a good breajfast. i don’t get hungry again until about 1:00 p.m. Hoping nothing serious is wrong! I know it says you might feel foggy in the head, but how long is this supposed to last? I have tons of energy, but feel just plain foggy. This is day 12 of induction, and tired of feeling bleary eyed and foggy. Like the energy though! This did not happen the first time I did Atkins 3 years ago. This happens to me when I don’t take my supps. I keep thinking I’ve got a low grade cold or something until I remember I forgot to take my magnesium/calcium/zinc. If I take it regular I don’t get that "I need a pot of coffee to wake up all the way" feeling. — revek {insert witty saying here}
Response:
Hmm. Potassium seems a tad low. There’s an (unofficial) RDA floating around on the net for potassium anywhere from 2 to 3.5 grams (depending on where you look). Since you started lowcarbing you’ve cut your potassium from food sources roughly in half (if I remember my research correctly). Your body may be protesting such an extreme drop. Couldn’t hurt to try increasing it a little for a day or two to see how you do. Unfortunately, just because you’ve done this before doesn’t mean you’ll get the same exact response from your body as you did last time. Bodies are funny that way. Luck. — revek {insert witty saying here}
– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I am averaging about 2000 – 2500 calories a day. I weigh 213 right now, started at 230. My supplements have: 80 mg potassium, 100 mg 0f magnesium, 165 mg of calcium, & 15 mg of zinc Normally I take a lot more calcium but I ran out and am going to Costco this weekend so thought I would buy some then. I feel a little less foggy this morning, but it’s still there. I kept my calories about the same yesterday and increased my carb count closer to the 20 grams net. — Joanne M – for Miserly since I won’t spend money on lots of junk food! O – for Old, which I am in my childrens eyes! M – Meanie since I won’t stop at Dairy Queen every time we pass by! MOM was heard to mutter during an E F Hutton commercial: I am drinking 128 oz of water each day, plus herbal tea several cups, and 1 cup of coffee today (down one cup from yesterday). My carb count today is 25 which I can subtract the 7 grams of fiber from to make it 18 grams net. Fitday says I have an average carb rate of 20 and fiber of 5 so I’m getting only about 15 carbs each day. I have taken 1 tbsp of flax seed meal each day for the last three days hoping to take care of other challenges, still not working though. Don’t feel bloated really, just constipated. I also have made sure that I ate 3 cups veggies (mostly lettuce, celery, alittle bit (maybe a tbsp each and not every day) of avocado, onions, cucumber, tomatoes, and zucchini one night). I stay away from cheeses for the most part, a little cream cheese (about 2 tbsp) and about 1/2 cup of cheddar on a salad (only once a day). I’m not starving nor am I feeling overly full so I think I’m eating ok. Sample eating plan… Breakfast 2 – 3 poached eggs, tbsp mayo tsp mustard, 1 cup coffee with cream and splenda, 1 cup without cream or splenda Lunch 3 oz hamburger patty (sometimes I have tuna with celery and a little of the guacamole) 2 tbsp mayo Snack 1/4 cup Atkins guacamole (from Atkins recipe book) Celery stick medium The other snack I have is a cream cheese dip with olives in it and a stick of celery or pork rinds sometimes both Dinner Rabbit back meat (all white meat) This week I"ve had salmon, chicken, beef and rabbit 2 cups lettuce (had zucchini one night) 1/2 cup cheese (I limit my cheese because it causes me to over eat) homemade blue cheese dressing Additional: 1 multivitamin with minerals (Costco brand), fish oil capsule, primrose oil, Echinacea capsule, vitamin e, vitamin c, ginseng, vitamin b complex, Tbsp flax seed meal in water or mixed into salad or dip I only use Splenda, unless it’s already added to the product I am eating I never use equal or nutrasweet. Been using Splenda for a long time now… I don’t know how much that is calorie wise, but it looks kinda low to me. Are you sure you’re eating enough? 10 x body weight is a good rough guide. How much potassium are you getting daily? Most people get their potassium thru foods that lowcarbers cut way back on, so you might consider increasing it, either thru a supplement or thru your table/cooking salt (Morton’s Lite is half potassium). Magnesium/calcium/zinc is generally thought to help with TOM cravings and is a good idea for women in general. Both of these supplements have helped me get thru the foggies. — revek {insert witty saying here}

Interesting. I’ve been taking supplements since day one and I *never* had any of the foggy feelings or nausea. Perhaps that’s why. — mills

I think so, anyway. I know I didn’t have the classic "flu" symptoms during induction like my husband did, because he flat refused to take the supps until I twisted his arm. Then he got better, and now he’s evangelizing on lowcarb and supplements at work (they’re all fascinated by the way, until he admits they’ll have to give up their daily biscuts and gravy, a precious tradition in these parts). Now that I’m in OWL, I have a harder time remembering my routine, but that has more to do with the fact that I had a bunch of teens invade the house for the winter right after induction than with the woe. — revek {insert witty saying here}

Are you consuming aspartame?

I had this problem as well (I also was irritable) – try taking some b-complex vitamins. They do wonders for me!
