Functional Abdominal Pain
Question:
Hello All, Well, I had an upper endoscopy and a colonoscopy both with tissue biopsies. Everything came back OK. So the GI guy says my pain is either my gallbladder or is "functional" pain. I guess my gallbladder could cause pain 2-3 inches below my xyphoid process. The HIDA scan shows my gallbladder is not functioning. Mike
Response:
Mike, What this means is that you don’t have IBS. You have an illness of the gallbladder ( I am sure that there is some medical name for such a condition). Your Physician must now determine the cause of the problem and do what ever is needed to repair it. IBS has no Physical cause. IBS is what the Dr. referred to as "functional pain". Response:
Sigman, The good news is that you don’t have to suffer with the pain, There are ways to eliminate the pain so that you are functional again. Bob "signman" <sign…@ptd.net> wrote in message

Bob, I’m not at all new to this group and have read your posts about hypnotherapy for IBS already. NOT at all interested since hypnosis hasn’t helped me in the past.
Response:
Signman (no nasty names it is unbecoming of you), Could it be that the therapy that the hypnotist used was not right? You keep looking to medications even though the last ones didn’t work. Hypnosis doesn’t cure anything, it is the therapy that is used that makes the difference. Most hypnotists work on the symptom, the pain, not the cause. They haven’t been trained in how to do that kind of work. Kind of like going to a dentist to solve a heart problem, both are Dr.s. Bob Brenner "signman" <sign…@ptd.net> wrote in message

Response:
Hi Dave, Yes I have heard of those and they aren’t IBS they are an ulcer or diverticulitis! IBS is when there isn’t any physical cause. That doesn’t mean the pain isn’t real. If it has a cause it has a different name like the ones you just mentioned. Bob Brenner "Dave J" <neut…@alltel.net> wrote in message

Dave, I have to agree with Bob – while there isn’t any actualy physical cause for the pain, it is very real to everyone. My mother actually has Ulcerative Colitis / Crone’s Disease with a colostomy, so I can tell you first hand the difference between the two. It’s funny too, because IBS is generally considered to have a "range" of effects….it’s not one set of specific symptoms with one set of potential medical cures. I’ve met people in an IBS clinic that ranged from all walks of life with all different types of pain / symptoms, and yet no one doctor could adequately prescribe any treatment for their symptoms. Generally speaking, IBS is considered more of a "catch all" diagnosis. I noticed that in another post someone said they had "Type D" IBS – believe it or not, I’ve heard of this from a doctor a long time ago. They did actually type the disease into different classifications (based on pain level / symptoms). According to the doctor that I saw, I was at the highest level (whatever that is) for quite awhile (at least 6 years at the time). It kinda showed too – when an anti-spasmatic drug was prescribed for me, I was supposed to take 1 tablet a day……when 3 didn’t even touch the pain, you know that it’s time to look at something else. Luckily enough, I’ve been able to find a number of things that have helped ease the symptoms. Just throwing my $.02 in…. Aaron

on pain level / symptoms). To the best of my knowledge, "Type D" IBS refers to someone who primarily has diarrhea as the symptom. "Type C" refers to someone having constipation as the primary symptom Doesn’t refer to pain levels. signman

Signman – I’ll take your word on this one (since I’m out of touch with the popular lingo on this). I am thusly corrected….:-) Aaron
