Glucophage and the Dye question
Question:
I just had a CAT scan. The radiologis mentioned nothing about Glucophage so as I was sitting on the table I asked him if any medications I take would be contraindicated with this test. He said "no, not unless you are a diabetic". I told him I was and he asked if I was on Glucophage. He said they had rec’d alot of material lately on glucophage. The latest info he had said that persons on glucophage should quit taking it for 3 or 4 days after the injection of the dye. As a precaution they said that if they know you are diabetic they also tell you to stop the day before. He did stress that the critical time was in the few days after the test. I wonder what would happen if I hadn’t mentioned it. (I had been off for a week) due in part the abdominal pain I had been experiencing. My physician feels it may be due (at least in part) to the Glucophage. He has switched me over to Rezulin now. — To reply personally to this message, remove the "z" from the address

Unfortunately, we have to be aware of what questions to ask. Of course, there should be a prescreening questionnaire to find problems like these. I tend to ask many questions even when my doctor tells me to do something because I want to make sure the right decision has been made. I recently had dye as well (for an IVP). They did _not_ tell me I needed to stop my glucophage until I was already on the table and they were tapping my arm for a vein (I had to reschedule the test). I only noticed one strange thing after the test. It seemed for the next day or so, my fingers just would not stop bleeding after I got a drop of blood to test my sugar. I had never had that problem before and I wonder whether the die caused it (I remember the doctor telling me the die is very thick; I don’t know if that had anything to do with it). –AA
