Question:

I have a mild case of UC.Since it was diagnosed in September 2001 I have been taking Asacol. Also apart from 3or 4 months last year I have been taking Prednisolone at varying doses.Luckily apart from some weight gain I have had no noticeable side effects.I had to stop taking Azathriopine due to blood /liver irregularities and 6MP due to bad side effects(after one week)and some blood irregularities. Two weeks ago I stopped the Pred after a long period of tapering down and yesterday the problem began to flare up again. My question is,has anyone here been on pred for an extended period with no side effects. My doctors are keen to get me off it bit it seems to be the only effective remedy for me.As I have no abdominal pain I’m not that keen on surgery. Also has anyone tried nicotine with success.I quit 18 years ago and the temptation to restart is growing! Chris

Response:

I had problems tapering off of prednisone a few years ago and my GI prescribed a methylprednisolone enema which helped a LOT. I don’t know if these are commonly used, or if it’s something my doctor made up, but I have to mix the methylpred with 60 cc of warm tap water and use it at bedtime. My UC is mostly down low in the region where an enema can reach, so that’s a big reason why it worked well. I don’t remember how long I had to use them, but it was a relatively short time period before I was off the pred and able to even taper off the enemas. I’d ask your doc about where the majority of your disease is located and if this might help for you.
