Question:

Well, I’ve made an appointment with my PCP (Jan 24th).  I’ve been going to him for almost 10 yrs and he has a long relationship with my family, and I can talk to him fairly easily. I’m bringing with me some articles on PCO, and I will be sure to point out the symptoms and the fact that I have most of them.  If he can run the tests himself, maybe he can refer me to a better Ob/Gyn or to an endocrinologist. Regardless of the "trying to get pregnant" factor, I would like to know WHY my periods are so out of whack.  I’ve been trying to figure that out ever since they went beserk.  I think I am entitled to that.  I don’t really see why running tests is such a big deal.  If I have to, I will pay for them myself. Also, I’m sick of the constant cramping.  Besides the pain, it makes me think "oh, I’m going to get my period"  and I go to the bathroom every hour to make sure I’m not bleeding.  Should I have to live like this?  I don’t think so. I really hope I have better luck with my regular doctor.  Good luck to you! Kelly

Your OB/GYN asked you that?????????? I had periods like clockwork on the Pill, even though I’d have 2 or 3 per year without it. I thought that always happened when you took the Pill. Tracy

Hi Kelly, I’d get a second opinion from another RE.  Or, if you saw only a GYN – go to a RE.  I’ve had crazy cycles since I’ve been 13 (I’m 38 now), getting only one or two periods a year through my teens.  No one ever said PCO. I’ve been trying to get pregnant for five years, and just switched to a RE last April.  Still no diagnosis of PCO.  I consulted another RE who says I have "slight" PCO.  RE number three, says I may, or may not, have it. Unfortunately, sometimes it’s hard to get the tests done that YOU may want from a doctor.  You should find a doctor that will work with you.  I’ve lost a lot of time blindly trusting doctors.  I now insist on what I want as far as tests, etc.   Good luck! GO TO AN ENDOCRINOLOGIST. GO TO AN ENDOCRINOLOGIST. GO TO AN ENDOCRINOLOGIST. GO TO AN ENDOCRINOLOGIST. Please. I went through the same things you did before I was able to find treatment. I went through the frustration of being told I was fat because I ate too much ,,,,,,,,, and when I gave the doctors a list of the foods I was eating, they accused me of being a closet eater. GO TO AN ENDOCRINOLOGIST. Please. please, please. Once you are diagnosed properly with PCO (yea, we know you have it but it will make YOU feel better when they tell you it’s official) you can get treatment and then you’ll realize you aren’t a freak or anything, you have a disease that can be treated There – that’s my 4 cents worth <G> PAM WINTER, owner of Winter Publishing, Inc. Hi Kelly,         I have had the same problems with my doctors in the past.  I don’t currently have a doctor(my husband is working a contract position and we don’t have insurance for another month)but I haven’t really wanted to find one either because I’ll hear the same old story, "when you lose the weight all the problems will disappear".  I was on the pill until 2 1/2 years ago and then my periods were normal and I didn’t have any other problems.  Since going off the pill, my periods are very irregular, I have lots of dark hairs on different parts of my body, hair on my head is thinning, gained a lot of weight very quickly, have developed acne, and I have no earthly idea when I’m ovulating because I’m trying to get pregnant!!           I posted a long version of my story about a week ago on this newsgroup(go to dejanews to read it if you like-it sounds like you’ve had the same problems I’ve had) hoping to get some advice about finding a good doctor in my area(southern Michigan) who knows about PCOS and would be willing to test me for it.  I know exactly how you feel because I don’t feel like my doctors have really listened to me or taken me seriously either!!  I tried several times to get my doctors to run test on me to see if I had any hormonal imbalances, but they said no, that i just needed to lose weight and everything would be better and that I too, was still young and my hormones would eventually balance themselves out.  That was 2 years ago and I’m now 31 and still not pregnant.  I really don’t want to be 35 or 40 when I have my first child you know?  I hope this at least helps to let you know that you aren’t alone.  I haven’t gotten any response to my post for advice on finding doctors who know about PCOS yet but I’m hoping that someone will read it and offer some advice.  Would love to stay in touch with you if you, if you like, because maybe we can offer each other some support!!  Maybe we could come up with some ideas for finding doctors between us.  Have a great week and I look forward to hearing from you!! As I posted yesterday, I believe I may have PCO. I went to my OB/GYN today for a yearly check-up, plus to answer some of my questions of why I’m not pg yet, and why are my cycles so irregular, and to bring up the PCO possibility. Well, she gave me an exam and asked me about my cycles.  I told her how irregular they are, anywhere from 30-60 days, sometimes even longer.  I also stressed that they have been like this for 3 yrs, used to be normal before that, and they were irregular before she put me on the Pill (last yr).  I told her how my PCO symptoms seem to have developed also about 3 yrs ago. She told me I had to wait until I have been trying for a year before she will run any tests, and that my cycles might staighten themselves out. She also gave me the classic "just relax, you are young and have plenty of time" spiel.  She didn’t think I had PCO because I had gotten pregnant as a teenager.  Well, my cycles were like clockwork then! She also kept asking me if my period was rergular while I was on the Pill.  Yes, of course it was.  All the pill does is make you bleed regularly, it doesn’t make you OVULATE regularly, which is my freakin’ problem!!!! I asked her if I should chart, she said I should write down when I get my period and when I think I’ve ovulated.  NO mention of BBT"S, cervical mucous, any of that. I was very upset when I left.  I almost feel like going to the ER and complaining of abdominal pain so I can get an ultrasound!  I’m calling my general practitioner tomorrow (who is very nice and doesn’t seem to have a problem with ordering tests).  I’m concerned about the insurance thing, because I belong to an HMO. Sorry this was so long, but I’m very upset.  I really feel like I wsa no taken seriously and I felt like a real idiot.  It was hard for me to say out loud to the Dr, "Gee, I’m fat and I have body hair and I have cramping all the time and I never no when the hell I’m going to get a period!"   Thank you for listening to this.  Any advce would be helpful. Kelly
