Question:

Birth control pills can help regulate your periods.  I’ve been getting cysts regularly for a long time.  I can tell the difference between a smaller one that will break on its own, and a larger one that I need to have checked out.  I have surgery when they are larger than a grapefruit. But although I have pain when they develop and break, it’s not as bad as you describe.  You need to see a doctor who specializes in these types of problems.  My gynecologist is the city’s fertility specialist, and this is all he’s sees, and he knows how to help.  You need to find someone like this.

Hi everyone. I hope you are all feeling ok today. I really just wanted to ask a question. I havent seen anyone mention this before and since it happens to me every month I just want to know if I am the only one it does happen to. I have cysts bust every month. I am at the end of my period now but Friday was a killer.I usually go numb from the top of my hip bones to my knees. It is horrible pain. During that pain I will take/do anything to make it stop. Usually this happens for two days but i have done it as much as five. I had a really large one bust in mid cycle in 96 and was in the hospital for two days before they decided it wasnt appendecitis(spelling sucks). The only good thing about that experience was the i.v. morphine! My dr just blew it off on follow up visit. Said if cyst was large enough could kill you. His only advice is to take anaprox(may as well take nothing   has no effect on me ) or Ibuprofen three days before my period. Maybe it would help a little if I knew when to expect my period but I dont. I am never on time. I am always early. This month 10 days early. If anyone else has this problem also let me know. If anyone has advice on what to do about it let me know. I basically live in hell and dont know of a way out. I am still debating a hyst but still think 28 is to young for one. Thanks for letting me have so many great people to turn to.  Hope you all have a painfree day.     Sherry

Sherry, Don’t assume that you are too young for a cyst, I’m 27 and have had them for years. I had the same experiece-being admitted to the hospital for abdominal pain and the doctor thinking it would be my appendix. It was a cyst that ruptured-big time. Whenever I go off BCPs, I usually feel the cyst ready to rupture. It scares me-the pain is so intense if I were driving or something- I’d probably go off the road! Good luck, Joanne

Have you considered BCPs to regulate your cycle?  At least than you could know when to expect it.  I don’t know if it would increase your problems with cysts, or aggravate any other conditions you have, but I do know, that for me, knowing exactly (within a few hours) of when to expect things does help me be able to attempt preventative pain relief.           Your description of going numb makes me really wonder now if that’s what happened to me back in ‘89…I had the worst period experience of my life..and let me tell ya, at only age 13, it’s almost enough to scar ya for life.  I went numb from my lower jaw, down the stomach, and down my legs…was cold sweating, pale as a ghost, the whole routine….Never did find out what happened…doc blew it off that i had obviously pinched a nerve from teh way I was sitting on the pot, tryign to deal with my cramps…never even bothered investigating. It was the only and only time I have ever had anythign like that happen. The closest I have come to that feeling again is from going into shock donating blood for the first time. Okay, enough rambling out of me…. Take care, Tricia =)
