Question:
Hi again all. All day today I have felt tired / sleepy, a little nauseous and have gone to the toilet at least 6 times. I have found that each time I have gone, I have been straining, and a few rabbit-droppings, accompanied with a little mucus is all that has come out. I find days like this really annoying, as there is no apparent trigger for today’s episode. Anyone else find this? I was going to eat a Mushroom Risotto for dinner, but I am starting to have second thoughts about that, due to the fact it has a high content of cream … Cheers all, Rob.
Response:
Hey Rob, I feel your pain. I haven’t done much but sat in the bathroom all day. I’ve had those episodes of high pain and small output many times too, and yes, it’s extremely annoying and frustrating. Today was my upper abdominal pain followed by normal stool, then less formed, then pudding, then liquid. I’ve had IBS for 7 years, but it’s NEVER been as bad as the past year or so. It used to be that once I went a time or 2, I’d be done for the day. Now I can feel the next attack is ready to come on, I just have to wait until it decides to happen again. And you’re right, no rhyme or reason to any of it. Typically the weekends are fairly good for me because I know I don’t have to deal with trying to go to work or anything. Today started that way early, then turned into my worst day in weeks real quick. I’m starting to get a little less confidence that this amitriptyline is going to do much for me, I’ve been on it for almost 2 weeks now, which is when it’s supposed to "kick in". Probably all that is going to happen is doubling the dose to see if that does any good. Funny thing (as I was in the middle of another attack) was that I got to thinking about how you said you got cold. I’m completely opposite, I get very hot and start to sweat, although my body isn’t hot at all. My head becomes soaked as if I’ve just finished running a marathon or something, but my forehead is cool to the touch and I have no fever or anything. Just kinda strange. It all goes away once the peak of the attack is over with. Hang in there, Doomie "RJF" <rob@_no*spAm_audiolight.co.uk> wrote in message

Hi Doomie, I can relate to all of that. I find that I can more or less predict what will happen when I have an attack – I know that I start out by feeling very tired, then a become cold and sweaty, then the cramping starts … and so on …. It is so strange that IBS is a problem that lies in the stomach, but the disease presents all these other symptoms – such as sweating, hot/cold flushes, tiredness, etc. How do you (and others in the group) deal with alcohol intake? Cheers Rob. "Doomie" <nos…@home.com> wrote in message

Hi Rob, Funny you should ask about the alcohol, I was just talking to a friend of mine about this. For me, it seems like the only time I feel "normal" (gut-wise) is when I’m drinking! I had pretty much given it up last July after being diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis (which it turns out I DON’T have), but when the doc asked me about drinking I told him I drink socially and never seem to have any problems when doing it. Now I’m talking about just a few drinks, not getting crazy with it. Anyway, I was having an exceptionally bad day last week and thought I’d try drinking just one to see what happened. Sure enough, my gut felt great! Of course over-doing it will cause the same problems any non-IBS person would experience too. This is something I’m going to discuss with my current GI doc next time I see him. I don’t know if it’s the alcohol taking the anxiety away that is helpful, or maybe even possibly numbing the nerves in the gut, slowing down the gut transit time, or some combination of all these things? I’m by no means encouraging anyone to go throw down some brews, it seems like the great majority of people with bowel problems can’t handle ANY alcohol, but for me it’s more effective than anything the drug companies have ever put out. I can count on one hand how many times I have drank in the past 12 months, but whenever I have, my gut problems completely disappeared for a short time. I’d be curious to hear if anyone else has noticed a similar phenomenon? Obviously Jack Daniel’s isn’t the cure, but I think if my Dr. is aware of the positive effects it has on my gut, then maybe that will clue him into a custom-tailored solution for me. It’s better to get it out than that it stays like "rabbit droppings" is my opinion. I rather have D. than C. to be honest. C. makes me feel even more sick. Just have your risotto perhaps things will go more smoothly afterwards. Misty. Hi Doomie, I can totally agree with what you have said Doomie – I don’t drink to an excess either – in actual fact, very rarely. Yesterday evening – (Sat 31st Jan) I went out for the evening with a few friends for drinks. Now, baring in mind I had posted here earlier that day, discussing the problems I was experiencing. Things had calmed down enough by the evening – (and a couple of tablets to help it!!) for me to go out. I started off on Lemonades, as I find that the caffeine levels are no where near as high in this, to what it is in cola. After a while one of the others stood up and offered to buy a round. I really fancied a vodka and lemonade, and said I would have one. He came back with a double voddy and lemonade for me, and it was lovely. I had another two doubles after that, and found – (just as you said doomie) that my bowels and tummy had completely calmed down. I woke up this morning, and experienced something that I haven’t in a long time – (well, the last time I had a drink) – complete calmness and no tummy cramps. I have been to the loo 3 times today, and feel great – - – Its a shame it won’t last long though – probably until tomorrow morning, and then everything will be back to normal. I think I will also mention this to my Doc, as there has to be something in Alcohol that calms the tummy??? Who knows!! – Its a temporary relief for me!! Regards, Rob.

Hi Rob, Hmmm…. very interesting that you’ve had success with liquor also. I should mention that beer of any kind gives me problems usually, so I don’t really drink it at all. I stick to Jack Daniel’s and Coke and that almost ALWAYS seems to calm things down for some reason. You’d think the caffeine in the Coke would be a problem, but it’s not. As I said before, I had been cutting alcohol out completely since the UC diagnosis, but interestingly enough, just before that I was in Chicago for a week for training. During my time there, I had 2 Jack & Coke’s with dinner each night. Sure it was Chicago, but I couldn’t bear the thought of public transportation to go see a Cubs game, so eating and drinking was pretty much the highlight of the trip. I had absolutely NO problems my whole trip, including getting stuck in rush-hour traffic on my way home for 2 hours!!! Then again in Ohio for another 45 minutes because of a wreck. Now this was when I was in slightly better shape than I’m in now, but still, it was a MAJOR accomplishment even back then. Traffic jams were always the worst for me prior to my current state. I suspect that the effects have to do with the anti-anxiety effects plus the central nervous system depressant effects. Beer must be bad because it’s so fizzy and causes gas. The Coke content is minimal
As long as you’re in control, maybe the alcohol does some positive things for us with IBS problems? Please let me know what your doc has to say about this and I’ll do the same. Only problem for me is I don’t see my doc until mid-March to check my progress on the amitriptyline trial. Doomie "RJF" <rob@_no*spAm_audiolight.co.uk> wrote in message
