Pain after conception (preg mentioned)
Question:
Jane, I just had an ectopic three weeks ago. I had very severe cramps and pain in my left side. I was 5 weeks pg. Keep an eye on your HCG levels, my RE just told me today at my post-op appointment that they are the tell tale sign of something wrong like an ectopic. (they should close to double every two days) Call the Dr. for all your worries…you worked hard for this! good luck and I hope this helps!!!

After years of trying we found out we are 3 weeks pregnant after our first IUI. The last couple of days I have had some slight pains on the right and left side of my lower abdomen. They are not bad, just enough that I notice them. Could this be the beginning feelings of an ectopic pregnancy? How would I know if it was ectopic? Or is this normal because my uterus is expanding and perhaps my ovaries are still enlarged after Gonal F? Anyone have any input? I have never been down this road before!! Thanks!! Jane
It’s quite probably just normal early uterine stretching. I felt the same kind of discomfort. The reason for them is now fast alseep downstairs! Congratulations on your pregnancy! -Nancy Reynolds

I had the same feeling, very slight cramps for about two weeks after I got a pos pg test. My RE wasn’t worried, they have gone away and I am still pg. Congratulations and I hope you have a great 9 months Teri Z – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – After years of trying we found out we are 3 weeks pregnant after our first IUI. Hi Jane, When I had my ectopic the first sign was bleeding like a heavy period, but more intense. Also, it was in my right tube and I kept feeling extremely sharp pains in my right side, which made me almost double over in pain. Hope this helps!!

Hi Jane, a very good friend of mine had an ectopic pregnancy earlier this year. She suddenly started to bleed mid-cycle and had sharp cramps. So if your pain is just ‘noticeable’ but not really bad, your are probably okay. But I would see the doc asap. Good luck! Sabine

How long weree you on gonul f? When I first found out that I was preg. with my son. The first thing that I can remember is cramps as if I were going to start my period and lower abdominal pain. Try and stay positive that this is normal because a lot of people have felt the abdominal pain. I believe that it is your uterus expanding. This was one of the signs in my book about pregnancies. Kim

I also had those pains and felt afraid that it was a sign of ectopic. Every day I would wait for the pain to grow and then I’d have to rush to the hospital because, of course, I had to have an ectopic pregnancy. I don’t know why I thought that… there was no reason. I think that I felt that because I was lucky enough to get pregnant something had to go wrong. Thankfully, I didn’t have an ectopic… I think it was a combination of the stretching of the uterus and ligaments along with my enlarged ovaries. Even though the baby is tiny at 3 weeks, the uterus is growing and filling with fluids. Your blood is congesting in your uterus and genital area. Lots of funny feelings. I’m now 15 weeks pregnant and still have strange feelings in my abdomen constantly. I always have the urge to call my doctor, but then I stop and realize that I’m "normal" now. It’s going to be strange as you go to the OB’s office and EVERYONE is pregnant. It goes from being this miracle experience to one of "go wait in line with the rest of them." You know what? I think it takes months, if ever, before we infertility patients can feel aches and pains and not think it’s a problem. Like, I was convinced I had an ectopic. I think because I thought I was lucky enough to get pregnant so I just assumed something would go wrong. Either it had to be ectopic or I was certain I would miscarry. Thank god I haven’t and I pray I won’t. Good luck to you and I pray your pregnancy is easy. Heather

Jane, Pain in your ovarian area can be completely normal during pregnancy. At this early point it could very well be the ovaries working and producing the necessary progesterone. If it becomes real pain please see your doctor. And yes, your ovaries could still be enlarged from the Gonal F. Good luck and congratulations on your pregnancy. Jeanne

Congrats on your pregnancy! It’s probably the "round ligaments" stretching as your uterus expands (that’s really what they’re called). You can expect that to continue throughout the pregnancy but mostly noticeable during the first trimester. I’ve been told that ectopic is a much more severe pain. Leigh in raLeigh
