Purrayers for Joel, please
Question:
Joel woke me at 2:30am this morning to tell me had severe abdominal pain and could I please take him to the hospital. To say he looked bloody aweful is understatement – he was very white with green around his eyes. His lips were purplish as were his fingernails. And if anyone knows Joel, him *asking* to be taken to a hospital means it is serious indeed. So we went to the good hospital in the area where they sucked lots of blood, got a urine sample and pumped him full of pethidine. Then the pain was bearable for about 2 hours before the pethidine wears off and the stabbing sharp pains come back. I’ve been in hospital with him the whole night and he does *not* look good, The docs poke and prode but won’t say a thing "until the bloodwork comes back". Which they have been swearing since 3am would only be a couple of hours. It got to the point I really needed to catch some ZZ’s myself and also there were the critters to be fed, so I cam home at 8:30am, and just before I left, they were organising chest and abdominal x-rays. No-one will say *anything* about it or reassure us its probably nothing. I know I’m scared, I’m sure Joel is too. The pain is in the "Upper left quadrant" of his belly. Although constantly in pain, the intensity comes in waves. He is worse if he lies on his right side, tries to burp cough or laugh, or eat or drink. I’ll be going back to the hospital as soon as I get a few hours shut-eye (I don’t feel tired, but my really bad driving on the way home belied the fact that really I am exhausted), and I know I can rely on you wonderful folk to bolster him (and me) up with purrs, prayers headbutts and the like. Thanks, and I’ll update everyone as I can. (I won’t be reading the NG or catslaves much until we know whats going on, sorry) Thanks, Yowie

I am so sorry for him. I have been in theat situation and it is serious. Sounds t me like severe gall bladder pain. Like maybe a lodged stone holding the bile duct open. Is or was he vomiting? I am praying for him and you. Maybe you could hug Fluffy when you are home. Poor thing must be missing Joel awfully. And the hugging would do you good, too. Blessings be upon you, CATherine

Joel was kicked out of hospital at 10am this morning, since they had no idea what it was or how to treat it. They’ve done blood & urinry work, came back normal, they did abdominal & chest xrays, which came back normal exept a minor chest infection (well, d’uh, he’s got a bit of a cough like everyone else- its winter here). They’ve given him antibiotics and paracetemol and told him to come back if it gets worse. Considering that pethidine did not fully stop the pain, I wonder what on earth two tabs of paracetemol every 6 hours are supposed to do. And I think the anti-biotics are just there because they won’t do any harm otherwise. On the way back from the hospital, he got his prescription for the anti-biotics filled, and got some Mylanta and a mild laxative just in case it was severe wind pain. Apparantly the Mylanta really helped. So maybe its a stomach thing. I just hope it goes away by itself. I don’t mind staying up all night with him at the hospital so much as them not seeming to listen or do their jobs properly. I know they are understaffed and overworked (we stayed in Emergency all night because there were no beds anywhere else) but it seems to me they booted him out unfairly simply because they needed the beds and that they didn’t thinkthey could do much for him. Heck, the least they could do would be give him a script for the *good* painkilling drugs, not stupid paracetemol, because they *knew* he was in severe pain (a "7" if that makes any sense). Mutter mutter. Well, he’s sleeping now. Let shope the ocmbination of antibiotics, the laxative and of course allt he prayer s& purrs work their magic and he feels better when he wakes up. Yowie

The pain was in the one area – lower abdomen. It was excruciating for Vernon – the effect it had on him – I tell, you it scared me. It was about 13 years ago (Nathan was a baby) and he hasn’t had it since – nothing can be done about it in aby event, if it does happen again. I’m just grateful he’s not a horse (well… part of him is.. evil grin). *hugs* helen s p.s. Women’s road cycle race this morning. Australian took a *nasty* fall – she got up and got back on her bike – all credit to her, but, ouch, that road rash – I hope she didn’t do anything serious to herself. FWIW, something similar happened to me a long time ago. Mysterious, horrible, awful pain in my abdomen and lower back. The odd thing was it only came at night, during the day I was uncomfortable but relatively OK. On the third night in a row of this, my mom took me to the hospital. They gave me a shot of some pain killer and ran all kinds of tests – upper and lower GI, blood tests, urinalysis, the works. They never did figure out what it was (one of the docs wrote "Pancreatitis?" on my chart) but the pain never returned after they gave me the shot of painkiller. I stayed in the hospital for 24 hours for "observation" then they sent me home. To this day I have no idea what it was. I hope Joel recovers quickly and this turns out to be nothing serious. Beth
