I have lots of lower back pain, too, and I manage it with physio treatment and gentle exercise. I also use hot water bottles or hotpacks, so long as it doesn’t raise my core temperature, and a TENS machine. Swimming is good for it, or hydrotherapy, if you have access to it. But from the level of pain you’re starting from this is a little way off. Bed rest does wonders when the pain is extreme. You also need to look at your activities to see what makes it worse. Do you sit a lot in your job? If so, you need to make sure you have good support in your lumbar area and under your legs almost to the knees. A UTI can certainly cause back pain. Have you had adequate treatment for it? I had something called trigonitis a while ago. It started from a UTI, but persisted after. It’s not an infection. It’s an inflammation of a muscle deep inside. I’m not clear about exactly where this muscle is, but, as I understand it, it’s between the back wall of the bladder and the other pelvic structures around it. It gave me bad back and abdominal pain, and I was referred to a urologist for treatment. He did a urodynamic study which showed that I can’t empty my bladder completely. Then he did a cystoscopy, and stretched my bladder. Not comfortable at the time, but it did help. He put me on macrodantin, but now I’m just treating it with herbs and drinking lots of water. My back is still sore, but manageable. But my legs still drag when I’m tired. I hope you can track down the cause of your pain. I know doctors sometimes don’t take it too seriously, because lower back pain is one of the most common complaints that takes people to them. Meanwhile, take it REALLY easy and give your poor back a chance to heal. All the best. Carmel – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -"Shirley B." wrote: > Robin, hi. Robin, hi. Don’t know what your level of disability is but it sounds like you’re still mobile. I had been having some extremely bad low back pain. Found out it was from the way I’m walking due to the MS — either with a cane, or from my left leg kind of dragging, which caused me to kind of swing my hip. All of this was pulling at my spine. My doctor, believe it or not, sent me to a chiropractor. After a couple of visits a month for about six months I was 98% better. Now I only go in once a month for maintenance. Also, and maybe most important, I switched from a cane to a walker. I am able to move faster, am more secure, and I’m straight, posture-wise, when I walk. The difference is day and nite. I got a 3-wheeled walker, with wheels about 4 or 5" in dia., so I can even go onto grass or gravel with it. you might want to give a chiro a try.
