Question:

Check out http://www.ultranet.ca/Healthwaves for references that the studies came from.  There is also a listing of 25 ingredient myths and what those ingredients really do.  A real eye-opener.

It opened my eyes — to what the likes of you are willing to do to push products at the consumer. I didn’t understand what you were talking about David until I went to this guy’s site.  There is a place on the site that offers pros and cons on some product additives.  I agree with some of the info; disagree with others, but the guy is selling skin products I assume without these ingredients. The problem hear is that it’s MLM literature and I have yet to see any thing that links SLS to cancer or it even being toxic at the level it’s used at. Years ago sacrine was used and some study found it caused cancer. The rats where the given the equivalent sacrine that was in 24 cans of coke on a daily basis for 1 year. that links SLS to cancer or it even being toxic at the level it’s used at. I agree at being skeptical because it’s coming from an MLM, but this MLM has been around for quite awhile and they don’t last that long when they use hype. What’s the difference in the info they give on the net and in their literature when compared with what you see on tv and in magazines from non-MLMs other than less is spent on advertising by MLMs?  Also, did you see the info on SLS on one of the morning programs a few months ago?  That wasn’t from any MLM.

I’m not interested in any MLM bullshit unsubstantiated crap. Post the test results up here where they can be found and not a single study. No data on it’s being linked to cancer but it is certainly a pollutant and toxic to the body.

Actually, it doesn’t look all that bad, even after you wade through the cruft in the web site.  After all, you don’t swallow toothpaste (well, you’re not supposed to, anyway) and it’s only in your mouth for a minute or so.

David, I have often thought how many items I swallow, put on my skin, or breathe in where someone has said it was only a small amount that wasn’t going to affect me.  If anyone has seen information about this same thing would you please post or email me? Thanks Mikeo

A short time back there was a thread about the dangers of sodium lauryl sulfate. I went to the health food store and found a shampoo that stated it did not contain sodium lauryl sulfate. So, what sudsing agent did it contain? Sodium laureth sulfate. What’s the difference? Do those condemning "lauryl" give a pass on "laureth"?

I ran a quick check through my North American chemicals data base and found no hazards listed for "sodium lauryl sulfate".  This means that the major recognized cancer agencies have looked at any data, if such exists, and have concluded that there is no problem.  I have seen a lot of half-assed cancer studies that were published but do not stand up to scientific scrutiny. I hate to disagree but when I do, I provide the link to the data and let others decide.  Here it is http://www.fisher1.com/fb/itv?16..f97.4.msf0003.101.1×2x48… here is another that is used by the US Occupational and Health Administration gopher://gopher.chem.utah.edu:70/00/MSDS/S/SODIUM%20DODECYL%20SULFATE%20%28 SDS%29 I won’t debate whose or what product is good or bad.  But here is the information on the chemical. —– C. I guess I have to post the hazards here so they can be read.  I did not read split ends or drying hair in either MSDS I linked.  Here is the health effects section from one of the MSDS’s I provided the link to in an earlier post. Quote –  **** SECTION 3 – HAZARDS IDENTIFICATION ****                                EMERGENCY OVERVIEW Appearance: White to cream-colored crystals, flakes or powder. Danger! Causes skin burns. Causes eye burns. Causes digestive tract burns. Causes respiratory tract irritation. May cause allergic skin reaction. May be harmful if swallowed. This substance has caused adverse reproductive and fetal effects in animals. Target Organs: None. Potential Health Effects      Eye:           Causes eye burns.      Skin:           Causes skin burns. May cause skin sensitization, an allergic           reaction, which becomes evident upon re-exposure to this material.      Ingestion:           May cause severe digestive tract irritation with abdominal pain,           nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. May cause burns to the digestive           tract.      Inhalation:           Dust is irritating to the respiratory tract.      Chronic:           Prolonged or repeated skin contact may cause defatting and           dermatitis. End Quote I didn’t read drying hair or split ends. Here are the documented routes of entry quoted again from the MSDS Quote – ROUTES OF ENTRY   INHALATION, SKIN CONTACT, EYE CONTACT End Quote If you have research documentation from a peer reviewed journal or manufacturer information on drying hair or split ends, I would like to see it posted,  By the way, you were correct on cancer effect as it is not currently listed by ACGIH, IARC, NIOSH, NTP, or OSHA as carcinogenic. —– C. J. Lovell

//  Causes skin burns. Causes eye burns. Causes digestive tract burns. Causes respiratory tract irritation.// So don’t rub the pure powder on your skin. (I did without any problems.) Don’t put it into your eyes, eat it or snort it. I know that ruins your plans for the weekend… J
