Well as long as it was a dime and not 2 nickels or 10 pennies I guess its allright

Irma Bombeck once said … when your first child swallows a dime, you call the doctor in a panic. When the second child swallows a dime, you just wait until it passes. By the time the third ones comes along you say "That’s coming out of your allowance!" Cissy

A nickle can be another story, however. When my now 5-year-old daughter was almost four, she swallowed a nickle and immediately complained of abdominal pain. We knew that she was truly in pain and went to the E.R. The triage nurse was very unimpressed and just assumed that it was just another coin going through the pipes. We did not get quick treatment. She was not x-rayed for 2 hours. When it came through, there was the nickle, lodged in her esophogus and she had been in pain all this time. Then she was prepped for surgery which didn’t actually occur until 6 pm (we went in at 10 am). All because this nurse didn’t take us seriously. If she had, the pediatric surgeon in endoscopy would have dealt with it immediately, but instead we had to wait until he could come back to the hospital. Anyway, she had general anaesthesia and it was removed with an endoscope that took a picture while it was doing it. She recovered just fine. Anyway, my point is that if there’s pain, then it needs to be looked into. They say dimes always go through and pennies usually do, but nickles and quarters can get into some trouble. Laura

When I was about 7 (I’m now 27), I swallowed a screw. In the x-rays the screw showed a very pointy tip and could have done some damage but in the end I survived it. I am sure that the dime will pass without any trouble.

Alisha…Mommy to Paige (the human cash register) and Kenny – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – X-no-archive: yes Well, it happened….Paige swallowed a dime. (She’s 5, I didn’t expect it out of her, maybe her 2 year old brother!) She’s okay, I called Ask-A-Nurse to make sure. They said it should "all come out in the end"! But of course I have to look for it over the next few days and make sure. Anybody else ever deal with this, and if so did it ever get serious? Medical opinion varies on what to do about this. Unfortunately, the doctor on call the night we thought my older son did this, as a toddler, was of the conservative school….search each poop thoroughly, and come back if it doesn’t turn up in a week. A truly horrifying experience, vastly worse than merely changing the diapers. After a week, when the coin had still not appeared, my husband took him in to our own doctor, where we got the opposite school of thought…."There’s no need to worry or x-ray unless the child shows symptoms or signs of discomfort." How we wished we’d have talked to *that* doctor the night it happened!
So…there’s no "of course" about whether or not you have to look for the dime afterwards. — Would you like to learn to tie dye? See my (non-commercial, ad-free) Hand Dyeing pages at http://www.flash.net/~pburch/dyeing.html

My daughter swallowed a penny when she was about 5 (which also surprised us, as I thought she was well past the swallow everything in sight stage!). Although we took her to the emergency room and had her X-rayed, the technician told us that as a kid, he probably had change of a dollar in his digestive system and was never the worse for it. Anyway we were assured that swallowed coins pass harmlessly through the body and are excreted in a few days, which was exactly what happened. Lisa

I went through this with my 2 year old a few months back. I was told to have her xrayed to make sure it went all the way down and wasn’t stuck anywhere. Everything turned out ok but just be prepared that it may take several days for her to pass it. I think it took my daughter just over a week!! It was stuck in a piece of plastic and she pulled it with her teeth. She didn’t mean to swallow it. No one believed her at first but it showed up on the x-ray. She had to eat a lot of celery, and foods like that. At least a dime doesn’t have a sharp end! Jeanne mother of John 23mo. and Amy 4mo.

Never had it with the kid, but as an adult I swallowed a brand new gold crown. that thing was cleaned REAL GOOD before it went back in my mouth!! Carol
It happened to me too!!! The dentist was fitting the crown, and went to take it off to do something else to it and it flipped up and hit the roof of my mouth and went down my throat. Fortunately for me, I caught it and didn’t swallow it. The only reason for retrieving it was that it was gold, and was … well… expensive to replace. I thought it was very unfair that something the dentist did which was not my fault would have resulted in considerable inconvenience for me. Well, it happened….Paige swallowed a dime. My children no, clients yes. The types of things our children will swallow will usually pass through with out any trouble as you allready know from Ask-A-Nurse. You get into problems areas when the item swallowed is sharp, very odd shaped, corrosive, etc. I have seen keys swallowed, nuts and bolts, pieces of the sink. When these type of things are swallowed then they can turn into a big deal. Starting with barium swallows to follow the object through the body. Some objects due to size, shape, etc.. end up having to be surgically removed. But again these are not the things we typically see our children swallow, so don’t fret.
