Both of those problems truly suck. Sorry. At least you’re keeping your sense of humor. That and the cats should be able to get you through, don’t you think? Chak — In mathematics you don’t understand things. You just get used to them. –Johann von Neumann

It’s a congenital condition and some people experience normal lives with no symptoms at all . Because of the diversity of symptoms people are very often misdiagnosed or treated as hypochondriacs. Prior to MRI scans it was thought to be a *very* rare condition and most cases were found post mortem. It can be associated with other abnormalities such as Cleft Pallet (I have an abnormally high pallet), Spina Bifida (I have Occluded Spina Bifida) and Syringomyelia. The only *cure* is surgery to enlarge the Posterior Fossa. The prognosis is best in cases of early detection or mild symptoms but up to 30% of patients experience a reoccurrence of symptoms after a few years. The decision to have surgery depends on the severity of symptoms and their effect on QOL and of course any nerve damage existing prior to surgery will still be there afterwards. At the moment I’m choosing to live with my symptoms (I wrote a list out but it was too depressing reading it so I deleted it ). The worst problem for me are the fainting/nausea & vomiting/severe abdominal pain episodes I have at night, they usually occur after I’ve been asleep for 2 to 3 hours. Another problem is an inability some days to string words together to make an understandable sentence . — Shirley see my cats at http://communities.msn.co.uk/Friendsfamilyandfelines2 http://uk.msnusers.com/friendsfamilyandfelines3

You’re thinking what’s she on about
My cervical smear test came back clear as did my mammogram, my hearing test yesterday came back no change from last year. The ENT Dr thinks my hearing problems are caused by my Eustachian tubes not working correctly so she prescribed a steroid nasal spray, I’m hoping it will help with the balance problems I’ve been having too. Next Monday I’m going to get my head tested (neurologist ) and that should be the end of being prodded and poked at for a few months…….yippee ! — Shirley see my cats at http://communities.msn.co.uk/Friendsfamilyandfelines2 http://uk.msnusers.com/friendsfamilyandfelines3

I think she has a condition–begins with ‘ch’ maybe?–that has to do with the brain stem area. Or maybe that’s someone else. Forgive me if I am mistaken. Marilee – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -> Cathering

I’m sure you’re correct. I don’t remember the name of her malady either. Sharon……..Don’t think of it as getting hot flashes. Think of it as your inner child playing with matches.

I think you are right and are thinking of Chiari Malformation, which is a brain stem problem. Here is a link that describes it, not sure how good the site is: http://tribble.missouri.edu/ns/chiari/aboutchiarimalformation.htm sue

To prove what’s sitting on top of my neck is one <eg> It’s for a second opinion to decide if my fainting episodes are caused by cerebella ectopia, the neuro. I normally see isn’t experienced with that condition so he wants a second opinion. — Shirley see my cats at http://communities.msn.co.uk/Friendsfamilyandfelines2 http://uk.msnusers.com/friendsfamilyandfelines3

Chiari Malformation or Cerebella Ectopia or Herniated Cerebella Tonsils, it can cause compression of the brainstem and interfere with the flow of cerebral spinal fluid among other things. You have a good memory Marilee

"Cerebella ectopia." Sounds like some lovely exotic flower. But I’ve spent a little time this morning looking it up, and it doesn’t look good. Is this a condition that requires treatment? IYDM, can you tell us a little about it? This is the Chiari Malformation, right? Chak — In mathematics you don’t understand things. You just get used to them. –Johann von Neumann
