Yikes!! My ileostomy hurts
Question:
Hi Roy, what you describe regarding the pressure, stoma, the soreness even during and after output is just about what is happening to me. The only difference is that I get this continuously throughout the day. It(the pain) begins almost straight after I’ve eaten breakfast and can last for an hour or two, by the time it has eased I’m hungry, and away we go again. I also empty my pouch about 15 times a day. BTW,the skin around the stoma is in perfect condition so I know it’s not that. I see my GI this wednesday and he will set me up so he can have a look. I’m convinced he has no other option. Anyway we’ll take it from there. John Harman(I) PS. As you know Roy I sent you a private e-mail. But then I realised the purpose of this support group is to make our infomation availiable to everyone. Gidday All, I had my examination last wednesday for the pain from my ileostomy. I think it was called an "intubogy" <spelling> The GI said it was all clear, no kinks, strictures, scar tissue, and no crohns, as far as they could see(13 inches. All very wonderfull but it doesn’t solve my problem. It seems to add up to small blockages as Sonjia said, and maybe the pressure on my intestine. There is some conection with food, and even though I chew chew chew, pressure builds up a small blockage occurs near the outlet and my little *rosebud* hurts. Thats life!! Roy, seems a little harsh to kneel to the porcline god!!! I use a chair and set comfortably in front of the toilet, lean forward slightly, with the pouch in the bowl, flush the toilet and when water is at the lowest level un clip ane pouch hopefully aiming it at the water less area so there is less spashing. If you are having mini-blockages, remember chew chew chew chew in to small small fine area, also try some grape juice to help it come through. Godd health. Hi Kathleen— Yes, I know what you mean on gas and "Fire Away" <grin> What happens to me is soooo much pressure that I cannot even tilt the pouch up. I mean super super out and out hard pouch. That’s when I resort to kneeling, and get so very sore when the pressure in my intestines suddenly deflate. Like I said, usually from someting I did wrong—eating raw calouflower (sp?) with dip at a party, too much beer and bratwurst, etc. Btw, chew cauloflower until it’s tiny tiny pieces to avoid a blockage, plus it ends up coming out like "sand" in the pouch. With my last blockage I only had pain in the area of the stoma. The stoma itself became swollen and area around the stoma ( about the size of the wafer and tape) was very tender and firm. The onset was rather sudden. Went from mild discomfort to severe pain, nausea and vomiting within an hour. After the blockage cleared the output was very foul smelling, and still had some tenderness in the area for a couple of days. Maybe you have a partial blockage since it lasted longer. Sonja

Thanks for your reply Sonja. This is pretty unusual I know, and there are similarities with your description. I’m sure the blockages occur but it is over before the cramps, abdominal pain, and vomiting starts. I think my bowel, stomach wall muscle and my hernia are beginning to become intertwined. It’s the only thing I can think of that could cause such sharp pain. The pain has been getting worse since yesterday, so sharp and unexpected it’s stops me cold in my tracks. I’ve made my appointments with my pain doc for next week and my GI the week after. It’s hard not to think the worst:o( If I was a Brit I could tell myself to "Keep a stiff upper lip"<g> Thanks again Sonja, Regards,John John Harman (I)harm…@ircnet.com.au Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/ Share what you know. Hi– I sometimes get mini-blockages that last overnight and I wake up with a huge pouch in the early am. Whatever it is worth, my stoma hurts alot when output comes out the next 3 or 4 days (actually it does feel like the stoma, though we are not supposed to feel pain there), and the skin where the wafer is, will hurt intensely too, both continuously, and during output . (ileostomy). Then the soreness goes away gradually, so it seems the mini-blockages just cause like a "sprain", that heals gradually. Hope this is some help. No throwing up, but bad bad odor and discharge. The best way I have found to empty a pouch that full of output and air is to kneel in front of the toilet, let the pouch hang inside the toilet, then (very) carefully remove the clip. Aim down real good, it really comes out!!. Maybe use toilet paper to cover the loosening clip. Several layers. A bit hard on the knees, the rug mat helps alot. Then the soreness seems to start. Guess the intestines inside me are at the same high pressure as the pouch, and that may cause the soreness, when the pressure suddenly goes down when I empty. Hope this helps, as far as mini-blockages. Usually caused by my own stupidity of eating too fast without chewing fully, or leafy products that must curl up to form a web, net, or a dam. Hi: I wake up in the morning with a pouch full of air and ’stuff" every morning. That’s quite normal because it’s been so many hours. I never considered it’s because of a blockage. I sleep through the night now. But what I do when emptying my pouch even when full, is bring the entire pouch upwards, remove the clip, peel back the end of the pouch where you drain somewhat, that way it stays clean where you handle it, clamp down with your fingers, line some toilet tissue in the toilet, and aim and fire!
The E.T. nurses at Lahey clinic were very good on advising how to and and the newest in appliances. Any other questions, feel free to ask. ***Kathleen***

Hi All, I’m hoping someone out there has had a similar problem. I’ve been generating mild to acute pain from my ostomy site. It’s been going on for a while and now it has reached the stage where it is becomming a big problem. I’ve got a small hernia there as well so initially I assumed that was causing the problem. I’ve seen my GI and he says hmmmmmmm…….. Anyway he referred me to a pain clinic and I got some tabs (buprenorphine,.2mg) they don’t even help the pain in it’s irritating stage. So I’ll start over again, GI,pain clinic, etc. but I’m in hope that it may be similar to someone else amongst this (great) group. Firstly I thought it was just the hernia, although I didn’t think hernias caused too much pain, but the pain that I had last thursday was a biggie. My wife thought I was going to faint. I think I was wobbly. The next day all the material that came out of my bag smelt really bad, very much like when I have a blockage. I’ve had lots of blockages but the pain from them is all over my abdomen(if it hasn’t cleared in 10/12 hours I go to the hospital, get a shot of pethidiene and it clears) this pain comes directly from the heart of my stoma. BTW Earl, I’m going to try the bath thing next time, it might save me from spending 2 days in hospital:o) I’ve rung my ET nurse but haven’t been able to get her yet. It’s got me a bit worried, I’ve had a perforated bowel before and I don’t want that again. I’ve also got short bowel syndrome so they can’t remove anymore of it. My surgeon doesn’t want to go in again because of all the scar tissue, I just hope he doesn’t have to. John Harman (I) Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/ Share what you know.
