Chronic neck pain is a condition that many people suffer worldwide. There are many causes, symptoms and ways to relieve chronic neck pain.

What is chronic neck pain?

Any pain in the neck that persists longer than a few days is considered chronic neck pain. While there are many causes for chronic neck pain, some are much more common than others. There are many different ways to treat chronic neck pain. Treatment can be administered at home naturally, with over the counter drugs and by a physician or chiropractor.

What are some causes for chronic neck pain?

There are many conditions and diseases that cause chronic neck pain, especially ones that deal with the tissue of the neck or conditions involving the spine. Whiplash is very common and is usually caused by an abrupt acceleration or deceleration force such as a car accident. A pinched nerve located in the neck can also cause a lot of pain. Pinched nerves are caused by compression or pressure resulting in damaging a nerve in a given area. This can happen at any time, but is more common from sleeping in a bad position. Degenerative disc disease, sciatica, and herniated discs can cause neck pain but are not as common and are chronic conditions.

How is chronic neck pain diagnosed?

A trip to your physician will be needed to diagnose chronic neck pain. Your doctor will check the area and ask about any past injuries of the neck. He or she will want to know how much pain you are in, how long it has lasted, and how far the pain radiates. Your neck will be will be examined while in motion and while at rest. An x-ray might be necessary or even possibly a CAT scan.

How can I treat chronic neck pain?

Natural home remedies for pain including applying head and/or cold to the area, sometimes alternating between the two in order to relieve pain and reduce any swelling. Over the counter medications such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen can be taken for pain. Ibuprofen will also help reduce swelling. A doctor may prescribe pain relievers or order specific neck stretches and exercises daily. If you visit a chiropractor, you can have your neck adjusted to realign vertebrae and relieve discomfort in the area.

What is head pain?

Head pain is defined as any type of pain in your head that is stabbing, throbbing, or just a dull ache. Head pain can occur anywhere on the head, most commonly the front and sides of the head.

What could be causing my head pain?

Many different things can cause head pain. A headache is the primary cause of most head pain. The most severe type of headache are migraine headaches. Head pain is also caused by trauma to the head usually resulting from some type of accident occurring. The most serious type of head pain comes from any medical condition, such as a tumor or cancer involving the brain.

Should I see a doctor for head pain?

Most common types of head pain, such as head pain resulting from a headache or migraine headache, can be treated easily with over the counter pain reliever. However, if you are suffering from headaches on a regular basis or have a headache that won’t go away and worsens over time, you need to seek medical attention immediately. If you’ve had an accident that resulted in a head injury it’s important to see a doctor just to rule out something like a concussion. If your head pain is accompanied by other symptoms such as dizziness, vision loss, stiff neck, or loss of balance medical attention should be immediately sought out as these symptoms point to a serious problem.

What are possible treatment options for head pain?

The most common treatment for head pain are over the counter pain relievers such as acetaminophen, ibuprofen, or aspirin. You can find these drugs at any store and they will usually get rid of head pain from a minor headache or something similar. If your head pain is caused by something more serious than a headache, a doctor will prescribe a stronger pain reliever for you to take. Some people like to go the natural route to relieve their head pain and try things like hypnosis and acupuncture. Not everyone reports success with these less conventional methods but for some it’s worth a try.

Question: I’ve been experiencing terrible headache pain above my eyes. What is it, and what can I do about it?

Answer: You are probably suffering from Sinusitis, although it could also be a migraine.

Sinusitis is a condition involving inflammation and infection of the sinuses. There are several different sinus cavities in the skull, and mucus is constantly passing through them. Sometimes the mucus gets clogged, and becomes infested with bacteria or fungi. This causes inflammation and pain. The area of the pain depends on which sinus is infected. Pain behind the eyes is usually caused by an infection of the frontal sinuses. Pain from other infected sinuses can manifest in the cheeks and teeth, and on top of the head.

Extreme cases of so-called “chronic” sinusitis can be a debilitating, causing people to suffer constant severe pain for months at a time, but most cases of sinusitis are temporary, and may occur because of allergies or as a leftover effect from a severe cold.

The first thing you should try is taking an over-the-counter pain medication like Ibuprofen or acetaminophen. This will help you deal with the pain, and hopefully the sinus infection will go away on its own. Breathing in steam is also a good remedy. You can try taking a long hot shower, and it will sometimes help loosen up the sinuses and relieve your symptoms.

If the symptoms continue for more than a week, you should see a doctor. He will probably prescribe antibiotics as an initial treatment. Antibiotics can be helpful in some cases of sinusitis, but it’s not uncommon for them to fail. The condition has many different bacterial and fungal causes and it can be hard to find an effective antibiotic. One of the most effective treatments for chronic sinusitis is a mix of steroid nasal sprays, and saline nasal washes. The washes help your body clear away the mucus, while the steroid spray helps deal with inflammation and pain. If your sinusitis persists for a long time, you’re doctor may begin a treatment plan along these lines.

Migraine is another possibility, although it’s very unlikely. Migraine pain can manifest in a very similar way to a sinus headache, but it is usually accompanied with other symptoms, like nausea, and light sensitivity. If you have some of these other symptoms, you can assume that it might be a migraine, and you should see a doctor. There are prescription medications that can help people cope with migraines. In the meantime, you should try over the same over-the-counter pain meds you would use for sinusitis.

There are individuals that suffer severely from jaw pain. Common problems that cause jaw pain are Temporomandibular joint disorder or TMJ, clenching and/or grinding of the teeth (Bruxism) and stress. Jaw conditions of this nature are usually quite painful. However, they can be treated with anti-inflammatory medication, mouth devices and jaw exercises. Another common condition that is often confused with TMJ or problems with teeth is an old-fashioned ear infection.

There are a number of conditions that lead to TMJ such as jaw clenching and teeth grinding. While an individual can clench their jaws and grind their teeth, it does not mean that it will lead to TMJ. Though both conditions are leading contributors. There are several devices that will help minimize the amount of grinding and clenching that is done.

Osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis are also contributing factors of TMJ and pain in the jaw. Arthritis can cause inflammation in the joints of both children and adults. Both osteo- and rheumatoid arthritis damage the cartilage and erode the bone and create deformities in the joints. With the destruction of cartilage, the jaw joint operates in a bone on bone mechanism creating severe pain.

Stress is also a major factor in clenching and in turn a contributing factor in the jaw pain cycle. Many people find themselves clenching during the day when their stress levels are elevated. Stress relieving techniques and/or clenching devices can be used to assist in the stress relief. Occassionally when an individual is aware of their clenching, they are able to conscoiusly slow down or even train themselves not to clench.

Dental companies have developed products designed for night teeth grinding and clenching. They are similar to what you would see football players wearing. They are inexpensive and easy to use. If the grinding condition is severe one of these devices will last approximately six months before needing to be replaced. Alternately, you dentist can also have one made for you.

Finally, an ear infection can cause jaw pain. An ear infection is an easy to treat condition and, is also a painful condition especially for young children. Moist heat, ibuprofen or acetaminophen for pain and antibiotics are normally the treatment for an ear infection and jaw pain.

Neck and back pain can occur from many things, such as lying on a bad pillow, having bad posture, and a car accident. With the right treatment neck and back pain can be treated.

What are some exercises that can be done to prevent neck and back pain?

A person that sits at a desk all day at their computer can end up with a lot of neck and back problems, if they don’t have the right posture for one. Ever so often, sitting at a desk can make the neck and back ache. Some exercises that a person can do to prevent this from happening are to do some neck rolls. Slowly, roll the neck around, side to side, and up and down. Hold each position for at least 30 seconds. As for back exercises, while at the desk, bend down and touch toes. Also, another back exercise that can be done while taking a break or getting up to do some filing is to reach up high with hands in the air and bend as far back as possible. Hold the stretch for 20 seconds.

At home, the same exercises can be done, but a person can take it a little further by lying on the floor on stomach in the same position like doing a pushup. Now, lift head up off the floor and lean head back. This will stretch the back.

There are a lot of yoga classes that are available that target every body part from neck to the back. Pilates also helps with flexibility and posture as well. A person who is on a budget can opt to get some DVDs that they can do at home and still get the same benefits as a person who goes to a regular class.

What over-the-counter and prescription medications that can be taken for neck and back pain?

There are a lot of over-the-counter medications that can be taken for neck and back pain. Some are Excedrin, Aleve, Tylenol, and Bayer. Taking over-the-counter medication help minor aches and pains. For severe back pain, a prescription is needed from a doctor. Some prescription medications are antidepressants and cortisteriods.

Neck and shoulder pain can exist for many reasons. Sometimes it can be prevented, but in other situations it can’t. There are ways to relieve the pain in both the neck and shoulder.

What causes neck and shoulder pain?

Neck pain can occur from many reasons, such as bad posture, muscle strain, tumors, and joint and bone disorders. The causes for shoulder pain include, overtension, pinched nerves, and tendonitis. It is also known that a heart attack can cause pain in both the shoulder and neck.

What are some ways to prevent shoulder and neck pain?

Some ways to prevent shoulder and neck pain is to not putting too much pressure on the muscles. When a job requires doing any heavy lifting or straining, get more than one person to help. When not working, do some neck and shoulder rolls ever so often. Take yoga and pilates classes. Yoga and pilates both help in keeping the body flexible. Also, always wear a seatbelt to prevent major injuries to the neck and shoulders that could occur in a car accident.

How will a doctor diagnose neck and shoulder pain?

The doctor will use one or more of the following ways to check what type of neck and shoulder problems the patient has. Some ways a doctor can diagnose neck and shoulder problems are with X-rays, MRIs, and EMGs.

How is neck and shoulder pain treated?

Neck and shoulder pain can be treated temporary with oral medications, which can be purchased over-the-counter, such as Aleve and Tylenol. Heat and ice packs are also effective in temporary treating pain in the neck and shoulder. A cortiosteriod injection may be needed if the pain is severe.

There are many causes of neck pain. Sleeping the wrong way can cause you to wake up with a stiff neck. Waking up wake up end with your head twisted on the pillow, can cause a muscle contraction. This can easily be the cause of a cramp-like- pain in the neck area. Holding your head in one position for too long can cause neck pain. This usually occurs when curled up on a chair reading a book or stretching out on the couch watching television

How Can I Eliminate Neck Pain?

Usually neck pain will respond to a hot shower. The warmth of the water as it sprays on the neck pain area relaxes the muscle causing the pain.

What Can I Do If the Neck Pain Does not respond to Hot Water Shower?

If the muscle pain returns or has never gone away, use an analgesic rub that they sell in the drug stores. They work by the deep heat that the rub causes. This might only cause temporary relief but it’s worth a try. One other method is to use a heating pad on the area. The heat should also relax the muscle in the neck that is causing the pain.

What if Nothing Gives Relief of the Neck Pain?

Once you have tried every possible method that could have been done by yourself, and the neck pain does not subside, it is time to visit a medical doctor. The physician will most likely suggest an x-ray of the back and neck area to pinpoint the exact location causing of the pain.

What Else Could Be Causing the Neck Pain?

Neck pain that also seems to be going down the arm might be caused by a more serious medical condition. Tell your doctor all the symptoms you feel, aside from the neck pain. Is the pain going down the back? Do you feel a tingling in your fingers. Is the pain radiating down one or both arms? This allows the doctor to evaluate the situation and give a proper diagnosis.

Not all neck pain is the same type of pain. Many times pain in any area of the body can be caused by something more serious than just sleeping the wrong way. Self-diagnosing any type of pain that does not seem to be relieved or go away requires the care of a physician. Many times pain in one area, can be coming from an entirely different area of the body.

Sometimes you feel endless pressure pain in the jaws, side of the head and face that extends to back of the neck. The pain can be persistent and unbearable, especially if you try chewing or bending over. Many people have this problem and it can last for years. They try all sorts of medication and treatment available on the market and when nothing works, they give up hope. However, it is not possible to control the pressure pain of sinus by medication alone. You also have to make some changes in your life style and adopt a multi-disciplinary approach.

First of all, you should modify your diet. Focus only on eating healthy food items and avoid junk. Do little bit of research and find out which foods are capable of boosting the immune system. When you have a strong immune system, it can ward off the pressure pain of sinus. You should focus on food items that contain Vitamin E, Vitamin C and beta-carotene.

You should change your sleeping habits and try to get as much rest every day as possible. Restful sleep can help you relieve stress as it revitalizes your body. A good night’s sleep can repair tissue damages. If you are unable to get sound sleep, you should avoid taking naps after 2 pm. Do not drink alcoholic beverages or other stimulants at least 5 or 6 hours before going to bed. Moreover, regular exercise can tire you enough to give you a sound sleep. Warm showers are also known to treat insomnia and sleeplessness.

Regular exercise is the key to a healthy lifestyle. It increases your power of endurance while maintaining a good health of blood vessels, lungs and particularly your heart. Try not to keep any pets inside the house because they usually aggravate sinus related issues. Your carpets and furniture should be sprayed every now and then. Keep an air purifier inside the house because it helps filter the air from impurities. Mostly, toxic chemicals emitted by furniture and carpets can be disastrous for the pressure pain of sinus.

Ask your doctor for the proper diagnosis because only then can you use the right and safe medication. In addition to that, some people try herbal and natural methods of treatment which are also quite effective. Essential oils, aromatherapy, ancient exercises such as QiGong, homeopathy and yoga are particularly helpful.

Making these changes can help you get rid of the sinus symptoms like pressure and pain. However, it requires commitment, time and energy.

Tooth pain is pain that occurs in the tooth or teeth. It is often a dull, throbbing pain and often causes facial swelling and gum swelling.

What causes tooth pain?

Tooth pain is most often the result of a problem such as a cavity or tooth abscess. An abscessed tooth is the painful result of a cavity that has been left untreated. Occasionally tooth pain is referred pain, meaning there is a problem in another part of your body that is resulting in pain of the tooth even though there is no problem with the tooth. Sometimes people who are suffering from heart attacks or angina report tooth pain. Wisdom teeth can become impacted, meaning that there isn’t enough room for them in the mouth and they remain stuck under the gums. When this happens, the pain can be intense.

Should I see a doctor or dentist for tooth pain?

Most of the time a dentist should be seen for any type of tooth pain. If the dentist rules out any dental problems as the cause, a medical doctor should then be consulted. It’s important not to wait too long to see a dentist or doctor for any type of tooth pain because sometimes dental problems can be deadly. Abscessed teeth can actually kill people if left untreated. A dentist is best equipped for dealing with things like cavities, abscesses, gum disease, or wisdom tooth problems. All of these can result in severe tooth pain.

What are treatments for tooth pain?

There are over the counter ointments and numbing gels that you can use to treat tooth pain at home. Ibuprofen is also very useful since it is an anti inflammatory drug. If the tooth pain is severe enough to cause swelling around the mouth and face, a heating pad can help to reduce it. Dentists and doctors can prescribe stronger medicines for dealing with tooth pain. However, the pain will persist if the root of the problem isn’t taken care of. Cavities should be filled and abscessed teeth or wisdom teeth causing pain should be pulled. Otherwise, the pain will most likely continue.
