Fears: Kidney or Liver damage? thyroid concerns?
Question:
You can get your kidneys/liver tested…on a regular basis if you want. I had check-up before starting and at 6 months….everything was fine. Careful…someone will call you an anecdote… Congrats on your progress and improved health. Gotta love LC! HJ 245196145 Ding, dong the stall is dead! – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I suffered kidney damage from 2 problem pregnancies in 2 years, and on a low-fat, low-cal diet was experiancing slow deterioration. I was suffering constant, low-grade kidney pain and my specialist had told me that I’d have to live with it, and that it would be an assessment of my kidney function. By the time I’d finished Induction, my kidney pain had vanished. Within 4 months I was getting regular improvement on my protienuria test strips (similar to ketostix). At 6 months, blood tests confirmed that for the first time in 4 years my kidney function was in normal ranges. It’s now been almost 12 months, and the pain has not returned and the proteinuria tests continue to be good. HTH Aramanth 290/249/130

- Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I’ve been reading Dr. Atkins’ latest book and dabbling with the diet. While most of what he says seems logical to me, I still worry a bit about the effect of ketones, more protein, fats, etc, on my kidneys and liver. An (overweight) client of mine today said, "I tried Atkins’ diet – stay away from it! I damaged my kidneys and got the gout." Most people I’ve talked with about the diet either have had personal success or know someone who has, but few people seem to know about the long-term effects on those organs. Also, I have had hypothyroidism, then hyperthyroidism, now am recovering from radioactive iodine therapy and am hypothyroid while the endocrinologist adjusts me to the right synthroid dose. Any special concerns for me? Can someone out there address my concerns? Thanks, Bill
