Hi Barb Sounds like you’;ve found someone good, and I am very happy that he is commencing you on treatment even though you have no clear diagnosis as yet. Sometimes validating our "unwellness" and getting some treatment for symptoms is far more important than finding exactly which long name to tattoo on our forehead! Good luck sweetie Lyndal "Phyllis Luth" <PL…@kc.rr.com> wrote in message

I have already made an appt with the eye doctor. I just had my eyes examed about 3 months ago, but i called him to ask if i should come in now he said yes.
Hi Barb, It sounds like the doctor was thorough. He also seems to be keeping an open mind. He is not likely to miss anything that way. You are in good hands. The pred could make a big difference. Try to relax over the next month, and wait and see what the new labs reveal. I know that waiting is hard. Keep in touch.
Anyone during the first week have back pain around the kidney area? I just started having discomfort today.

Are you drinking enough water? Also have you had kidney problems before? (I have.) If so, it might be a good idea to have things checked by a doctor. Another problem with back pains was brought up in this NG a couple of days ago. After three weeks on the diet I found that an old back injury (high school, a slightly crushed disk) was flaring up again. According to the poster, back pains can be caused by dehydration of the spinal disks brought on by low-carbing. One recommendation was "therapeutic doses of fish oil". day) for a couple of days now and the problem already seems to be clearing up. — Bob Kanyak’s Doghouse http://kanyak.com

Response:

That’s probably dehydration. You might have dry lips as well (as I did). When I got the hydration thing right my back problems dissappeared again. Also a dodgy knee no longer needs cod liver oil to keep it in check (I cycle alot and I need that knee). I’ve only had aching kidneys once. I found that drinking as much water as I could didn;t help; it just went straight through me. What did finally work was when I reduced my caffeine intake by limiting myself to 3 cups a day max and using decaf to fill in the gaps, along with always drinking a decent amount of water just before bed and immediately after getting up in the morning. Strangely this is how my brothers have always operated (they have beer glasses of water next to their beds). Greg

Hi guys, Thanks Actually the pain went away for some reason, I think it is dehydration because I haven’t been drinking water all that much lately like I should.
Anyone during the first week have back pain around the kidney area? I just started having discomfort today.

Drink more water, stop drinking sodas (standard advice when dealing with kidney probs), have some milk thistle tea, that always makes my kidneys feels nice. Kali Blonde, fka K in Cali

Also, remember that sitting is the lousiest thing you can do for your back (according to my chiropractor). A lot of new low-carbers are spending extra hours per day in front of their computer reading this NG. Not good for the back. HG

Dear Group–Oh how I grimaced to see that any of you were experiencing flank pain. Or perhaps muscle spasms. I verified with hubby, because I really have no recollection of some specifics of my pylonephritis, and sure enough, through the blood cultures, was how they found which bacteria were bothering my innocent kidney, there were 20 specific anitibiotics of choice, they put me on the top three by IV infusions. Then another 2 weeks of antibiotics here at home, which the bottle is empty as of this day!! I am stunned at how quickly, and severly sick we can become from this type of infection. This was my first. I had no inkling of warning. We knew my SLE was surging, but the pylo took everybody by surprise. Take care of yourselves, and may each day be better for you.
I’d recommend that you get it checked out ASAP, Catherine. I am not an expert on kidney stuff but I have known folks who had significant pain in response to various kidney problems. You haven’t changed a med in the last day or two have you? I found a strange side effect (rare) from Sonata – it gave me major kidney pain but didn’t do any harm beyond that (go figure). anyway… check it out. It may be nothing. It may be not enough fluids (I get mild flank pain when I don’t get enough water) or it could be a problem developing. Yeah, *most* people don’t experience pain with kidney involvement according to the party line – but most is of course, not "all". Best wishes and good to see you post. You are with family here. hugs, *********************************** KCat – I am not a medical professional. The contents of this post are based soley on my experiences and opinions http://www.ghg.net/schwerpt/mypage.htm http://www.ghg.net/schwerpt/aslfaq20.htm ("`-”-/").___..–”"`-._ (`6_ 6 ) `-. ( ).`-.__.’`) (_Y_.)’ ._ ) `._ `. “-..-” _..`–’_..-_/ /–’_.’ ,’ (()),-” (()),’ (((.-’

Well , Im sure that everyone on here will agree that what books say and what really happens , are not always the same! I have also had problems with my kidneys over the years. You need to go to your Dr for blood tests! It may be an infection or kidney stone? All I know is that I HAVE had pain in my kidneys (even though the books say your not suppose to) Are you running a higher fever that usual? The Dr may also do an IVP if the blood work doesnt show much so he can get a better look at your kidneys (they inject dye into you and take x-rays of your kdneys) good luck! Karen

Thanks all of you:) I had it checked yesterday. Tis the lupus the doc says and increase my prednisone. Just what I needed, a pumpkin costume for new years. So much for what the books say, it hurts and if I sit so my back touches the chair it feels like I’m leaning on a little poofy pillow in that area. And it *really* hurts if the area is tapped firmly. My doc did that and I nearly decked him:) He suggested also trying to drink water as constantly as I can. That doesn’t compute to me, wouldn’t that just make the poor lil things work even harder? Actually it worked out kind of handy because he had just received the results of my last battery of tests from last week and my ANA had literally doubled from last time. Isn’t that kind of unusual? I thought most of us sort of sat at a more or less static ANA (like say between 160 and 640) apart from say a life threatening flare. I’m sooooo glad I found these groups online. How did I ever manage the fear before I found you. love, catherine Canuckian <canuck…@freeze.com> wrote in message

A doubled ANA is actually only one step different, so not as drastic as it looks! They do the test by taking a bit of your blood, diluting it and treating it to make the antibodies visible, then testing it till they can’t see the antibodies any more. They start at a 1 part in 40 concentration (1:40) then double the dilution with each step, so 1:320 is only one step up from 1:160, and 1:640 one step up from 1:320. My reading varies from 1:320 to "1:640+" (whatever that means) depending on the lab and the time; there doesn’t seem to be much relationship between that and my illness (I should add I don’t actually have a lupus diagnosis, just some of the symptoms ).
Also…ANA doesn’t correlate well with lupus severity or flares. There are a lot better indicators (for example: complements, anti-dsDNA, sed rate, CRP) Sandra

no.. not in general. The kidneys require the right balance of salts, proteins and sugars to function properly. Too little fluids can cause a build-up of these things and make the body interpret this as drought conditions therefore it starts storing water, in the skin, everywhere. Too much protein is one of these triggers (which is what usually happens in lupus) therefore you need to dilute the proteins to get things functioning normally again. There are exceptions to this rule (when the kidneys are on their last legs so to speak) but otherwise, you need to be getting water all day and preferably once or twice during the night if you awaken as I do. >apart from say a life threatening flare. I’m sooooo glad I found these >groups online. How did I ever manage the fear before I found you.

other folks have already answered this so I’ll just echo – ANA can vary tremendously over time – even from one day to the next, hence the necessity of getting it checked regularly to monitor disease activity. However, as Sandra and others remind us, ANA levels do not really indicate *severity* of the disease and at times the ANA can be low in a flare or high in a non-flare. So it’s not unusual for you to experience a doubling or more. And as Susan pointed out a doubling (320 to 640) is only one "dilution" on the ANA assay. glad you’re here too! though I wish you didn’t have to be if you know what I mean. hugs, *********************************** KCat – I am not a medical professional.

Based on your description, I believe I have experienced a similar pain, on and off for approximately 7 years. I also get the same type of pain around my spleen area. I went to my GP about it and he said something about pressure from my ribs or something. Truthfully, I didn’t really pay attention to him becuase the pain wasn’t there at the time. I went to emergency once and was stuck with a bunch of needles in my back with freezing. Needless to say, the pain went away. (They’re brilliant), but no diagnosis was found. Thank you for the reminder, I have to ask my Rheumatologist about it. I forget sometimes, because it only happens every few months. Is your pain like a gas pain? What I mean is, do you feel pressure? Canuckian <canuck…@freeze.com> wrote in message

Something we should all be aware of that I saw in another newsgroup so I am reminded to bring it up here. Phenylpropanolamine is an ingredient in many cold medicines and diet meds. It has been recalled (after literally *decades* of use) because it was discovered to cause certain health problems (what escapes me at this point). A friend of mine tried to purchase "Comtrex" and when it rang up at the cashier she was notified that they couldn’t sell it to her. The point is, that obviously some stores are not actually *removing* this recalled product from the shelves but counting on the computers to catch it as it is scanned. My suggestion is that you check any cold remedies or diet meds you have that have this drug in it. I believe it causes pulmonary problems but don’t recall exactly. If you have "Entex" or "Entex LA" do not take it – dump it in the toilet. This is commonly prescribed by doctors for sinus infections and the like and if you’re like me you tend to hang on to such things for "the next cold". There are probably other prescription meds that contain PPA but that is the only one I am aware of offhand. So… just wanted everyone to be aware of this. It was on my local news but has not been thoroughly reported IMO. best, *********************************** KCat – I am not a medical professional.

Thanks Mel, I couldn’t remember what it was that it did. Given some here are at risk already for stroke it doesn’t make sense to add to it. It is supposed to be off all shelves, the fact that some stores have not done this (this was T*rget) is disturbing to me. Also, some folks may have this in their medicine cabinet and not realize it. Of course, I took the drug many times in my 20s, as has my daughter and other members of my family, so it’s a very low risk obviously. Again, thanks for clarifying the problem. kcat

Here is the article: http://onhealth.webmd.com/conditions/briefs/wire/item%2C106890.asp I am in denial. I searched Usenet to hopefully disprove this article, and I see it’s 100% truth. I have been taking Tavist D for a few months now, and I had previously been prescribed Entex LA (both contain PPA). Both dramatically improved my breathing, helped me sleep better at night, and helped me relax more in general. No side effects, either! I will now have to find an antihistamine/decongestant combo (perhaps something with pseudoephedrine in place of the PPA) and hope it works out as well. Khendra In article <t3ckm3dgdec…@corp.supernews.com>, "Lori Hammock" <LHamm…@pop.net> wrote: – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -> I think this is really sad. Phenylpropanolamine is the ONLY thing that ever > worked on clearing my sinuses. I used it on and off since I was a child. > Now what I am going to do when my sinuses get bad, and they will?
I do hope you’re successful Khendra. You’d think with all the other meds out there (like, duh, prednisone!) that can cause major health concerns, that they would weigh priorities and prescribe it where it seems to be very helpful and let the patient take the risk (as we do with so many other meds). It does seem an over-reaction compared to something like Phen-Fen which caused *common* severe health risks rather than a rare risk. it’s a wierd world where meds are concerned.

Comtrex almost killed me 15 years ago. My preteens could take it but when I took it I started to pass out. Went to a doc in a box and they had a hissy fit. My BP was something outrageous like 280 over a 140. They were giving me all sorts of shots and had BP cuffs on both arms and both legs waiting for it to fall. Needless to say I didn’t go home for a few hours. Then it took almost 6 months for my BP to return to normal. After that I was never allowed to take any decongestant.

Question:

And of course… I had it. Thursday (almost 2 weeks ago) I started taking Sonata in an effort to get the Ambien back to previous efficacy (I wanted to get down to 5 mgs instead of 10). So this was for a "break" from the Ambien only. I was fighting what I thought was a UTI for the last 1.5 weeks (since the day after the first dose). Have taken 2 different antibiotics and macrobid with no releif. For some reason (fortuitous?) I didn’t take the Sonata Friday and Saturday nights last week but went back to Ambien. This was unfortunately at the same time I started the second antibiotic so I didn’t make the connection. Saturday and Sunday I started gradually feeling better. What was weird about this "UTI" was that I never experienced the classic "burning" I *always* get. Instead I just had a constant feeling of needing to go and significant flank pain. No fever (which one would expect with a kidney infection). Wasn’t able to sleep and oddly enough (duh) the pain was much worse at night. Anyway… started feeling better and then Sunday night decided to try the Sonata again – assuming that trying it while fighting an infection was not a "fair trial" – within an hour of taking it my bladder started spasming like mad again and 3 hours later my kidneys ached terribly again. I am now detoxing from this med – flushing lots of water down. Yes, I checked the PDR and these are rare side effects ("bladder pain, kidney pain"). They don’t say anything about *damage* so I’m hoping in a few days that all will be back to normal and I can stop taking the pyridium. Meanwhile, I’m back on Ambien (which can cause the same problem apparently and may explain why the last couple of months I have not felt quite normal in that regard already). But short of a benzo (which my docs won’t give me) I don’t know what else to do and I can’t *not* sleep. anyway… this is a rare side effect but given that we lupies have to deal with kidney stuff a lot of the time anyway I thought it would be valuable information. Sonata is a relatively innocuous drug and I am not saying "Don’t take it." I just wanted to let people know that some of these meds can masquerade with what for all the world *looks* like an infection (we assumed that the lack of bacteria in my specimen was due to the fact that I was diluting tremendously) – now I realize this wasn’t the case at all. take care, *********************************** KCat – I am not a medical professional.

I couldn’t tell you. It just came out this year. I have a ‘98 PDR now (my MILs doctor had the ‘00 version so he just *gave* me this doorstop book) but it wasn’t out in ‘98 or ‘99 to my knowledge (in the states). I’ll try to find out. As far as the water… no one else is experiencing any bad effects from it and I seem to be the only one that can smell the sulfur. I tend to have a sensitive sniffer anyway so…. But I’m drinking bottled water just the same at this time. I’m still having some kidney pain and bladder stuff but it’s better. Still, I’m a bit scared that I’ve done some damage despite the PDR (’00) not listing that as a side effect. I saw my doc yesterday at the hospital and will go in for an appt. next week to get the whole system checked out. In general I feel like I’ve slipped into a mild flare again (and just two weeks ago I was rejoicing about how good I felt). Waking in the middle of the night with severe joint pain, waking with headaches every a.m., not sleeping for sh**, etc. I guess the drug reaction and the stress of hubby being in and out of hospital (thankfully minor stuff) is taking it’s toll. I want to get back to remission ASAP yet I’m also into my "all meds suck" mode again and fighting the temptation to just stop them all, detox and try to be normal again. yeah… right… *********************************** KCat – I am not a medical professional.

Obligatory Tip- Got some cabbage pre-shredded at the market. It’s handy to – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -make your own Cole Slaw. Some of the store bought has sugar or it’s too vinegary. I like to fix mine with a few tablespoons of Hellman’s, a dollop of French’s Yellow Mustard, a pinch of Horseradish, minced celery, 2 teaspoons of cider vinegar, Sea Salt and fresh ground pepper. One added benefit of making the stuff at home is you don’t have to worry about some wiseguy at the supermarket adding any "secret" ingredients in.

Mike, Would you please post a sample of your daily menu? I am only 4 days into LC’n and am already getting burned out on the food… I am asking you because you seem to being doing so well at LC’n and share the same feelings I do about eating things such as Tofu, vegie protin, ect. So I am asking in hopes that maybe you will list something that I have not already thought of…. Any ideas you have I would greatly appreciate to help keep my taste bud sanity… Thanks! Chelly :0)

Hi Chelly, Let me start by listing what I buy at the supermarket. One thought before that though…are you following some particular regime? Drinking enough water? Following some type of plan is important and be sure to get your supplements and water intake in order. Exercise will _NOT_ hurt either! At The Market… Coconuts, red, green and yellow bell peppers, green beans, jalepenos, spaghetti squash, romaine, anise, celery, radishes, shredded cabbage, broccoli, broccoli rab, iceburg lettuce, cukes, snow peas, cauliflower, asparagus and artichokes. I’m sure I’m missing something from produce.. Meat and Fish… Smoked fish, shrimp, fish fillets, salmon steaks, ribeyes, rack of ribs, rib roast, (i like ribs) ground beef, pork loin roast, pork loin steaks, bratwursts, German and Italian sausage, (hot&sweet) cured ham, bacon, chicken, turkey, veal and Canadian bacon. I stop at the deli and get Danish Ham, Brunsweiger, swiss cheese, german bologna, salami, pepperoni, turkey breast and sliced provolone. I keep Heavy cream, sour cream, cottage cheese, and butter on hand. Half and Half for coffee. I buy almonds, brazil nuts, pecans and walnuts from the bulk bins and snack on these. Also snack on olives, pork rinds, roasted peppers in olive oil, garden salad the jar. Different kind of cheeses. Sometimes I’ll make a antipasto and have that for lunch. We usually cook on the grill. I am a certified Grill Master (4th degree) and we always have a salad with ranch dressing or I make up some nice Italian with Virgin olive oil and Balsamic vinegar. Breakfast is usually an omelet of some type…from just a slice of cheese to artichoke hearts and slivered almonds. I like to keep a ham in the fridge and slice off some for breakfast as well. I’ll have either that or bacon. When I make sausage, I make some sausage gravy as well. Lunch can be anything… A can of tuna dumped on a nice mixed salad with a heap of Hellmans and a hard boiled egg is good. When your out and about, most every place has a grilled chicken salad you can dig into too. Just tell em to hold the croutons and give you Ranch dressing. I like to eat cold cut roll-ups for lunch too. Sometimes I’ll have a bag of Pork rinds and some nuts and just skip lunch if I’m not hungry. I do like spam and sardines are a quick snack too. A hamburger siting on a big Portabella mushroom is a nice treat as is just having two burger with cheese and some hot peppers. Dinner is more involved. One dish that both I and my wife love is spaghetti squash with alfredo sauce and shrimp. I do the shrimp in butter and garlic with a little cumin and then dump it right into an Alfredo sauce that I buy in the jar. Then I put that over the top of the scooped out spaghetti squash. It’s pretty fantastic. I always add in a little fresh ground Romano and pepper. We do eat a lot of grilled meats. Kabasa is great grilled as well as brats with sauerkraut. I like to thoroughly rinse my kraut to get the vinegar taste out, then cook it up with butter and a touch of garlic. We always have salad and sometimes put cheese on the veggies. I do a 5 meat chili that’s pretty cool and I just picked up some more Knoor soups yesterday that looks like they will be around 10 carbs a serving. Enter in alt.support.diet.low-carb in the forum field and recipe in the subject field and you should get 1300 hundred or so LC recipes. If you fool with the keywords in the Power Search, you can dig up more specific recipes. Here’s my chili recipe… I’ve been whipping up Chili for many years and this is just a little variation on Texas Chili, which has no beans. The carb count should be up around 10-14 grams so it’s not carb free but if you allow yourself 20 carbs a day, it’s easy to fit this dish into your meal plan. First simmer 1.5 pounds of relatively lean ground beef for twenty minutes. Drain the fat. Dice up about 1.5 pound of sirloin tips or any cut beef you like. Dice up a pound or so ham. Dice up a pound or so pork loin. I like to dice the meat a little smaller than a sugar cube. In your Chile pot, go a couple TBL spoons of olive oil and a small diced vidalia onion. Throw in 3 TBL spoons diced garlic and let these brown for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Throw in the meat, throw in a 16 oz. can of stewed tomatoes, (no sugar added) and fill the can a little less than half with water and add that. Throw in half of a small can of tomato paste. Stir well, breaking up the bigger pieces of tomato. Dice up 3 jalepano peppers, 2 green banana peppers and one big yellow bell pepper and add to pot. Season with course salt and about 2 TBL spoons of Chile powder. Let this simmer about 30 minutes. In the meantime, gather a medium zucchini, 1/3 cup almonds, 1/4 cup heavy cream and a pile of grated sharp cheddar cheese. Quarter the zucchini, leaving the skin and slice it about 3/8 of an inch thick. After the 30 minutes are up, check the dish, you should have a nice consistency and colorful too, with the stewed tomatoes and yellow bell pepper catching your eye. Now, to get a better consistency, grind up the almonds in the blender to obtain a course, flour like state and add that, along with the heavy cream and stir in. It really thickens up the Chile and gives it a nice look. Lastly, toss in the zucchini and let simmer an additional 15 to twenty minutes only. You want the zucchini to stay fairly crisp, as it adds to the texture of the dish. Serve in a large Chile bowl with the grated sharp cheddar on top. What makes this dish great is using the almonds and cream to thicken the Chile and make sure you use fresh jalepano peppers. The ingredients can be as varied as you like. Add sausage or okra. It’s nice to have a little variety and this dish certainly is different than the regular low carb fare I’ve been eating. Remember, you can use up most of your carb count with this dish, so plan accordingly. It is worth it though. PS- Next time I make this chili, I’m going to use some of the grated cauliflower that katypillar suggested. I’ve already made some hot and sour soup with it and it’s great. Hope this helps Ya!

I struck paydirt today in the Harris Teeter. While perusing the soup mixes, I discovered Kikkoman Hot and Sour Soup Mix. You boil the contents with water and add one well beaten egg and serve. Carbs per serving- 6 I was in heaven before I even brought it home and after eating it, I can tell you I’ll be back there tomorrow to buy a dozen. Taking the absolutely brilliant suggestion of grated Cauliflower for a rice substitute, offered by a forgotten poster, I added some of that, as well as a handful of bean sprouts and some grilled chicken breast. A little extra soy sauce, red cumin pepper and salt and I truly enjoyed this meal. Here’s the link for Kikkoman http://www.kikkoman.com/ Next up is the new Quaker Crispy Minis. They are mini rice cakes. Mine are Sour Cream and Onion. About 10 of them are 12 carbs. This will require _much_ will power to just eat ten for any particular day. I stowed mine in a plastic food container and put em on the top shelf. When I eat some, I grab a bowl and then go to the container and put my ten in the bowl and then close them back up and put them away. I don’t dare eat those from the bag. These are so new, there’s no mention of them on the web site yet. http://www.quakeroats.com/ My third pick today was Kashi Puffed Cereal. It’s a puffed rice plus whole grain cereal that is 13 carbs per 1 cup serving. Add a half cup whole milk and we’re up to 20 carbs and maybe flirting with disaster. I’ll have to make this "cereal day" a special day and go 0 carbs or as close to it for the rest of the day but I have to say I’m excited about added in some cereal and milk for breakfast! I could just see it now, The bacon and eggs _AND_ the beautiful little bowl of milk and cereal!
as I posted earlier this week, after trying stillman last week I decided to have a relaxed 100g carbs or less (per day) weekend, and one of my picks was dominos thin n’ crispy crust pizza with pepperoni and black olives. I went to the web site and was gratified to see that a serving for a medium pizza is 1/4 of the whole thing and is only about 33 g. Which makes the whole pizza (this was for cheese only) around 130g. I only had my 1/4 serving of course, but cool! I am posting this link below so that those of you who are on maintenance or something more relaxed than atkins/induction can check it out… http://www.dominos.com/Menu/nutrition.cfm?Title=Crunchy%20Thin%20Crust sonya SO – what a reason to reach goal and get on maintenance, pizza to look forward to! – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I struck paydirt today in the Harris Teeter. Here’s the link to the Kashi site. http://www.kashi.com/ — Atkins- 4/28/00 **Not even ONE cheat** 280 242 215 36 Years Old 5′10" Large Frame Doing it right, taking no prisoners and offering no apologies!

Thanks Linda but I think I’ll pass. I don’t like flax or tofu and this stuff sounds eerily similar. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – TVP is textured vegetable protein, Mike. It’s made from soybeans. — Linda 170/152/125 JOIN US on IRC’s Undernet #lowcarb Channel!
- Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – as I posted earlier this week, after trying stillman last week I decided to have a relaxed 100g carbs or less (per day) weekend, and one of my picks was dominos thin n’ crispy crust pizza with pepperoni and black olives.

Ya know, when I was driving around earlier this week I was wondering bout thin crust pizza with extra cheese and how many carbs it may have! Thanks for the Maintenance Disclaimer and good info! The closest I’ve been to Pizza was peeling the top of a extra cheese, pepperoni and back olives at Chuck E Cheese. We took the kids there and that pizza was calling my name the whole time so I did the next best thing and just ate the toppings. Perfectly legal and pretty satisfying. I’d like to hear more of what people on maintenance eat. I’m beginning to think that the rumor of your Kidneys failing soon after you reach goal might be true.

Mike, Are you making a serious statement about the kidney thing, or are you being sarcastic? I know some people in the NG have complained about kidney pain during the diet, and I know you have said many times that you are doing it 100%, so Are you having any adverse effects at all? If you’re serious, please tell me why you think the rumor might be true. Tuffy
