That’s not "shaked lime", it’s "slaked lime".  It is lime, i.e. CaO, which has been treated with hot water (90-100C) to form calcium hydroxide, i.e. Ca(OH)2. I’ve got a theory about pain that might apply to you.  A couple years ago I passed a kidney stone caused by eating too much spinach.  I was lucky the kidney stone was so small, it was uncomfortable but the pain was never too bad. Up until that time, I had been aware that I sufered from lower back pain, but I never paid much attention to it and wasn’t really bothered by it. But after passing the stone, I became much more aware of pain from the lower back area.  I eventually had to change my bed to eliminate as much back pain as I could.  That, plus paying more attention to my posture has pretty much eliminated the pain. I think what happened is that the kidney pain sensitized my brain to pain coming from that area of the body.  Kidney pain and lower back pain feel almost the same, except that kidney pain is constant and lower back pain changes as you adjust your posture. You’ve had your tedonitis/bursitis so long (a year) that I would think the organic cause of pain should have healed.  (Maybe not, I’m not a doctor.)  Maybe your earlier experience sensitized your brain to pain coming from your pelvis/thigh regions?  If so, perhaps hypnosis would be an effective way to manage your pain.

I injured myself overexercising about a year ago.  My hips pelvis and legs are   very sore.  An MD diagnosed bursitis and tendonitis., Anti inflammatories  didn’t help.Now I’m trying natural alternatives like the alexander technique,  acupunture, hot tub, gentele exercise, changing my diet and taking anti  oxidants.  I read in a recently published book byMichael T. Murray that  Curcumin is an effective natural, non toxic alternative to cortisone.  He  suggests mixing tumeric with shaked lime and aplplying the mixture as a poultice.  I was wondering how to go about making this mixture. What is  shaked lime?  What should the proportions be?  Any other comments or  suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

You are looking for SLAKED lime. I believe this is what they make cement with. You can therefore buy it from any building supply, but be careful–it is caustic. BTW, it will turn your legs bright yellow. Why don’t you use Arnica 200, available from health food stores as Arnica 30, first. It might relieve better. Or try some Tiger’s Balm, which operates on the same herbal concept as Cucurmin. I’ll give one more remedy: Golden milk. Dry-fry a teaspoon of tumeric in a pan until brownish yellow, reduce heat and add a cup of milk. Add honey to taste, drink warm. You will be better off utilizing that hum as a mantra. I was trying to condense my advice and accomodate someone who might not understand homeopathy. Occasionally, I watch my finches peck each other. In this conference, it is a daily experience.

I’ve had bad neck pain off and on for a few years, and finally with my second MRI the Neurosurgeon identifed a herniated disc at C4-C5. It isn’t ruptured, but is putting pressure on the spinal cord. As I won’t do surgery unless absolutely necessary (btw, the doc agrees, and couldn’t guarentee success), he put me on prescription anti-inflamatories – Naprosyn, Voltaren, Lodine, mega-dose Motrin, and others. They were not very effective. I’ve tried a bunch of therapies in-between which I won’t get into now, but have been getting some good results with herbal therapy. I currently take a tincture (liquid – alcohol based) of Tumeric 3x a day, as well as a combo tincture of St. John’s Wart and Skullcap 3x a day. This anti-inflamatory/anti-nerve pain combination works fairly well.  You may also want to try White Willow Bark and Devil’s Claw as some other herbal anit-inflamatories. As always, you should consult with your medical/herbal specialist for recommendations. While I’m on the subject, if anyone else has any suggestions on this type of nerve pain/inflamation – herniated disc treatments, I’d be interested. Cheers, David Gallagher
