Question:

And of course… I had it. Thursday (almost 2 weeks ago) I started taking Sonata in an effort to get the Ambien back to previous efficacy (I wanted to get down to 5 mgs instead of 10).  So this was for a "break" from the Ambien only. I was fighting what I thought was  a UTI for the last 1.5 weeks (since the day after the first dose).  Have taken 2 different antibiotics and macrobid with no releif.  For some reason (fortuitous?) I didn’t take the Sonata Friday and Saturday nights last week but went back to Ambien.  This was unfortunately at the same time I started the second antibiotic so I didn’t make the connection.  Saturday and Sunday I started gradually feeling better.  What was weird about this "UTI" was that I never experienced the classic "burning" I *always* get. Instead I just had a constant feeling of needing to go and significant flank pain.  No fever (which one would expect with a kidney infection).  Wasn’t able to sleep and oddly enough (duh) the pain was much worse at night.  Anyway… started feeling better and then Sunday night decided to try the Sonata again – assuming that trying it while fighting an infection was not a "fair trial" – within an hour of taking it my bladder started spasming like mad again and 3 hours later my kidneys ached terribly again.  I am now detoxing from this med – flushing lots of water down.  Yes, I checked the PDR and these are rare side effects ("bladder pain, kidney pain").  They don’t say anything about *damage* so I’m hoping in a few days that all will be back to normal and I can stop taking the pyridium.  Meanwhile, I’m back on Ambien (which can cause the same problem apparently and may explain why the last couple of months I have not felt quite normal in that regard already).  But short of a benzo (which my docs won’t give me) I don’t know what else to do and I can’t *not* sleep. anyway… this is a rare side effect but given that we lupies have to deal with kidney stuff a lot of the time anyway I thought it would be valuable information.  Sonata is a relatively innocuous drug and I am not saying "Don’t take it."  I just wanted to let people know that some of these meds can masquerade with what for all the world *looks* like an infection (we assumed that the lack of bacteria in my specimen was due to the fact that I was diluting tremendously) – now I realize this wasn’t the case at all. take care, *********************************** KCat – I am not a medical professional.  The contents of this post are based soley on my experiences and opinions http://www.ghg.net/schwerpt/mypage.htm http://www.ghg.net/schwerpt/aslfaq20.htm   ("`-”-/").___..–”"`-._   (`6_ 6  )   `-.  (     ).`-.__.’`)    (_Y_.)’  ._   )  `._ `. “-..-”   _..`–’_..-_/  /–’_.’ ,’ (()),-”  (()),’    (((.-’

I couldn’t tell you.  It just came out this year.  I have a ‘98 PDR now (my MILs doctor had the ‘00 version so he just *gave* me this doorstop book)  but it wasn’t out in ‘98 or ‘99 to my knowledge (in the states).  I’ll try to find out. As far as the water… no one else is experiencing any bad effects from it and I seem to be the only one that can smell the sulfur.  I tend to have a sensitive sniffer anyway so….   But I’m drinking bottled water just the same at this time.  I’m still having some kidney pain and bladder stuff but it’s better.  Still, I’m a bit scared that I’ve done some damage despite the PDR (’00) not listing that as a side effect.  I saw my doc yesterday at the hospital and will go in for an appt. next week to get the whole system checked out. In general I feel like I’ve slipped into a mild flare again (and just two weeks ago I was rejoicing about how good I felt).  Waking in the middle of the night with severe joint pain, waking with headaches every a.m., not sleeping for sh**, etc.  I guess the drug reaction and the stress of hubby being in and out of hospital (thankfully minor stuff) is taking it’s toll.  I want to get back to remission ASAP yet I’m also into my "all meds suck" mode again and fighting the temptation to just stop them all, detox and try to be normal again. yeah… right… *********************************** KCat – I am not a medical professional.
