Leg pain is usually caused by blockage or narrowing of arteries that take blood to the leg muscles. This condition is called atherosclerosis. Over time, calcium and cholesterol tend to get accumulated inside these arteries and that usually causes this condition. Diabetic patients and smokers have higher risk of this condition due to the presence of high level of cholesterol in the blood.
When we say blockage of the arteries, it usually means that the blood flow to the muscles reduces. There are medications and other treatments that help people relieve this type of pain. However, for most of the people, these treatments are not quite effective because they often show many side effects. Research has showed that neurostimulation and intrathecal drug delivery bring positive results in relieving leg pain and lets people improve the performance of legs while performing everyday activities.
If this type of medication is not appropriate for your type of pain or if medication is insufficient, you might be advised by our doctor to correct the narrowing of the artery. There are medical procedures and operations that help correct this problem of arteries. Bypass grafting and balloon angioplasty are the most common procedures for patients of leg pain. The latter is what we usually know as stents.
As a part of your treatment, you are advised to practice running on frequent basis. You have to take it easy by taking short steps that do not demand much stretching of the leg muscles. Try reversing directions so the entire muscle gets a chance to activate itself. Try to search a flat surface you could run on.
One of the treatments prescribed by doctors is to use insoles that fit in the shoes and help you walk more comfortably. Insoles are designed for improving shock absorption and basically help your legs take a more comfortable position while walking. For children with tighter calves are advised stretching exercises. Children usually show quicker improvements in these symptoms. They are capable of reducing pain quickly and have more tolerance towards exercise. However, not all the children find complete cures.
For reducing the soreness of muscles, you should try physical therapy and exercises. You might not be able to do aerobics exercises but do try more exercises that target leg muscles.  Persistent leg pain can be very frustrating and can cause consequent reduced quality of life. It is essential that you remain active and maintain a healthy lifestyle for reducing the impact of any kind of pain.
