A: Sciatica is a term used to define the symptoms of pain and tingling in the legs and numbness or weakness traveling from the lower all the way down the back of the leg where the large sciatic nerve is. Sciatica is not a medical diagnosis or medical disorder; it is actually just a symptom of when the nerve roots which make up the sciatic nerve or compressed or irritated. It usually occurs most frequently between people age 30 to 50. It is typically developed over general wear and tear and not from a particular event or injury. Clinically, sciatica is called radiculopathy, meaning that a disc has moved from its original placement in the vertebral column and putting pressure on the radicular nerve.

The pain of sciatica on occasion can be very intense and debilitating. Typically, however, the pain is bearable, irritating, and inconsistent. When the pain is this mild, it is usually caused by some inflammation and can heal anytime between two weeks to a couple months. Because the spinal cord is not located in the lower back where sciatica occurs, it does not impose the danger of paralysis as some nerve conditions in the back do. If progressive weakness in the leg continues for a prolonged period of time or there is any bladder or bowel incontinence or dysfunction, it is important to seek medical help.

When sciatica becomes more severe it is necessary to get medical treatment. Because sciatica nerve pain is linked to a combination of inflammation and pressure onto the nerve root, its treatment focuses on relieving these conditions. There are two common treatments to heal sciatica and relieve the pain completely. If surgery isn’t an option there is a combination of treatments and alternative non-medical treatments to relieve the pain. They typically have a combination of back exercises and stretching. If done correctly, these exercises should prevent reoccurrence of sciatica symptoms. If the condition is severe enough, surgery may be the only option. Microdiscectomy, or lumbar lamienctomy and discectomy, extracts a part of the disc that is causing inflammation on the nerve root. These surgery’s relieve any inflammation and pressure that cannot be treated with non-medical treatments.

Fibromyalgia is a condition that causes muscle pain and fatigue. Suffers also tend to have tender points on the body which are places on the neck, shoulders, arms/legs, hips and back. These points hurt when pressure is applied to them. Other symptoms sufferers have are trouble sleeping, morning stiffness, memory problems (fibro fog), tingling or numbness in the hands or feet, and painful menstrual periods. The symptoms are often treated with non-steroidal anti-inflammatories or narcotics. You can try some natural approaches first or in addition to the pain medication though.

Some of the first things you should do to try and improve your fibromyalgia pain is stop smoking, stop drinking alcohol, avoid spicy and fried food, avoid caffeine and sugar and lastly avoid taking naps or staying up late at night. Moving even if it hurts helps the pain in the long run and exercise certainly will not do you any damage. It can actually significantly control fibromyalgia pain. Try taking walks and working up to 20 minutes three times a week or so.

Aquatic exercise is also helpful though it should be done in warm water if at all possible. If not try and find a hot tub you can use as the heat soothes the pain also. If you do not have a hot tub or access to one try taking a long soak in a hot bathtub. You can do some gentle stretches while you are in there for increased pain relief.

Following a healthy diet also helps fibromyalgia. Eat a diet high in vegetable juices and soups, coconut milk and water, spices such as cumin, coriander, fennel and turmeric, cooked vegetables and green salad. Make sure to drink plenty of water to flush any toxins out of your body. Avoid foods that are fried and too spicy. Avoid tea, coffee, alcohol, and white sugar.

Practicing relaxation techniques will also help you ease your mental tensions like anxiety, fear and stress and thus reduce your pain. Deep breathing is important to stress reduction also.

Menthol and camphor are in many over the counter backache medications and are helpful in easing the muscle tightness of fibromyalgia. Garlic is great for detoxification and to boost your immune systems functioning.

Lastly, try drinking some ginger tea which is a good alternative to aspirin and relieves aches and pains. It will also help you relax and it is documented that fibromyalgia is worsened when you are under stress, anxiety or have mental fatigue.

Joint pain can affect one or more joints of the body. The usual joint pain conditions common among people are Arthritis, Bursitis and muscle pain. Inflammation and stiffness of joints can become very torturous and you need constant relief for this type of pain. Join pain is also known as Arthralgia.
There are many reasons behind joint pain. Often injuries and underlying conditions can cause these problems. Nonetheless, whatever the cause is, you definitely need a treatment for it because persistent pain is quite annoying.
Rheumatoid arthritis which is an autoimmune disorder causes pain and stiffness in the joints. Osteoarthritis refers to deterioration of cartilage around the joint area and sudden growth of bones. This problem is quite common among adults of 45 or more. It causes severe joint pain.
Similarly, the pain could be due to Bursitis which refers to inflammation of the bursae.Basically, the bone areas are covered with cushion and pad like sacs that are filled fluid. These sacs are known as bursae and they allow tendons and muscles to move around over the bone with full freedom.
As mentioned above, the most common causes of joint pain are autoimmune diseases like lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, bursitis, gout (particularly in the big toe), chondromalacia patellae. There are also many infectious diseases that can cause joint pain. For instance, Hepatitis, Influenza, Epstein-Barr viral syndrome, measles, lyme disease, mumps, rheumatic fever, parvovirus, rubella and chicken pox.
In addition to the causes mentioned above, injuries and fractures are also major factors. Osteoarthritis, Septic arthritis, osteomyelitis, over exertion, sprains and strains, tendinitis are some of the many injuries related issues that can give you pain in the joints area.
Your doctor might advise you physical therapy and continuous medication. Apart from that, you should rest and exercise on regular basis. It is very important to give some sort of activity to your muscles and you can do that through frequent stretching exercises. In addition to that, massages and warm baths are also therapeutic techniques for relieving joint pain.
If the pain is too severe and is accompanied by swelling as well, perhaps anti-inflammatory medicines should help a little. You can consult the physician or health care provider. If you get a fever that is not exactly associated with symptoms of flu, you should call your doctor because it could be dangerous. Moreover, if the joint pain lasts for more than 3-4 days and is too severe, you should contact a physician in this case too.

There are many forms of joint pain relief, which include topicals, supplements, and exercises. When taking anything for joint pain relief, it is important to consult with a doctor first.

What are some natural ways to get joint pain relief?

Diet and exercise is important when dealing with joint pain relief. Eating healthy and maintaining an exercise routine will keep the joints feeling good. While eating a healthy diet and exercising, taking supplements will help the body also. In order for joints to work properly, they need the right vitamins and minerals. Also, drinking green tea helps to relieve joint pain.

Massaging the affected area is helpful also. Exercise is very important. A simple exercise routine that will relieve joint pain is walking. The joints will become looser. Also, joining a yoga class will help the joints out tremendously.

What over-the-counter medications are available for joint pain relief?

There are many over-the-counter medications that offer relief for joint pain. Some oral medications that can be purchased over-the-counter are Tylenol, Excedrin, Aleve, and Bayer. Heating and ice packs are beneficial for relieving joint pain. Topicals are also helpful. They are like heating and ice packs, but creams instead.

What supplements are good for joint pain relief?

Flax seed oil, which is rich in omega-3 is an all-natural supplement that is good for joint pain relief. Glucosamine, Chondroitin, and MSM are also good supplements to take. Most of these supplements are in powder form. Flax seed oil comes in a liquid and a soft gel.

What exercises can be done to relieve joint pain?

Besides yoga and walking, there are a number of exercises that can be done at home. Stretching all of the muscles daily will keep the body from getting stiff. When at work, it is important to keep moving around. This can become complicated for someone who works at a desk eight hours a day. Get up ever so often and walk around. Take the stairs instead of the elevator. Also, while at the desk, stretch. Stretch the arms out and do neck and shoulder rolls. The most important thing to do when working at a desk is to have good posture. Bad posture can create many problems.

There are many factors that can be related to leg joint pain. The most common cause is arthritis, which is a condition that causes excessive joint pain to the sufferer. Apart from that, the pain can also result from a physical injury. A leg sprain is another cause of this condition, though it is not a very serious case of leg joint pain.

You experience leg joint pain when there is swelling in the body cells. This swelling is commonly filled with a fluid that is called bursa. Bursa is a soft cushion-like tissue that comes between the bones. It is responsible for steady movement of muscles as well as bones.

In some cases, another disease or disorder can become the cause of leg pain. For instance, sometimes influenza and gout can cause excessive pain. If you think the pain is only due to a physical injury, you should get the treatment by a physical therapist along with frequent massages by a professional masseur. However, if the problem is deep rooted, then you have to seek medical attention and consult the doctor for your specific situation.

Massages and warm baths are very helpful all kinds of joint pain, but they are particularly relaxing when it comes to leg joint pain. In addition to this, doctors often prescribe special rugs that are made to treat patients suffering from joint problems. These rugs include anti inflammatory and sprain drugs along with non steroidal drugs. However, these are not advisable for people suffering from liver or kidney problems. Moreover, you should avoid them if you have any kind of digestive disorders because they can aggravate your condition. If the injury is not too severe, the problem will probably go away on its own.

Another common cause of leg pain is pregnancy. During the delivery episode, the soft tissues of your body can get disturbed, giving rise to the pain. However, if you exercise regularly and take adequate rest daily, the pain will go away naturally without the need for any medication.

If you are into rough sports and you’re often exposed to physical injuries, there is a good chance your pain is caused by an injury. These physical traumas usually do not need medical help as they heal naturally. However, if the problem is worse than expected and there is a lot of pain associated with the injury, then you must see a doctor for prescription ointments and medications.

Leg muscle pain or leg cramps are experienced by many people on a daily basis. When the muscles in your leg produce uncontrolled movements, you experience cramps. Expansion or contraction of the muscle can be very painful and unbearable at times.

Causes:

Alcoholism, dehydration, excessive physical exercise, kidney failure, metabolic problems and pregnancy are all common causes behind such a condition. Leg muscle pain is also brought on by certain medications used by GERD patients. Muscles can become fatigued due to excessive use and cause pain. Low nutrient count in your body can also be a leading cause. Minerals like calcium, magnesium, potassium or sodium should be present in considerable amounts in your blood. A strained muscle can also be very painful. Pain can also be experienced if the leg is not getting enough oxygen.

Symptoms:

The problematic muscle becomes firm or tender. It also bulges out a little. Moreover, the person is not able to use the leg with the muscle cramp. The leg stays sore and swollen even after the pain has subsided.

Diagnosis:

The only way to make sure a muscle cramp is present is to check the area for a bulge. It may be swollen as well. The best time for this is when the person is feeling the pain. In this way, the doctor or whoever is nearby can know that there is a problem.

Treatment:

Stretching and flexing exercises can help relieve the leg muscle pain. You can also gently massage the affected area. Heating pads can be applied. Fluids should be taken to end the pain if it was caused by extensive physical activity. Medication is not usually prescribed for such pains because it is not needed in most cases. If the problem is linked with an underlying condition, then the pain can only be cured by addressing the actual cause.

Prevention:

When you exercise or perform any kind of rigorous physical activity, make sure to hydrate before and after you are done with it. Warm up before you start and cool down slowly when you finish. Stretching sessions can especially help avoid leg muscle pain. Take vitamins and other supplements to keep this pain away during pregnancy. Vitamin E can be taken by any one to get rid of this pain.

Concerns in Old Age:

If you are old, you might want to devise a complete plan to stay fit and pain-free. Intake of fluids at regular intervals along with magnesium and sodium supplements is necessary.

Pain seems to become more prevalent in our lives the older we become, but even our young people seem to be suffering from pain as well. It is common to have muscle pain any time of day, but often will be more persistent at night. Determining the cause of your muscle pain will make it easier to decide on the treatment.

If your muscles are sore from physical activity you may want to ice them. Putting heat on sore muscles is good but start with the ice. Alternating between the two should give you some relief. Try ten minutes of ice, five minute break than ten minutes of heat. A gentle massage may help as well, but the quickest way to battle sore muscles is to keep them stretched out. By continually stretching through the day after vigorous exercise, you keep the muscles warm and limber. You will reduce the severity of the stiff and sore feeling you normally would have gotten.

If the pain you are experiencing is similar to a muscle cramp, or “Charley Horse” as they are often called, it is likely you are not getting enough calcium. By getting more calcium into your system you will be giving your muscles and bones something to grow on, thus eliminating much of your muscle pain. This is a long term solution. For immediate relief you can apply a warm water bottle and gently try to stretch out the muscle with the cramp. If this increases the cramp, stop and gently massage the area. These types of pains usually come and go quickly. Try to get comfortable and work gently on the area in pain.

Another common muscle pain is the very general leg ache. Children seem to suffer from these regularly at night. This is also a common sign of low calcium absorption. Liquid calcium may more effectively be used by your body. For a quick fix a warm bath will ease the ache. If the pain comes in the middle of the night you may not want to take a bath, so using a warm water bottle or heating pad will work as well. Often in adults their legs ache but the distress is not from the leg but back or hip fatigue. Try placing the heating pad under your hips or along your back to loosen up the muscles and see if this gives relief to your legs. You can also apply a hot/cold cream that will relax the muscle. Check for warnings before using these on children.

Stress and common ailments can become the cause of chronic muscle pain. It could be too severe and sometimes leaves you incapable of even standing and carrying out the everyday activities. A human body has many muscles and any condition can trigger the pain in these muscles. The chief reason is the sluggish lifestyle we have adopted in today’s world where we spend most of our day sitting in front of the computer desks.
The reason behind muscular pain is the accumulation of lactic acid. Some medical issues and disorders can also cause the pain. Muscular pain itself is a symptom of the common disease called fibromyalgia. This disease can take place on the entire body but usually begins from the neck and shoulders region. From here, it spreads to other parts of the body. Its symptoms also include stiffness of muscles, heartburn and hypersensitivity. Your everyday activities are severely distracted by poor concentration, continuous tiredness, unbalanced sleep cycle, neck pain, headaches, muscle spasms, anxiety, depression, stiffness when you wake up and dry mouth.
Apart from the medical advice, you should also explore some food groups because that should help you deal with the muscle pain and regain the lost tone and health.
You should start eating foods that are richer in magnesium. These food items can keep the muscles in a good shape. You can find magnesium in asparagus, lettuce, dried fruits, brewer’s yeast, wheat germ and many seeds. In addition to that, consuming plants is always the best idea. Parsley and nettle are quite rich in silicon which makes perfect sense to have such a positive effect on negating muscular pain.
Some fruits and vegetables contain malic acid. Grapes, quinces and cherries contain this acid in abundance and it fights off muscular spasms effectively. We all know how important calcium and protein are. Your diet should always contain dairy products such as yogurt, milk and cheese. Protein should be derived from meat that is also rich in iron, fat and iodine. Furthermore, Vitamin C and Vitamin E are highly recommended for warding off muscle related problems. Citrus fruits, strawberries, cherries and plums are of great importance because they assist preserve muscle strength and prevent degeneration. For consuming more Vitamin E, perhaps you should eat more nuts, fish oil and seeds. Hazelnuts in particular are quite popular for vitamin E.
It is always recommended to make exercise an important part of your everyday life. It restores the mass of the muscle. Massages and warm baths are also recommended for muscular pain sufferers.

Nerve pain is usually caused when your joint bones or cartilage either pinch a nerve or exert too much pressure on certain nerves. Sometimes the passageway between bones, where nerves are often located, is too narrow. This condition is called stenosis and it is the major cause of conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome and spinal stenosis. Arthritis and tendonitis can cause nerve pain as can strained muscles. Consequently, most nerve pain is best treated by finding a remedy for your underlying cause of the pain. Fortunately, treatments are pretty standard for both the conditions and nerve pain.

The first thing you must do to start recovering from nerve pain is rest. Stop all physical activity and workouts as well. While you are taking it easy, you should consider wearing a joint brace or device that immobilizes the area in which you have nerve pain. This can help alleviate both inflammation and pain. Secondly, take a couple ibuprofen or naproxen every 4-6 hours. These anti-inflammatory medications help reduce inflammation and pain by limiting the effects of Cox-2 enzymes on prostaglandins (body chemicals). This is the body’s natural response to the irritation of a nerve. You should also ice the area where you have nerve pain. Ice will keep blood and lymph fluid to a minimum as they can exacerbate any inflammation and swelling during the early stages of nerve pain. Once the initial swelling and inflammation are reduced, you can use heat to increase the flow of blood to your nerves and soft tissues. The blood carries oxygen and nutrients (i.e. vitamins A & C) which are essential for healing nerve pain.

When your inflammation and pain are somewhat under control, gently massage your nerve. Massage can help relax nerve endings and diminish pain. You should also start doing some basic stretching exercises for muscles surrounding the nerve. Stretch the joint, tendon or muscle in one direction and hold that position for about a half minute. Stretch in the other direction and do the same thing. It also helps to build adjacent muscle groups as these additional muscles will add stability to the joint and relieve nerve pressure. Do massage and stretching exercises daily. Continue to do all of these treatments consistently and you will notice a marked improvement in your nerve pain. Over time, your nerve pain will disappear. Most importantly, do not get discouraged.

I have lived with fibromyalgia pain for the past thirteen years. Even though I wasn’t formally diagnosed with this condition until 2002, the painful symptoms began in 1996. There are several symptoms to determine whether or not one has fibromyalgia.

Prior to my diagnosis, the symptoms included pain in my upper shoulders, neck, feet and fingers. After complaining to my primary care physician about having this pain for a few months, blood tests and x-rays were conducted, as well as an over-the-counter medication. When those things did not work to relieve the painful symptoms, he referred me to a rheumatologist to check for lupus, arthritis or other possible rheumatic diseases. It was a relief to finally have a name to the pain I was experiencing, but at that time, there didn’t seem to be many who had fibromyalgia, let alone even heard of it, which made me feel as if this condition wasn’t real.

After the diagnosis, I did some research to learn how I may have obtained this condition. I read that fibromyalgia pain can occur at any time and may have been sparked because of a previous injury. In 1993, I sprained my neck when I was thrown against a wall while breaking up a fight. Then in 1996, I had foot pain primarily in the balls of my feet that would not go away. My primary care physician at that time first advised foot exercises and ibuprofen. When I told him neither of those remedies were working, he sent me to an orthopedic doctor, who prescribed shoe orthotic inserts, however, the foot pain did not go away or abate with the use of the orthotics, exercise or over-the counter medication. There hasn’t been a day since February of 1996 that my feet have not hurt, and the pain isn’t less painful whether I wear flats, gym shoes or other comfortable shoes.

It is now 2009 and the symptoms I have at the moment include pain in my upper back, left lower back, upper arms, fingers, calves, neck, shoulders and on various parts of my body where clothes touch my skin. For instance, sometimes the pants I wear causes pain in my upper thighs or a certain shirt will aggravate the pain I feel in my upper arms. Lastly, not being able to fall asleep and stay asleep is another symptom that occurs when one has fibromyalgia.
