Pain is defined as a somatic sensation of acute discomfort. As we all know, pain can be severe or mild. Various pain relievers can be prescribed, depending on the level of pain and the area in which the pain is located. There are several different types of pain relievers, and each treat a different level of discomfort. Pain relievers come in several categories, but most notable are over-the-counter pain relievers and prescription pain relievers.

Over-the counter or OTC pain relievers are great for many different types of acute to mild pain. They are also convenient because you can buy them from any supermarket or drug store. OTC pain relievers include acetaminophen, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, or NSAIDS, and corticosteroids. Acetaminophen is a great drug for acute to mild pain such as headaches, muscle aches, and stiffness, and fever reduction. Common drugs including acetaminophen are Tylenol, Thera-flu, and store-brain pain relievers. NSAIDS are also great fever reducers, but they also reduce swelling and inflammation. Common NSAID drugs are aspirin, aleve, ibuprofen, and naproxen. Corticosteroids are topical creams or sprays that reduce arthritis pain and muscle pain. Some corticosteroids are Ben-Gay and Icy Hot.

Prescription pain relievers are a little harder to get. You have to make an appointment with a doctor and that doctor has to prescribe these medications to you. Prescription pain relievers are harder to get because they are more potent and sometimes are addicting. Prescription pain relievers include anticonvulsants, antidepressants, corticosteroids, and opioids. Anticonvulsants are anti-seizure medications. They are also great pain reliever medications for those who do not have seizures. Common anticonvulsant medications are Lyrica, Neurontin, and Topamax. Antidepressant medications are used to treat depression and pain. Antidepressants are great for treat migraines, menstrual pain, and mood disorders. There are several types of antidepressants:
Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs)- Prozac and Zoloft
Serotonin Norepinephrine Reuptake Inhibitors (SNRIs)- Cymbalta
Norepinephrine Reuptake Inhibitors (NRIs)- Vivalan
Norepinephrine Dopamine Reuptake Inhibitors (NDRIs)- Wellbutrin
Tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs)-Elavil
Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitor (MAOIs)-Emsam and Nardil
Corticosteroids can also be prescribed. Prescription corticosteroids treat the same problems as the OTC corticosteroids, but they also treat allergies, asthma, and itching. Prescription corticosteroids include Deltasone, Hydeltrasol, and Solu-Medrol. Opioids are pain medications that are narcotic. They are used to treat mild pain and are typically used after a surgery. Opioids can be natural, synthetic, or semi-synthetic. Natural opioids are created from the resin of the poppy seed. Natural opioids include morphine, codeine, and thebaine. Synthetic opioids include fentanyl, methadone, and tramadol. Semi-synthetic opioids are created from the natural opioids and include hydrocodone, oxycodone, and benzylmorphine. Opioids can be addictive if they are taken for too long of a time. For this reason physicians usually only prescribe them for a short time.

There are several types of pain medications to choose from. If the pain is mild, an over-the-counter pain reliever will probably suffice. If the pain is more severe, a prescription pain reliever may be needed. Whatever kind of pain it is, there is a medication for it.

Norco is an excellent pain reliever that should be carefully monitored because it could become addictive due to the active ingredient hydrocodone which contains derivatives from the narcotic opiates of cocaine and thebaine. It is prescribed for moderate to severe pain. Norco also contains another common pain reliever, acetaminophen. Acetaminophen actually increases the effects of hydrocodone. There may be side effects including liver damage or death from an overdose.

Norco is just one brand name that this product is sold under. Other familiar brand names of the same medicine include Vicodin and Lortab. This medicine does not go well with alcohol because of its connection with liver disease. Pregnant women or those who may become pregnant while taking Norco should not take this drug. It is not to be used if a woman is breast feeding because it can pass to the baby through breast milk. A baby could show withdrawal symptoms if exposed to Norco or it may cause breathing problem or addiction.

Adults should not exceed a maximum amount of 4000 mg of acetaminophen daily. The usual mixed hydrocodone acetaminophen tablets have about 750 mg each. The doctor’s orders should be followed expressly and this drug should be taken only by the person to whom it is prescribed. While taking Norco be diligent to count the tablets remaining so you are positive no one else is taking this medication as it is a narcotic and may be addictive. Keep the medication securely under your control and do not give it to friends for pain.

Norco can cause negative interactions with other drugs or cause side effects. Be sure to inform your doctor of other medications you are taking. If you have had liver disease or are addicted to alcohol you should not take Norco or any drug with acetaminophen. Side effects include impaired thinking and reaction times. An overdose will cause symptoms of extreme drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, sweating and may affect the heart rate. Read all Norco contraindications prior to taking this drug or ask your pharmacist about possible side effects. An overdose may result in death.

Store Norco and other medications containing hydrocodone acetaminophen combinations in a cool dry place. If you happen to miss a dose do not take extra to make up for the miss. Drink plenty of water while taking Norco, about 6 to 8 glasses daily. Contact your doctor if you want to stop taking Norco as there may be withdrawal symptoms after long use. If you need surgery while taking Norco please inform your physician. This drug may affect certain urine tests. Notify your doctor if you have any drug allergies or previous history of disease, low blood pressure or thyroid problems.

Elmiron (pentosan polysulfate sodium) is used to treat interstitial cystitis. This is a chronic inflammatory condition of the bladder that both women and men can get. It is more common in women than men and it is though that up to 9 million women in the world have it today usually under 30 years old at its onset.

This Elmiron is usually prescribed three times a day and should be taken an hour before or two hours after meals. If you have a history of being allergic to heparin, tell your doctor or pharmacist, as many people who are also allergic to Elmiron. It should be prescribed with caution if you have a history of liver disease, spleen disorders, stomach or intestinal disorders or bleeding disorders as it can worsen these conditions. It should only be used during pregnancy if clearly needed and it is unknown if it passes into breast milk.

If you take with medication with non-steroidal anti-inflammatories, you are increasing the chance of experiencing side effects. If you are on low dose, aspirin continue taking it if your doctor advises to for medical reasons such as stroke or heart attack prevention.

There are some side effects that Elmiron can cause less severe ones are diarrhea, stomach upset, headache, abdominal pain, nausea and hair loss. Some other unlikely side effects that may occur are unusual bruising/bleeding, mood changes and discomfort when swallowing. If you experience these, notify your doctor for more advice.

Elmiron is actually a weak anticoagulant (blood thinner). This means it may increase bleeding. If you are planning surgery or have the need to take anticoagulant therapy (like warfarin or heparin), or high doses of aspirin or anti-inflammatory medications (ibuprofen).

Improvement in your interstitial cystitis symptoms will be gradual. Sometimes in as little as four weeks. If your take the drug long term you will find you experience relief from your symptoms of interstitial cystitis.

If you miss a dose of Elmiron take it as soon as possible, if it is close to the time for your next dose skip it and resume your regular schedule. Elmiron can be stored at room temperature and away from children and pets.
Elmiron is the first and only drug that is approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use in the discomfort and bladder pain associated with interstitial cystitis. It is manufactured by Ortho-McNeil Pharmaceutical, Inc.

Ultram (Tramadol) is a “narcotic like” pain reliever. It is a synthetic analgesic that is used to treat moderate to severe pain. Its mechanism of action is not entirely know, even by the scientific community but it is thought to work like morphine does. That means like morphine (and other opiods) it binds to receptors in the brain that send the sensation of pain to all the areas of the body. It is usually prescribed for pain secondary to arthritis/osteoporosis and back pain. Because it works like this along with being similar to morphine, it is very easy to be abused. You should not take Tramadol if you have ever had a drug or alcohol addiction problem as it has a high likelihood for abuse.

Tramadol should be taken exactly as your doctor prescribes it for you. Exactly as it is prescribed, you should not take any more for any reason. It is usually prescribed to be taken every four to six hours as needed to treat pain. The drug is highly habit forming so if you are taking it for an extended period of time you may build up a tolerance to it. This means that it will not work as well as it did when you first started to take it. Speak to your doctor if this happens, as he may need to change the dose or change your medication all together.

Ultram can cause several side effects, things like dizziness, weakness, stomach upset, nausea/vomiting, constipation, headaches, anxiety, dry mouth, increased sweating and irritability. If these side effects persist past when you first start on the drug or get worse let your doctor know. There are also some more serious side effects that Tramadol may cause. These include chest pain, rashes, itching, confusion, disorientation, seizures, fast heart rate, tingling of the hands and/or feet and trouble breathing.

Ultram works the best if you take it at the first sign of pain, if you wait until the pain gets severe the drug will not work as well to relieve it. This medication can also cause withdrawal reactions if you have been taking it for a while or in high doses and your suddenly stop. If you wish to stop taking the drug and you have been taking it regularly for a while speak to your doctor who will adjust your dosage schedule so you do not suffer from withdrawal. Symptoms of withdrawal include anxiety, sweating, insomnia, shaking, diarrhea and rapid breathing. The maximum dose you should take daily, when prescribed by a doctor is 400 milligrams a day total.

Experiencing symptoms of the cold and flu may not always be serious, but they can certainly lead to feelings of being weak and unproductive. Fortunately, Advil Cold and Sinus Caplets help to relieve the symptoms associated with the cold and flu.

Advil Cold and Sinus Caplets relieve such symptoms as sinus pressure, nasal congestion, headache, fever, and minor body aches and pains. These symptoms are the most common ailments experienced with the common cold and flu.

Advil Cold and Sinus Caplets can also be taken to relieve symptoms from allergies and respiratory infections, or as directed by a doctor. The makers of Advil Cold and Sinus Caplets stand by their product and assure sufferers that their medicine is the best pain reliever on the market.

The generic name for Advil Cold and Sinus Caplets is pseudoephedrine/ibuprofen capsules, which are the main ingredients in the medicine. Pseudoephedrine is a nasal decongestant, which is responsible for easing the symptoms of nasal congestion and sinus pressure. It works by constricting the blood vessels and reducing swelling in the tissues of the nose.

Ibuprofen is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug which helps to relieve pain and reduce fevers. Ibuprofen helps to ease body aches, pains, and headaches. It also works in the brain to reduce the feelings of pain, inflammation and soreness.

Advil Cold and Sinus Caplets is recommended for people over the ages of 12. One tablet every 4 to 6 hours should be taken while symptoms are present. If symptoms do not respond to one tablet, two tablets can be taken every 4 to 6 hours.

While Advil Cold and Sinus Caplets can be taken to relieve symptoms of the cold and flu, the dosage should not exceed more than 6 caplets within one day, or 24 hour period. Also be sure to talk to a doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions that may be affected by the ingredients used in Advil Cold and Sinus Caplets.

Although Advil Cold and Sinus Caplets are generally safe to take, there are certain circumstances where the caplets should not be taken. Some of these reasons include, but are not limited to, being in the 3rd trimester of pregnancy, having severe allergic reactions to the ingredients in Advil Cold and Sinus Caplets, or having severe high blood pressure.

There are also some medications that may interact with Advil Cold and Sinus Caplets, so talk with your doctor or pharmacist if you are on other medications. Sometimes there can be serious side effects when different drugs are mixed, or the effectiveness of Advil Cold and Sinus Caplets may be decreased.

Advil Cold and Sinus Caplets can be purchased from any pharmacy or grocery store. If a person is in a position where they cannot drive or leave the home, Advil Cold and Sinus Caplets can be conveniently purchased online as well.

Voltaren SR (Diclofenac Sodium SR) is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug used to treat mild to moderate pain, inflammation and fever. This class of drugs includes ones like Motrin (ibuprofen), Aleve (naproxen) and indomethacin (Indocin). These drugs reduce the amount of prostaglandins in your body, which are chemicals that cause the pain and inflammation. The FDA approved Voltaren in July of 1998.

Voltaren SR is not available over the counter like some non-steroidal anti-inflammatories are it requires a doctors prescriptions.

Diclofenac Sodium SR is used to treat the pain and inflammation from conditions such as all kinds of arthritis, soft tissue inflammations due to things like tendinitis and sprains along with ankylosing spondylitis and menstrual cramps.

Voltaren SR should be taken with food. You should take it as prescribed by your doctor. In addition, you should be aware that if you are taking lithium Diclofenac could increase the blood level of the drug, which could lead to toxicity. Diclofenac SR can also lower your blood pressure so if your take blood pressure medications also check your blood pressure a little more frequently than you usually do. Voltaren SR may also interact with certain antibiotics like Gentiamicin causes the blood levels of it to increase which could lead to side effects from the antibiotic. If you are taking any blood thinning medications like Coumadin avoid taking Voltaren SR altogether as it also thins the blood. Do not take the drug if you are pregnant as it can harm the cardiovascular system of the fetus. It is not known if it passes into breast milk or not.

Voltaren SR can cause the following side effects. These can become serious and you should check with your doctor if you experience them. They include stomach pain, cloudy urine, black or bloody stools, decrease in urine output, dizziness, headache, increased bleeding time, swelling, rash, pale skin, unusual tiredness or weakness, unusual bleeding or bruising, loss of appetite, nausea and vomiting, weight loss and vomiting blood or coffee ground like material. Signs of overdose include blurred vision, color blindness, confusion, depression, trouble breathing, hives, hostility, seizures, sleepiness, change in heartbeat, tightness in your chest, swelling of face, ankles or hands and pale or blue lips, fingernails or skin. If you experience any of these notify your doctor immediately.

If you miss a dose of this medication take it as soon as you remember unless it’s almost time for your next dose. If it is skip it and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Keep the medication at room temperature and away from children.
It is very important that you keep follow up visits with your doctor so he can monitor how Voltaren XR is working for you. He may need to do tests that check for side effects. This medication can raise your risk of a heart attack or stroke; if you use the medication for a long period of time your risk will increase. It can also cause bleeding in your intestines or stomach, if you have a history of an ulcer, smoke or drink, are over 60 or in poor health.

The amount of stress that physical exercise can put on your body can cause aches and muscle pains that some over the counter medicines cannot fix. A535 Sport Ultra Heat Glide On is a topical ointment used to relieve muscle pain during or after playing sports or any other sort of physical activity. The product glides on for a hands free application and can be used on just about any muscle. This product is great for athletes and those who enjoy exercise on a daily basis. It can also be used to relieve pain caused by a pulled muscle. It cannot fix the muscle, however it can lessen some of the pain that comes with it allowing you to function more easily.
If you know you have a certain problem area where a particular muscle hurts, you can apply the A535 Sport Ultra Heat Glide On before any activities that are stressful to that specific area. This will allow you to exercise or play longer and with less pain in that area throughout the workout.

The ointment is applied to the top of the skin above the point of pain in the muscle. It is then absorbed by the skin and seeps around and into the muscle where it generates heat. Acting as an anti-inflammatory, the heat allows the muscle to relax and as the muscle relaxes and the tension eases, the pain in the muscle then lets up allowing for recovery and a pain-free muscle. This also allows for the joints to feel more at ease because the muscles are less tense which takes stress off of surrounding joints and tendons.

A535 Sport Ultra Heat Glide On is an over the counter pain reliever and does not require a prescription like some other similar medicines do, so it is always accessible to whoever needs it. A535 is one of Canada’s top selling topical muscle pain relievers, much like Bio-freeze is in the United States. It is a relatively cheap product compared to its competitors that can sometimes cost as much as thirty to forty dollars per bottle. It can be bought online from different Canadian pharmacies and usually costs anywhere between eight dollars to even eighteen dollars depending on the amount being bought and shipping and handling.

It is also an odorless ointment making it preferable over other products whose smells have been known to overtake entire rooms or areas just by opening the bottle. The A535 Sport Ultra Heat Glide On also glides on the skin without any need for rubbing which leaves your hands clean and leaves out the risk of rubbing it into your mouth or eyes by accident which can be a very painful thing.

The Aspercreme Extra Strength Creme Rub should be used only as directed. There is always a possibility of an allergic reaction, as with any type of lotion or cream.

The Truth About Coated Aspirin Daily Low Dose

For many years aspirin has been prescribed by physicians as a means of reducing the risk of a first or even a second heart attack, especially for patients with a history of cardiovascular disease, because they exhibited an ability to reduce the formation of blood clots. The key ingredient in aspirin is ASA or Acetylsalicylic Acid.

With patient and doctor concerns about aspirins side effects on the stomach, such as ulcers, aspirin companies began coating some aspirin so that it would resist being dissolved in the stomach but instead would enter the colon before it fully dissolved. The assumption was that this enteric coating would not interfere with the aspirin being absorbed in the intestinal tract and therefore, would be just as effective as its uncoated version.

Over time it was discovered that lower doses, as those found in children’s aspirin, was just as effective as the normal higher dose in decreasing the risk of blood clots. Due to some less than desirable side effects of excessive amounts of aspirin in the blood stream, doctors began recommending low dose aspirin for this use routinely. These lower doses can also be found in the coated form.

Recent studies have found that enteric coated aspirin daily low dose is not absorbed effectively enough to reduce the risk of blood clotting. When compared to the uncoated form of the same aspirin products, it was found that coated versions were not as effective in reducing thromboxane, which is an indicator of the absorption of aspirin and its ability to reduce the risk of blood clotting. These indicators were at higher levels in the body of the test group that used coated aspirin daily low dose than those who used the uncoated form.

A further finding indicates that body mass also contributes to the decrease in effectiveness of the enteric coated variety of aspirin. As shown in one study a normal-weight person has about a 20% chance of not receiving satisfactory absorption of aspirin from a coated brand. Likewise, the absorption rate fell even more with over-weight patients. Weight is also a factor with patients that are using any kind of aspirin for other reason than the benefits to the cardio system such as pain control. These findings may explain why some patients have been considered to be resistant.

All things considered aspirin is still a good source of controlling the effects that blood clots have on the systems of the body. Patients should consult their doctors when determining what dosages to take of the coated aspirin in order to obtain the greatest benefit from these products for their health.
