Norco
Norco is an excellent pain reliever that should be carefully monitored because it could become addictive due to the active ingredient hydrocodone which contains derivatives from the narcotic opiates of cocaine and thebaine. It is prescribed for moderate to severe pain. Norco also contains another common pain reliever, acetaminophen. Acetaminophen actually increases the effects of hydrocodone. There may be side effects including liver damage or death from an overdose.
Norco is just one brand name that this product is sold under. Other familiar brand names of the same medicine include Vicodin and Lortab. This medicine does not go well with alcohol because of its connection with liver disease. Pregnant women or those who may become pregnant while taking Norco should not take this drug. It is not to be used if a woman is breast feeding because it can pass to the baby through breast milk. A baby could show withdrawal symptoms if exposed to Norco or it may cause breathing problem or addiction.
Adults should not exceed a maximum amount of 4000 mg of acetaminophen daily. The usual mixed hydrocodone acetaminophen tablets have about 750 mg each. The doctor’s orders should be followed expressly and this drug should be taken only by the person to whom it is prescribed. While taking Norco be diligent to count the tablets remaining so you are positive no one else is taking this medication as it is a narcotic and may be addictive. Keep the medication securely under your control and do not give it to friends for pain.
Norco can cause negative interactions with other drugs or cause side effects. Be sure to inform your doctor of other medications you are taking. If you have had liver disease or are addicted to alcohol you should not take Norco or any drug with acetaminophen. Side effects include impaired thinking and reaction times. An overdose will cause symptoms of extreme drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, sweating and may affect the heart rate. Read all Norco contraindications prior to taking this drug or ask your pharmacist about possible side effects. An overdose may result in death.
Store Norco and other medications containing hydrocodone acetaminophen combinations in a cool dry place. If you happen to miss a dose do not take extra to make up for the miss. Drink plenty of water while taking Norco, about 6 to 8 glasses daily. Contact your doctor if you want to stop taking Norco as there may be withdrawal symptoms after long use. If you need surgery while taking Norco please inform your physician. This drug may affect certain urine tests. Notify your doctor if you have any drug allergies or previous history of disease, low blood pressure or thyroid problems.
