Question:

Are you thinking of doing it for cosmetic reasons?? Cherise

I have kept hoping that a woman would bring up a point with you so that I didn’t have too.  I have always had a fear that when I grew older, I did NOT want to ever be considered a "Dirty old man."  That is why I have hesitated to bring something to your attention.  I hope I have figured out a way so I don’t come off that way.  When you are considering this precedure, be sure to consider everything. I do NOT know anything about it so I may well be concerned needlessly and am only making a fool of myself, but Whatever.  I do NOT know what exactly is done in this procedure, but what I am concerned about and only bring to your attention so that you can check into it and consider it, after you have this, how does it effect erogenous areas? Does it effect it?  If not, I am worrying for nothing, and I apologize.  However if it does, it is something to consider.         I hope I am not offending you, my intention is good. Good luck whatever you decide and if you do do it, I hope it cures your Migraines forever.  Thank you.     BTW…..My oldest daughter considered it when she was about 19 because she was quite active in athletics and it caused her a lot of problems, but she never followed through on it.

Response:

Well, this is a new one.  I’m currently considering the surgery for other reasons, and would be thrilled if it fixed my migraines, too.  Still, it seems a little farfetched to me, and I wouldn’t do it for that reason. Still, it sounds like you are a prime candidate for the surgery anyway — do let us know if you do it!! jayne

Response:

Believe me they are migraines!

I do believe your headaches are migraines.  What I wonder is if the doctor is mistakenly applying a cure for tension headaches (breast reduction) to a patient who has migraines(you).  It sounds incredible, but almost everyone on this forum has stories they could tell you about doctors who don’t understand migraine headaches.  That includes people who got unnecessary surgery (TMJ, neck) and are still suffering because of it. Please see a headache specialist before you let them perform surgery on you. Russell Van Zandt

I’m glad you men are having so much fun with this thread. You could always strap a few 5-lb bags of flour to your chests for a day and feel the thrill. <VBG Julie

Response:

Reduction sounds like a treatment for tension headache, not migraine. Some people call any severe headache a migraine, so I wonder if there might be some confusion in the success stories the doctor mentioned. Russell

Thank you for the complement. Although like Julie has said, it is a big strain on your body to carry so much weight on your chest!! Cherise

Has anyone had a breast reduction to help with migraines?? When I was in college, a girl in my dorm had a reduction.  Her breasts were very large in proportion to her overall body structure. The additional weight caused her a great deal of back and neck pain not to mention regular trips to the chiropractor to straighten out her spine.  I don’t recall her complaining of migraines but it sounds like they could be caused by this type of thing.  Can’t say I’d jump on this one but it is certainly worth a few more questions to the dr.  Maybe even consult a chiropractor or physical therapist. Sally

Sorry, but I couldn’t help noticing that we’re talking about breasts, and now someone is talking about "jumping on this one . . . "  Are we back to the old question of whether sex cures headaches?   :) Live Long and Prosper J. Michael Phillips http://www.eskimo.com/~wizkidm/

Sally        I know chiropractor manipulate spines and muscles, but….. ;<) Wayne //ann Guess I should clarify… The girl I knew in college went to the chiropractor because the weight of her breasts was pulling the vertabrea out of wack.  I suggested Cherise maybe consult a chiropractor or physical therapist to see if her back muscles and/orspine was being pulled out of their natural position due to the size (weight) of her breasts thus contributing to her migraines.  Sorry if I implied otherwise.         No, you didn’t, I was just being a smart-a**.  The devil made me do it!  I just can’t help it sometimes. /ayne //ann "The President has kept all of the promises he intended to keep."  - George Stephanopolous on "Larry King Live"  - 2/16/96

Dear Cherise — At first when I read your post I thought where in the world …..   But, then I thought about all the strain that this problem places on the shoulders.  I know that it can cause backaches and shoulder pain (probably neck pain, too).   Even still, it sure seems an extremely radical step to take.  A second or third opinion is in order here.  I would be surprised if a group of neurologists would agree that breast reduction would be helpful for migraines. Has anyone had a breast reduction to help with migraines?? That is one of the thoughts of my doctors.  I had decided against it and then I heard of someone who had success with that. Cherise, I hope that they were kidding.   I haven’t heard of tht at all and god help me if it’s true cause I don’t got much to reduce.  I am having a hard time believing that something I don’t have much of is causing my headaches. Response:

How many migraines were you having before the reduction?? Because 2/month sounds pretty good.  Since I currently have them daily

Cherise, 2 a month is normal and those are hormonal. If I’m having a stress-filled month that can easily go to 4+. I had tried the Imitrex pills but they stopped working after about the 6th time. No rebound or anything. They  simply stopped. About all I can do now is wait for my vision to return and then take 4 Aleve. If I’m home, I grab my Stadol. Julie

and I never heard of breast reduction as a cure for migraine but I had it done last Aug and it certainly solved the end-of-the-day headaches I would get that went up my neck and  the back of my head. Unfortunately, I can still count on at least 2 migraines a  month. For what it’s worth, I’m so pleased with the results that I would  have it done again  in a heartbeat. Julie

A relationship between breast size and headaches seems quite far fetched. Unless you’re already considering breast reduction for other reasons, I suggest that you wait for more evidence than a single anecdote that this procedure works and is worth the surgery that you’ll have to go through.
