Question:

Hi, Lurking in this ng from time to time, I’ve noticed some references to IBS and chest pain.  What is the nature of IBS-related chest pain?  What is its origin (esophagus, I’d assume)? I get some wierd chest pain (diagnosed as non-cardiac) from time to time.  Perhaps your experiences are similar to mine. Thanks Mark

It’s not always IBS-related. I had massive, crushing chest pains that turned out to be ossification on the duodenal wall of my gallbladder. Not serious enough for surgery (yay!), but very painful. Mine can be controlled by eating regularly (not eating regularly led to my gallbladder problem).

I have had some chest pains when I eat too much & also when  I bloat up.  I think it is pressure on the diaphram.  I can get left shoulder pain too.

Response:

I get pains in my chest that seem to be a warning that I am due for awful gas and and hour or two of running to the bathroom.  Happens when I am going to have a particularily bad time of it.  Like the other writer, I also get pains in my shoulders.  Somehow I think it’s related to the gas.

No cardiac pain related to the shoulder.  It is from pressure on the diaphram. I read about certain surgeries that allow air to get up under the diaphram & then will cause left shoulder pain.  Also trauma to the ab.  I was in a car accident when I was 16 and had 10 days of observation in the hospital due to trauma to the ab that caused it to feel like I’d been doing situps for yrs—hard as a rock.  I kept getting left shoulder pain too.  Couldn’t find anything wrong with my shoulder.  I’d get this pain if I had a soda too for quite a while.    Finally I found out yrs later that it was from the trauma to the diaphram.  I now get this hard ab for no reason it seems since this IBS has started up.  I often wonder if my ab muscles weren’t sensitized by this accident.
