gardening in beautiful weather
Question:
Well, another gorgeous day and I finished with the flower bed. I went the easy way out: bought some of that all in one stuff that looks like broken up paper insulation. You just spread it around the bed and water is a couple times a day. In 15 days, it begins to sprout. I had the wild flowers two years ago and didn’t like them at all, because they looked like weeds most of the time. And they were perennials, which meant I had to deal with left over weeds last year. I think I got most of them out now. And I just spread out the mixture for impacians and alyssums (sp on both? who cares…). They are nice and low to the ground so hopefully they will look nice…we’ll see. Anyway. I don’t feel all that bad this afternoon. The muscles still hurt and my hands are swollen but the shoulder pain is gone… I am fatigued though, which is not good because I still need to finish a report…. —ali life is what happens when you’re making other plans…

- Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Thanks for this thread, guys. I’ve been grinning all morning. Here in San Francisco, the sun is shining, the sky is clear and blue as far as I can see out my windows, and the violas in my window boxes are beginning to bloom. The birds have begun to make greater inroads on the feeding station, and as I type a couple of mourning doves are eyeing one another across the birdbath on the fire-escape. The next-door yard is full of the yellow blooms of sour-grass (a local name for a variety of sorrel). There’s a vine of pink jasmine on the back of the building that scoots by our bedroom and bathroom windows, and the scent is per- meating the apartment. I’ve decided that when we *do* buy a house, one of the first things I’ll do is plant pink jasmine, even if it does grow like a weed. Stacy Scott

Hi Lori & Harv, I’m not Celia, but my husband is from Bellevue in Washington State and Puget Sound is beautiful, especially from the space needle!! My husband would LOVE to move back there and as beautiful as it is I already know me & Arthur would not be toooo happy with the cold and the rain. — Take Care, Phyllis To send email remove "NO_SPAM" from address

And finally weeded out the front garden. Some of my daffodils are actually sprouting. And a few crocasis.
I went out this morning and picked me a huge bunch of daffodils. I am hurting alot today, but somehow the pain is more tolerable when the sun is shining, flowers are blooming, and trees are budding! Now if I can just get thru a roller skating party this afternoon!!!!! Keep Smilin’ ~Krissy "The most thoroughly wasted of all days is that in which one has not laughed." Nicolas Chamfort

- Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Hi, all… Just had to share my wonderful day with you. The past few days have been beautiful here in CT. Waking up to 55 degrees and the sun is full and warm, with the max temp only going up to 75. Anyway, I got an early start today (8am – well, it’s sunday – I tend to sleep in until 10) And finally weeded out the front garden. Some of my daffodils are actually sprouting. And a few crocasis. And then I also sweeped the driveway and handwashed my car. I am willing to bet that I will be a hurting puppy tomorrow, and my shoulders haven’t been doing all that great anyway. And my hands have already puffed up (12pm). But it really did feel good to be out and enjoying the morning. Just wanted to spread my good mood…. Hope everyone else is having the great weather we are!! —ali life is what happens when you’re making other plans…
THAT’s NOT FARE! (wimper, wimper) I have my back yard all dug up and ready for the sprinkler system. I have starters that need to be transplanted, and I have enough energy to do it all now – but it’s SNOWING! Please spring, come back to me – please! (I’m really jelous Ali.) Walt Hanks

Lori, I get swelling on the bottom of my feet all the time. My hubby thinks I’m nuts because I prefer to wear shoes than togo without. They provide my feet the extra support. Being barefoot just hurts too much most days… Something to dowith the swelling, I’m sure. —Ali life is what happens when you’re making other plans…

Here in Puget Sound it is cold but sunny and bright. The bright part has us mushrooms blinded and confused but happy, the monsoon usually doesn’t stop for a month or two. My grass is over ankle height and if you step on it you sink. I can’t mow it these days anyway, but today’s gift was a friend who risked sinking to oblivion in the bog to mow it for me and then found someone to do it on a regular basis. I feel really lucky. And the crocus are up and the crabapples are blooming. Hope it doesn’t freeze their little bloomers off tonight. — Celia "Any landing you can walk away from is a good one." Super Chicken

Hi Ali – It has been beautiful here in NJ too. I even took a walk (first time in a long time) around our neighborhood with my husband and enjoyed the warmth of the sun. I noticed in your post about your hands "puffing up" – that happens to me too – even from just walking. I had no idea this happened to others, just thought I was weird. Have you figured out what activity seems to make it worse? Just curious. I use to LOVE gardening but haven’t been able to do it these last couple of years other than container gardens. Problem is when I was at my best I put in so many things that demand attention that now my poor husband is overwhelmed. So plan this year is to dig up and give away a lot and replant very low maintenance shrubs. Sad, but looking at an area uncared for is sadder yet. However, I LOVE spring. Windows open, listening to birds, neighborhood dogs and children playing – it’s great! Toni

I also get the puffed hands just from walking. And they get itchy as well, particuary in hot weather. They tend to feel bloaty in the palms of the hands. Anytime I’m holding something tightly (tools, bag, etc) for a period of time, or if as in walking, I’m swinging my arms down at my side, I will notice the puffing. I’m thinking it’s just more blood getting pooled at the hands. But who knows… Well, today, the back of my hands are really swollen as expected after my gardening. My shoulders are into it as well. But I got lucky, only muscle aches in my legs. And that’s from not stretching as I should have… —Ali (another beautiful day today – but hotter – 85 degrees) life is what happens when you’re making other plans…

Well, I’m about the have a little snit. It’s been rainy and cold down here in the desert for the last 3 days and it doesn’t look like today is going to be any better. The other day it was colder in Phoenix. That isn’t supposed to happen. —- The Skipper To reply remove "remove".

Okay Kate, today so far I have chased (figuritivly) my 2 yr old around the yard, dug up the sandbox (it was all packed down) and I actually hung out a load of sheets on the clothesline!! So instead of torturing you further I want to send some of the sunshine to you! 2nd turn it on (removing lampshade is optional) 3rd lean close to lamp This works even better if you have some beach music playing in the background ! Seriously the sun and warmth will be there soon!!!! Ours is surely just a fluke and I’m positive it’s only a cruel joke and we will have a few more cold days here too! Well going outside<G…. Lori

Ali, I am also one of those people who have always loved to go barefoot, I don’t know why but here at home for me it was pretty much the norm…….but I do not go barefoot in public places….. that reaally grosses me out to go to the grocery store and see people walking around with bare feet!!!! Anyway you are right….the bottoms of my feet are super sensitive can’t go barefoot and still hurts to wear my shoes also….so what do you do? And just to go ahead and complain further(anyone rolling their eyes yet?) after gardening on Sat my hand are so sensitive that they can’t stand even moderately hot water…..that was a shock! I have called both dr’s today and they are supposedly on the move….have not had any med since ya’ Lori
