Question:

Hi, I bloated up 10 pounds (and I only weigh 102 pounds) The fluid and gas that was pumped into me was very uncomfortable for two days. My doctor told me to drink lots of fluids and it would all come out, which it did in two days. I also did walk around and even rode a bike the next day after my lap That’s my story… Nancy

Hi everyone. I’m about to go for my third lap, this time in France, prior to starting IVF in February. Has anyone got any hints on how NOT to suffer from the gas pains afterwards? I don’t mind the anaesthetic, but remember feeling very uncomfortable both times from the gas. Does it help to move around (difficult), or avoid/eat anything?? Thanks. Faye

When I had my Lap I was told that I would have pain from the gas…but I did not have any to speak of.  I was up walking around, I stayed at my moms house for that day and that night (because my husband works nights) My mom kept telling me to lay down. But I did not. It hurt a little to walk but I did it anyway. I do not know if the walking around kept me from having the pain from the gas or not, this is just what I did. Also my Dr. said when his wife had her lap  they went to a concert that Well I guess that is my exciting lap story Good luck to you on your next Lap Castle 3 cycles clomid 2 m/c lap 5 + years trying

Response:

Tums and lots of water — don’t sit down or lie down for very long either — but the Tums worked like a charm!!!

I have also heard to take GasEx. I don’t know if it works or not, but I remember feeling like I would try anything. ++++ thoughts to everyone! Renea

Response:

What helped me was simethicone.  That might be what’s in GasEx, but any generic brand will do.  I had very bad problems with gas after my first lap,  but almost none after the second.  Could be because I got sick, sick, sick from the anesthesia too. good luck,     Anne

I’m not saying this wouldn’t work, but when you look at where the gas is, it seems like it may not, unless some of the gas gets into the stomach area.     What they do is pump a lot of gas into the abdomen to blow you up so they can see around easier. You can ask the doc to make sure he gets as much as possible out before closing you up. This has helped a bit with me.     So, the gas is ‘floating’ around outside your stomach and intestinal tract, just inside your body, in no specific organs. This is why we feel the pain in our shoulders. It starts out in the abdomen, then when we sit or stand, it ‘floats’ *up* to the shoulder area. Two things that helped me the most:     First: when on my back, I raised my legs and bum, with lots of pillows, making sure they were above my shoulders. This helps the gas to ‘float’ back down away from shoulder area. (It gets trapped in the shoulder cavities…..thank God it doesn’t go up any further, hehehe, like I’m not enough of an airhead, at times….LOL !!)     Second: I got up every 1 to 1/2 hour, as able, to walk slowly around my house. Moving around more helps the gas to dissipate faster.     By my 4th lap, I only had the really bad shoulder pain for 1/2 a day, instead of 3 days, as in my first lap. This has been my experience, and I hope it helps some others :) MaryBeth Riverton, NJ
