Question:

Hi, I have an 83 year old father who is a diabetic but has great control.  He has; however, developed some type of severe pain in both shoulders.  He said he will not see a doctor but does want help with the pain.

I have no comment on the glucosamine…however, shoulder pain can be caused by rotator cuff damage which can even be caused by the position in which one sleeps.  So…my best advice would be to see a GOOD orthopedist, preferably trained in sports medicine, who can fairly easily determine whether it’s an "impinged shoulder" that’s causing the pain.  If it is, there are a number of simple exercises that will help a lot, particularly when combined with ice therapy to reduce inflamation. Shoulder impingement can severely restrict activity simply because it hurts too much to pick things up, reach for things, etc.  It also will disturb sleep because the shoulder(s) hurt if you get in the wrong position.   There’s no guarantee that this is your father’s problem, of course, but I would strongly encourage him to have this checked out early on because if this is the problem, the sooner therapy for it is begun, the better his chances for complete recovery. Carol P. <—been there, done that, and so have my parents…one got appropriate treatment and is fine, the other did not and needs surgery that his physical condition won’t permit.

Hi, I have an 83 year old father who is a diabetic but has great control.  He has; however, developed some type of severe pain in both shoulders.  He said he will not see a doctor but does want help with the pain.  His mailman suggested glucosamine.  Would anyone know how long it takes to begin working, does it work, etc.

I’d like to make an appointment with his mailman. Do you have a phone number? :) Randy
