HELP SHOULDER GAS PAIN
Question:
my back pain came a couple of days after the surgery. It may sound werid but i found that i needed to keep moving
Couldn’t agree more. I tried heat, massage, pain meds, etc. for the first 3 laps with the gas pains. I found on the last (4th) lap that the only thing that helped and helped quickest to to get up every 15 minutes or so, and take a slow walk around the house. Don’t overdo it, but do take your time and get up and about. Also, when laying down,( and this was told to me by a nurse), I made sure my lower body and legs were elevated above my upper torso…..makes sense to me, as the gas is in your body and has moved *up*…if you lower the upper torso, it helps the gas to move *down*. Not as painful, for me, in the lower areas, as it was in the shoulders. Good Luck, and know it will be over in a few days. MaryBeth

Hi, I just had a lap last week. Besides all pain meds, I was told that Warmed up ginger ale will help the gas. It did help some. Make sure you walk around alittle too. The more meds you take the more constirpation will kick in. I used milk of mag. which worked great. Good luck and hope you feel better! Val

Wriggle. Wriggle until you can wriggle no more (others call it exercise). And wait. But keep moving around. Sue

I had really bad shoulder pain after my first lap. (after the surgery, the nurse just said I might have a little shoulder pain – what an understatement!). I was moving around more than I should have for the first day and a half (no one to help me). Finally, after 48 hrs. straight of this pain, I called another hospital (it was a weekend), and the nurse there told me to lie flat on my back and put a heating pad under my shoulders. Worked like a charm! The pain was gone within a fairly short time. Now, why couldn’t they have told me that at the time of my lap.? Carol

I really liked heat on my shoulders when I had this done (twice now). A cheap, impromptu heating pad–clean tube sock, bag of rice(don’t worry about instant vs. regular stuff–it doesn’t matter). Fill the sock about 2/3 full (more flexible) and either sew the open end shut or tie a knot in it. Microwave it for a minute or two (not too hot!). It keeps its heat for a surprisingly long time, isn’t too heavy, and I thought it really helped. Painfree wishes! Jodi B.

I remember that pain. My grandmother (big herbal fanatic) said to take peppermint tea, lay on my left side and have my husband lightly rub my back. Many times my husband wasn’t around but the tea did help. She also told me that if the pain doesn’t go away she wanted me to take "charcoal" tablets. You can get them in the health stores. They look just like charcoal and feel just like charcoal. But what happens is that the charcoal soaks up the air left over in your body. That has also proven to be very helpful for me.

Hi Donna– After my second surgery, I had awful gas pain. The doctor suggested tea w/ lemon in it and EXERCISE. No matter how much it hurt, I forced myself up every half hour, and walked a around the house. Believe it or not, after several hours, the gas finally dissipated. I had suffered for two days before trying this. I also find that a heating pad on the shoulder helped ease the discomfort. I have been told that there is some sort of drug that can be prescribed, but my doctor wouldn’t do it because of all the work I had done around the bowel. The good news is it will dissipate, and I hope for your sake that will be soon. Good luck to you. Laurie
