Questions about Laparoscopy
Question:
Laparoscopy is not that bad. Hurts quite a bit right after but is much better within 24 hours. Everyone says to walk around afterword to get rid of the gas (you feel it in your chest whenever you sit up). My suggestion is to lie flat on your back for the first day. I’ve had three so I have some experience with it. Good luck!!!

I go in for my lap (first one) in a week , very nevous and a hysteroscopy, I have a fibroid in the uterus. 2 cycles on clomid & iui 1 clomid cycle canceled due to the fibroid I would also love helpful hints to get rid of the shoulder pain, if it should occurr. lisa

I’m scheduled for a Laparoscopy after new years and want to hear from people who’ve had it…. what happens, does it hurt. My RE said it’s an outpatient surgery and I’ll need 2 additional days off to recover. any info is appreciated. 3 cycles of Clomid 3 IUI’s w/o meds Just hit my 2 year anniversary of trying…..
Response:
Yes, it’s outpatient surgery. It’s really not too bad. My worst problem was with getting rid of the gas bubbles in my abdomen after the surgery. They can be quite painful until the gas is reabsorbed. They blow gas into the abdomen to be able to see around the uterus, tubes, ovaries on the outside. Two days to recover is probably a worst case scenario. I was feeling better by the next night after the surgery. BTW, you’ll either have two or three incisions, one in the navel and one or two down near the uterus. It all depends on what they find when they go in. First lap, no endo showing, but my small intestine was wrapped around left tube. They separated them and shut me up. Extreme pain in left shoulder from gas. (What happens with the gas, they blow up your tummy with, is it isn’t inside any organs, so not contained, it will move *up* your body and usually lodge in shoulder area.) When on my back, I make sure my legs and butt are above my shoulders, this helps to move it back down there. Also, and I didn’t believe this until my 3rd lap, getting up every hour or more and walking slowly around the house, helps to dissipate the gas quicker. I was up and about in two days, max. 2nd lap was exploratory, as that doc was in rush to talk me into hysterectomy…sheesh. Not much pain, but found lots of endo, however with my instructions he was to do nothing. I was up and about the next day. 3rd lap, went back in, took right tube and ovary, fibroid tumor on uterus, and tons of endo. Also many adhesions lysed (cut). Had mega shoulder pain, and was down for the count for 3-4 days, before I could do anything. 4th lap, had right side of uterus, colon and small intestine detached from right abdominal wall. 3 uterine fibroids removed, left tube cleaned, ovarian cysts removed from left ovary, tons of endo in cul de sac and all over right side. Also had that nerve cut from cul de sac area, a sacro…neuro…thingie (can’t remember name of procedure) but it was to cut down amt. of pain from endo. I was down and out for 5-6 days. Was able to walk around but that was about it. So, just know that no matter how long *you* feel you need to recover will be normal for you. Don’t let the docs tell you that you should be up and about the next day. I mean, you could be fine, but don’t feel guilty if you’re not. Depending on what they do, it will vary. Good luck, and email me if you’d like

I have had one – They put you totally out so you dont feel any pain – They make two incisions – one by your belly button and one lower – they put a tube in you and fill the area full of gas and then insert a scope to look around. The only real discomfort is pain in your shoulders – due to the fact they cant get all the gas out and it rises to your shoulders. It does go away. If they find anything unusual they might remove it ( I had cysts on my ovaries) and then you might have pain but, if not just pain in the shoulders from the gas. Good Luck
