Shoulder Pain – Exactly like after a lap and Carbon Dioxide
Question:
Exactly the same thing happens to me. The pain in my shoulder returns usually if I get gassy. You might try taking some gas-x to see if that helps the pain to go away. Senja
Response:
Hi Senja, Unfortunately I’ve torn the muscles in my shoulder
I wish it was as easy as taking something to relieve gas, but I’m to be resting my shoulder as much as possible and not over doing it. I’m also suppose to be taking anti-inflammatories for it. It’s doing better now, it only seems to hurt if I do too much. Thanks for the reply. Arianna – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Exactly the same thing happens to me. Thank you for the responses. I don’t seem to have any gas but I am wondering if maybe I did trap a nerve somehow while I was sleeping. I’m going to contact my doctor and make an appt to see her and see what she thinks. Arianna
Arianna, I was going to reply to you and say that I have been having the same shoulder pain which I put down to gas since I increased the fibre in my diet after surgery (and I have been having ‘gas-like’ pains, but not a lot of gas!!). However, when I talked to the nurse at the surgery and mentioned this shoulder pain, she seemed sceptical. I’m not sure if the shoulder pain is really only a surgical thing or if indeed you do get shoulder pain when you have a lot of trapped gas – perhaps someone knows the answer to this? I do now know that the gas pains I was getting were not gas pains at all but a result of my doing too much. They have gone away since I took it down a gear, and so have the shoulder pains, so I think I had referred pain or whatever too. Anne. Not sure that rambling message is much help on re-reading? Sorry. :0)

Arianna, Do you happen to do any strength training? I work out with very light weights and before I ever had a lap done I used to get this pain in my shoulder. Always the right one. My dr said the pain was just from the repetive motion with the weights. After my first lap I was surprised at how similar the pain was to what I had experienced before. After all three of my laps I only experienced pain in my right shoulder. If I go awhile without using the weights and then go back to using them, the same pain returns for a few days, Just a thought. DId you find out anything more about the blood in your urine? Take good care of yourself. Shalona

Response:
Hi, I agree it sounds like referred pain from after a lap like Dutchie said. I think it’s also possible for the actual gas to move that far up (I had a similar pain in my shoulder after my first lap). That said, since it’s been some time since surgery I would look for other possible causes for the pain. It’s not hard to injure one’s shoulder – I did it once from the repetitive movements in yoga of all things. My shoulder pain was sorted out by an osteopath but a regular internist could at least take a look at where it hurts and when and make suggestions. Susan

I too read an article that the gas pain actually hurts so bad because of the phenic?? nerve in the diaphragm. Apparently it (the gas) is so cold when it is injected that it causes all kinds of pain. I was thinking that same thing that the previous poster wrote; was there something that could have hurt the diaphragm and caused the referred pain? Maybe a heating pad would help? There was a good article on this somewhere which I can no longer find in my favorite places, sorry…it was on a website to the effect of "Endo Awareness and Info" or something. Sorry that’s not much help. Feel better.
Response:
Hi Arianna, Sorry this isn’t a very helpful response. That just sounds so strange to me. The fact that it helps when you lie down sounds, as you say, exactly like the CO2 pains after a lap. From what I understand that’s a referred pain from the diaphragm (don’t take that as gospel, please). Is there some kind of condition that would cause diaphragm pain other than endo? Again, sorry I can’t help, but I feel for you. If/when you see a doc let us know what he/she thinks. Dutchie
Response:
Hi, Okay this may sound very strange, but since the weekend in my left shoulder I’ve been getting pain off and on that is exactly like after a lap when the carbon dioxide gas is leaving the body. Does anyone have any ideas what can cause this feeling besides the gas as it’s been almost 2 years since my last lap? The pain is really bothering me as I have to stop doing whatever I’m doing and lie down until the pain subsides. There’s no warning – it just hits. If anyone has any ideas please let me know. Arianna
