Question:

Immediately following a ten mile race I noticed some pain in my right shoulder.  It feels sort of like tendonitis, but I’m really not like sure.  It’s definitely not the sort of pain felt after a good workout.   Anyhow, I was wondering if other people have had this sort of problem, how long it takes to recede and whether or not there are any good exercises to strengthen the shoulder for running.  BTW, I typically do a long run of about 11 miles once a week and have never felt this sort of thing, but the race pace was faster than my normal training runs.    Thanks.     Allen Bellas     U of Washington Econ Dept.

I’m not a doctor, but my first recommendation would be to stop running on your hands.  :-) Seriously, I sometimes notice on a long run that my upper back, shoulders, neck and arms are quite tense.  I find that I can avoid the post-run discomfort if I stretch a few times along the way.
