You may be getting air in your peritoneum. That will travel up to your shoulders and neck. Nancy

Let it flush until there are no more bubbles going into the drain bag. Also, I had neck and shoulder pain for about a month after each catheter surgery. I think it was from the positioning or handling during the surgery. (I had general anesthesia with a breathing tube each time.) If I had not been so ill from uremia each time, I would have gone to a chiropractor or something to get "re-aligned" post-op. And one more thing: during the first month I did PD, I was very wired, both happy to be feeling better and tense about this now way of life. That tension resulted in really classic neck and shoulder pain which, as my tension dissipated over time, resolved itself. Congratulations on starting PD – how is it going? – Martha S.

I do not know how to get rid of the pain you are having. Just make sure you bleed the line after breaking the flangible. Everything will become familiar and automatic after you have been on dialysis for a while. Good luck to you and enjoy the new energy you will have in time. Nancy

It will all get better and better! I remember that, especially right after the catheter surgeries and then also during the first month or so of PD, I thought sometimes that I was very very tired of always having something that hurt. I went and got a haircut and it was bliss, really and truly, simply because nothing the hairdresser did to me hurt! Your body is adjusting now and that takes time and work. Try to relax and move normally and walk tall and strong – I kept reminding myself to count my blessings and not my troubles during this time and that really helped, too. As for the air- make bleeding the line your new religion and I suspect the air that is trapped now will disappear in time – although, I agree, you might want to address this with your PD nurse to see if she has any hints to speed things up. – Martha
