Sinuses and neck/shoulder pain
Question:
Hello, As the topic is introducing, can sinuses problems cause neck/shoulder pain? Here’s my case: i’m suffering from severe, constant neck/shoulder/jaw/eye pain for 10 years now. Mostly on right side. I’ve seen many specialists but none could bring me some relief. So i tried to find the problem by myself and suspected TMJ (Tempro-mandibular Joint Syndrome). I had an expensive device made for this, but no luck. Then i suspected something else, my sinuses. Most of the time i feel my right sinuses lightly congested, but no nasal discharge though. Sinuses on right side? Interesting, since the neck/shoulder pain is much more severe on the right side. A good reason to see a doctor, and this is what i did. Explained the problem. She said that it’s not possible to have that kind of sinus problems for so many years, and refused my request to have sinus scans. My question is, could my sinuses be responsible for my neck/shoulder/jaw/eye pain? I’m despaired, thanks for any help. Matt

It is possible to have problems for a long time without relief or resolution. Jaw and eye pain are commonly caused by sinus problems. I do not know if shoulder or neck pain can be directly caused by sinus problems. But, I do know that sinus pain is severe, and might radiate into the neck and back. Severe sinus pain can also make you quite tense. The sinus and jaw pain might be the result of sinus problems and the neck and shoulder may be tension related. It is quite common to have no sinus discharge on the side with the headaches. The headaches are partially caused by pressure build up in the sinuses because the discharge is not able to escape due to blocked passageways. If the scans show sinus problems, it might also be wise to suspect allergies. -O Stick with your intuition a bit longer, and see another doctor. Try seeing an ENT, and ask again for the sinus scans. I get neck pain whenever my sinuses act up. To the point that I have difficulty turning my head. — Steven L.

First my qualifications: I had my sinuses drained for the first time when I was 13. (At that time the procedure was rather barbaric.) I’ve suffered from sinus problems all my life, had 5 surgeries and since I’ve consulted this group plus discussing what I found here with my excellent ENT, I’ve had some relief. Right now I’ve got one of those headaches, but I’m writing to all of you anyway because I’m a stoic. :-) My massage therapist suggested an odd approach that works for me. I put 2 tennis balls in a sock and tie the end so that it fits snuggly under my neck. Then I lie upon my back with the gizmo under the top of my neck / base of my skull and move my head forward and back, side to side, gently. I generally find considerable relief after 10 minutes or so. My pain is usually on the right side. Another thing that works is to turn my head gently so as to look over my left shoulder. Again, I use slow, gradual up and down movements. This is even better if done with a hot shower running on the neck/shoulder area. My family physician and a physiotherapist both told me about this one. I had shoulder replacement surgery 8 months ago. (I’m old, so recovery is slow.) I noticed that I would get the same pain from the weakened rotator cuff muscles that I got from my sinus. I wonder if the sinus pain is, at least in part, caused by tension in the general area which tightens up these same muscles? Does anyone have any ideas about that?
