Abdomen pain can be caused from so many different illnesses. It is important to be aware of abdomen pain that could be very serious and when to seek medical help from a doctor. Here are a few questions and answer that should be addressed about abdominal pain.

What is abdomen pain?

It is any discomfort in the abdominal area.

What causes abdomen pain?

There are a variety of medical illnesses that can cause abdomen pain.

Why can abdomen pain be difficult to diagnose?

There are so many illnesses that can cause abdomen pain and many of them have similar symptoms. It is important to be aware of the other symptoms that accompany the abdomen pain and where the pain is located. Some of the symptoms that could be present with abdominal pain are fever, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, chills and muscle aching.

What can a person do to help their doctor determine a diagnosis?

It is important for a person to answer all of the doctors questions and to speak up about all the symptoms and how long they have experienced them.

What are a few causes of abdomen pain and what may determine the cause?

The sudden onset of steady pain in the abdomen usually means that there is a problem with one of the organs such as an appendicitis attack or rupture, obstruction of the bile duct caused by a gallstone or an obstruction of the bowl that could possibly be from by a kink in the intestines or something else.

Cramping pain in the abdomen that comes in waves and is accompanied with vomiting, diarrhea, fever, chills and body aches is often caused by a flu virus.

It is always important to to get medical advice when it comes to abdomen pain, but it does help to recognize the symptoms of abdominal pain that is serious and may need immediate medical attention. Becoming familiar with the different types of pain in the abdominal area also helps a person to have a better idea of what the pain may be caused by and the best way to treat it.

This article has been made to cover some of the more common questions about the causes of abdominal pain and the best ways to treat the symptoms.

What is abdominal pain?
Abdominal pain is a common occurrence for people of all ages and has a wide variety of causes. It is characteristically a sharp pain in the abdomen or stomach area. The pain can occur in particular spots, such as the right side or left side only, or it can be an all over pain. The location of the pain, if it is localized, can help to narrow down the cause of your discomfort.

What can cause abdominal pain?
The most common reason for abdominal pain is simple indigestion. If you experience bloating as a symptom, then your pain is likely a case of gas. Abdominal pain that is localized on your left or right side can indicate organ problems, specifically the liver and gallbladder. If this pain is persistent and lasts for more than a day or so, you should seek medical attention. If you experience abdominal pain with constipation or diarrhea and bloating for a long period of time, you could have what is known as IBS or Irritable Bowel Syndrome. Another common cause of abdominal pain for women is cramping associated with their menstrual cycle.

What are some over the counter remedies for abdominal pain?
Luckily, there are many over the counter drugs for your various abdominal pain symptoms. If it is a gas or bloating issue, many antacids will provide some relief. A laxative can help to cure symptoms of constipation related to abdominal pain. Acetaminophen and Ibuprofen will relieve abdominal pain due to muscle cramping. Please be aware that if you experience this pain for a long period of time, especially if it comes with a fever, you should seek medical attention.

What are some home remedies for abdominal pain?
Home remedies are a natural way to relieve symptoms that you may be experiencing. Applying heat to the area has been known to greatly reduce the pain you might feel from abdominal cramping. Peppermint tea has been known to cure many types of stomach upset that can cause stomach discomforts and indigestion, as well.

Abdominal pain can cause great discomfort, but once you are able to determine what all of your symptoms are, there are many effective ways to cure it or relieve the pain.

What are some common causes of abdominal pain?

Answer: Abdominal pain is one of the most common types of pain. Most everyone experiences abdominal pain at some point in their lifetime. This pain seems to afflict women more often than men.

Abdominal pain is usually caused by inflammation. Some good examples of this would include appendicitis, diverticulitis, and colitis. Appendicitis is inflammation of the appendix, and is usually caused by blockage. Diverticuli are bulging sacks located inside the colon, and diverticulitis is a condition caused by the rupture of these sacks. Colitis is a condition that occurs when the lining of the colon becomes inflamed.

Some other causes of abdominal pain are when organs become extended or stretched, usually from a blockage. Gallstones, for instance are caused by a blockage of bile ducts in the liver. Another example is hepatitis, which causes a swelling of the liver. Both of these conditions are quite common and cause extreme abdominal pain.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome, often referred to as IBS, afflicts 15% of the people in the United States, but is very hard to diagnose. The abdominal pain associated with this condition can be chronic and debilitating. The syndrome occurs when muscles in the organs in the gastrointestinal track are not functioning normally. To transport body gasses properly, these muscles must be performing properly. There is a lot of disagreement on the exact cause an effect of Irritable Bowel Syndrome, with many questions being as yet unanswered.

Women often experience abdominal pain in the days leading up to their menstrual cycle. This pain seems to vary from woman to woman, but 90% of all women report having it to one degree or another. For some women it is very slight, but for others, the pain is so severe that it interferes with their day to day lives. Menstrual cramping in the abdominal area is caused by a condition called dysmenorrheal. Dysmenorrheal is usually caused by the shedding of the inner lining of the uterus.

If you suffer from any of the symptoms given above, you should consult your doctor. There are many prescription drugs and over the counter medications that have shown to greatly reduce the discomfort and frequency of abdominal pain.

Appendix is a finger-like tissue attached to the beginning of the large intestine. It is located at the lower right side of the abdomen where the large intestine and the small intestine meet. When it becomes inflamed, the condition is called appendicitis. It can be very painful and unbearable. The pain basically indicates that inflammation has taken place and immediate medical help is needed.

Causes:

Appendix is a sac-like structure. When it gets infected, inflammation occurs and the sac fills up with pus. The immune system also reacts and you experience pain in the lower right abdomen. Moreover, the pain can get worse if the appendix ruptures. Back pain can also be experienced by appendix patients.

Symptoms:

Nausea, vomiting, slight fever, reduced appetite, swollen abdomen and frequent urination are some symptoms linked with appendix pain. Regular diarrhea can also indicate this problem. Young kids mostly show signs like bloated abdomen and vomiting. Another sign can be the effect of pressure applied on the area. The pain gets worse when pressure is applied and it can get even more troublesome after the removal of pressure. If lying in the fetal position relieves the pain, you will know that you have this condition.

Diagnosis:

Once you realize your condition, the next step is to see a doctor. Either you will be given a mild painkiller or your worst fears will be confirmed. The doctor applies pressure to the area to check the intensity of the pain. Blood and urine tests will be carried out along with an X-ray and a CAT scan.

Treatment:

In the beginning, pain can be managed by using homeopathic remedies. The only effective treatment for appendix pain is the removal of the inflamed appendix through surgery. It can be confused with another medical problem because the pain is shared by other conditions as well. For this reason, most doctors wrongly diagnose appendicitis in many cases and a healthy part of your body is removed for no reason. Painkillers might help for a temporarily but pain in the lower abdomen must never be ignored for long. The appendix can rupture and even lead to death.

End Note

Appendix is not a vital part of the body. People can even function without it. No changes are required in diet after a person has had it surgically removed. It is only a myth that physical exercise is needed to stay fit after this surgery.

Belly pain or abdominal pain is very common among children as well as adults. It can be very painful and is caused by a number of factors. Once you know the causes and their symptoms, it becomes easier to treat the condition.

Causes:

Ruptured blood vessels, heart attack, liver inflammation, pregnancy, ulcers and gallbladder disease are only some of the causes of belly pain. Food poisoning, rashes, pneumonia and pelvis diseases are also common causes. Such pain in the abdomen may also be felt intermittently.

Symptoms:

Changes in menstrual cycle and excessive bleeding, fertility symptoms, sexual pain in pregnancy and ovarian tumor are symptoms related to female abdominal discomfort. Watery stool, weight gain, sores, rectal ulceration, pus, leg ulcers, osteoporosis, photosensitivity and rashes are some of the many symptoms observed in patients. Anorexia, arthritic signs, anal inflammation and acute prostate symptoms are also common symptoms of the condition.

Characteristics:

Physicians focus upon characteristics such as location of the pain, duration, starting point, general pattern in which the pain progresses and also the factors that trigger the pain or allow it to subside. These characteristics help in the diagnosis and treatment of the pain.

Diagnosis:

Tests and technological processes can help diagnose belly pain effectively. However, it is not always easy to do so. Some symptoms can be related to other diseases. CT scans, ultrasounds and blood tests like CBC can miss certain abnormalities like appendicitis, gall stones, stomach perforation and pancreatic cancer. Another problem is the location of the pain. You might be experiencing pain in a body part other than your stomach. This might confuse you and the doctor if you are not able to link it with the abdominal problem.

Natural Remedies:

· Have clear fluids in small amounts.

· Consume food in small amounts 6 hours after vomiting.

· Pain in the upper abdomen can be solved by antacids. Take this step only if you are a patient of heart burn as well.

· Avoid fatty or greasy foods.

· Stay away from medicines that can inflame the inner lining of your stomach.

Consult Your Physician

If the pain does not subside for more than a week, if you pass blood in your stool, have a burning sensation when urinating or simply lose weight constantly for no reason, you need to consult your physician. He will observe your medical history and any symptoms that might indicate the condition.

What causes colon pain? Colon pain can be caused by a wide variety of illnesses, ailments or disease’s. One of the most common causes of colon pain is a stomach virus. Many types of stomach viruses can cause diarrhea which will in turn cause pain or cramping in the area of the colon. This usually only lasts for as long as the duration of the flu virus and will discontinue when the virus has run its course.

I have colon pain quite often, why? Colon pain can also be caused by a disease called Crohn’s Disease. This is an inflammatory bowel disease. There is no known cause or cure for Crohn’s Disease. Crohn’s Disease is becoming more prevalent and many new cases are diagnosed each year all over the world. Because Crohn’s Disease may start out as only colon pain it may be overlooked by doctors or misdiagnosed as a common stomach virus. If the colon pain continues for more then a few days, the doctor may suggest having tests done such as a colonoscopy or upper GI series to rule out Crohn’s Disease.

Why did I get colon pain after I ate? Colon pain can also be caused by ingesting foods that are not cooked thoroughly or that contain bacteria. E-Coli is a common food born illness that causes mild to severe colon pain. Cooking food to the recommended temperature can keep individuals from contracting illnesses such as food poisoning. Washing raw fruits and vegetables can also help prevent cases of food poisoning which causes colon pain.

Why do I have almost constant colon pain? The most serious cause of colon pain would be that the colon has cancerous cells growing in it. The symptoms for colon cancer can be wide and may vary with each individual, but most complain of pain in their colon. Colon cancer is very treatable if caught early enough.

Will constipation cause colon pain? Colon pain can also be caused by constipation. When the bowels become impacted it can be very painful. Individuals suffering from this type of colon pain should seek a physician’s opinion on the best way to treat it. Colon pain that is caused by constipation can often times be remedied by changing dietary habits or adding an extra bit of exercise to the daily routine. Walking is often a good treatment for colon pain that is caused by constipation.

There are many remedies and medications that can relieve constipation and the pain that comes with it. Simple activities or diets can be really useful, but are neglected because of the obvious hassles of society. People in this modern age have a lot to worry about in order to make a living and take care of responsibilities. This can cause stress and anxiety which slows down the digestive system making the problem worse. Exercise is something people commonly do not get enough of to relieve this anxiety and ironically enough is a key component in relieving constipation. Along with being crunched for time, it is more likely to stop at a fast food restaurant where the food has a lack of the necessary nutrients, particularly fiber. Fiber is the key mineral in keeping a healthy digestive system with regular bowel movements. It is in food and certain beverages, but that may not be enough for a certain individual. Vitamin supplements are a good way to increase fiber intake. They also have powder drink mixes that dissolves and adds flavor to water. The water is important as well because staying properly hydrated is another factor that may sometimes be overlooked or unthought of. So besides the high fiber diets, exercise, hydration and stress relief, there is another route that is more chemical. On the lower scale of that is caffiene, which is commonly found in tea and coffee. This is a great medium in treatment for mild constipation and staying on the safe side, but may affect mood, sleep, and behavior making it an addictive substance. Above and more effective then that is laxitives. To these other options it is quick relief, but in the long run are unreliable and have side effects. Constipation can be caused by a lack of many things, but also may be due to too much of something. Narcotics such as pain killers and certain anti depressants such as SSRI’s and SNRI’s have this effect, and can vary from person to person. Medications are hard to predict and dictate so it should be the last resort. Constipation is agitating and uncomfortable. However, it is easily treatable with a plan and routine that is customized by the sufferer and as with anything, patience is a virtue.

Is it something serious or is it just a gas pain?

Gas pains can feel so severe that you may think there is something seriously wrong with your stomach; however, it just ends up being gas in your digestive tract. Although a lot of the time pains in your stomach can turn out to be gas, if you ever feel severe abdominal pain it is always wise to call your doctor as it could be something serious. Gas in the digestive tract is caused by swallowing air, by the breakdown of undigested foods, and by certain foods that produce gas. Everyone swallows a small amount of air when eating, drinking, and even smoking. Burping is the way most of the swallowed air gets released from our stomachs. The air that leaves the stomach when we belch contains oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon dioxide; this is due to the natural acids and enzymes that are in our stomach, which break down the food we eat. When we eat food, our bodies do not absorb and digest some sugar carbohydrates, fiber, and starches found in a lot of foods we eat; the small intestine lacks some enzymes that aid digestion, this undigested food passes through the small intestine into the large intestine, which is where natural bacteria in our stomachs breaks down the food. The process of breaking this food down produces carbon dioxide, and hydrogen. These gases build up and eventually exit the body through the rectum. About 1/3 of people also produce methane in these gases, which doesn’t mean they pass gas more, however, their stools will float in water. \
Certain foods that produce gas for one person may not produce gas for another; such as someone being lactose intolerant, where gas if produced from drinking milk or eating dairy products. There are some foods that produce gas for the majority of people however, such as broccoli and brussel sprouts; many foods that contain carbohydrates can be the cause gas as well. Some sugars that cause gas inclue lactose, raffinose, sorbitol, and fructose; raffinose sugar is in beans and small amounts are in brussel sprouts, cabbage, asparagus, broccoli, whole grains, and some other vegetables. Lactose is the natural sugar that is found in milk, ice cream, chest, and foods that are processed like cereal, bread, and salad dressings. Fructose is a natural sugar that is in artichokes, onions, pears, and wheat. Sorbitol is a sugar found in fruits like peaches, pears, prunes, and apples. The starches that cause gas include potatoes, pasta, corn, and wheat; however, rice does not cause gas in the stomach. Fiber foods are foods that contain soluble and insoluble fiber; foods with soluble fiber are the foods that cause gas, soluble fiber is found in beans, oat bran, most fruits, and peas. Soluble fiber does not get broken down until it has reached the large intestine where digestion will cause gas. If you feel severe pains in your stomach and are not sure if it is gas or something more serious, it is smart to be safe and visit your doctor, who can prescribe something to you for gas or tell you what to take if it is just severe gas pains.

Lower Abdominal pain is a common complaint among many men and women. There are numerous causes of lower abdomen pain and many of them depend on whether you are a man or a woman. If any pain lasts longer than 2 weeks it should be something that you discuss with your doctor. Often times the cause is not serious and can be treated easily. However, there are cases in which lower abdominal pain can be caused by a more serious condition that will need further treatment. Many times there is no cause found for abdominal pain and it can be difficult to diagnose.

Some of the more common causes of lower abdominal pain in women include: irritable bowel syndrome, ovulation, ovarian cysts, endometriosis, pelvic inflammatory disease, uterine fibroids, bladder infections, kidney problems, or various infections of the reproductive organs. In some cases pain can be caused by certain cancers such as cancer of the ovaries or uterus. Furthermore, lower abdominal pain can be caused by appendicitis, gallstones or colon problems. A doctor will perform an ultrasound and or CT scan to determine if any of these conditions are the cause of your abdominal pain.

For men, the reasons for lower abdominal pain are a little different. Men cannot experience pain from ovarian or uterine problems. However, men may also experience Irritable Bowel Syndrome or colon problems that can cause pain. Pain in men can be more difficult to diagnose if it is not combined with other symptoms. However, pain can be caused by appendicitis, kidney stones, bladder inflammation or Seminal Vesculitis. In addition, colon problems or cancer can cause lower abdomen discomfort. Men also need to seek medical advice if a problem persists for longer than 2 weeks.

Lower abdominal pain can be caused by many different factors and can be difficult to diagnose. Some causes may be easily treatable, while others require more aggressive care. It is crucial to obtain medical advice if you are experiencing long lasting pain that is interfering with your life. There are many tests that can be conducted to diagnose your problem including: blood work, scans, and ultrasounds. Early diagnosis will help in curing abdominal pain.

I often get sudden pains in my lower abdomen in between my menstrual cycles. The pain only lasts a few hours, but it’s usually enough for me to need to an over the counter pain medication. Is this something I should be worried about?

If you have seen a medical professional and had other abdominal abnormality’s ruled out then this pain could be a simple case of ovulation pain. The pain is not harmful and usually requires no medical treatment, but an over the counter pain reliever like you had mentioned can ease the pain.

Mid cycle pain in your lower abdomen or pelvis can be quite normal for many women. This pain called Mittelschmerz or middle pain, which is caused by ovulation. This pain is experienced by only about 20% of women, but it may not occur every cycle. Middle pain can start suddenly and last anywhere between a few hours to 2-3 days. This pain can present on just one side and switch each cycle depending on which ovary is releasing the egg.

It is thought that middle pain may be caused by a variety of reasons. One is follicular swelling. The follicle or egg is stored in your ovaries prior to ovulation. Only one or two eggs will mature enough to be released, but during this phase of maturation many follicles could grow causing pressure on the ovary’s. This may be the reason for ovulation pain to be present on both sides.

Another theory is that since ovaries have no opening, the mature egg must break through and rupture the ovarian wall. It is also known that after the release of an egg the fallopian tubes contract which may be caused for ovulation pain to be prolonged. Irritation is thought to cause pain in some cases. Once ovulation occurs blood or other fluid can be introduced to the abdominal lining causing pain.

This ovulation pain can be useful to women who are string to conceive. Often used as a secondary sign while charting ovulation. A rise in your basal temperature and the presence of fertile egg white like mucus can confirm the source of the pain.
